Using a laptop connected to the internet via Wi-Fi can potentially damage sperm, a study suggests.
Sperm samples placed beneath a laptop with a wireless internet connection for just four hours were found to have reduced motility and more DNA damage compared with other samples stored under the same conditions but away from the laptop.
The study, published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, collected sperm samples from 29 healthy men, aged 26 to 45. Each of the samples were then separated into two pots.
One set of samples was placed beneath a laptop connected to the internet via Wi-Fi as it downloaded information, while the other set was stored under identical conditions - including temperature - but away from the computer.
The researchers found that exposure to the laptop resulted in a significant decrease in sperm motility and a significant increase in DNA fragmentation.
Around 25 per cent of the sperm in samples exposed to the laptop stopped swimming compared with 14 per cent of those kept away from the computer.
Similarly around nine per cent of the sperm exposed to the laptop showed DNA damage compared with three per cent in the control samples.
The researchers, from Eastern Virginia Medical School and the Nascentis Centre for Reproductive Medicine in Cordoba, Argentina, suggest that the electromagnetic radiation, and not heat, given out by the laptop was the cause.
In the study, the laptop connected to Wi-FI emitted 7 - 15 times more electromagnetic radiation than background levels, they said.
"Our data suggest that the use of a laptop computer wirelessly connected to the internet and positioned near the male reproductive organs may decrease human sperm quality, they wrote.
"At present we do not know whether this effect is induced by all laptop computers connected by Wi-Fi to the internet or what conditions heighten this effect."
The scientists concluded: "The mechanisms mediating the decrease in sperm motility and DNA integrity also need further study."

A father has been accused of killing his three-year-old son by locking him in a washing machine and starting a cold wash cycle in France.
Christophe Chempenois, 33, inflicted the "punishment" on the toddler for misbehaving at his nursery school, police said.
The child named Bastien had thrown a drawing by a classmate down a toilet earlier that day.
On Friday evening, Champenois allegedly forced the child naked into the washing machine and let it run for "several minutes", reports said.
Neighbour Alice told the French capital's newspaper Le Parisien the toddler's mother Charlene, 25, had rushed to her door carrying his body after the incident, claiming he had fallen down some stairs.
"I took him in my arms like a broken doll," Alice told the newspaper.
"I felt the last beat of his heart. Charlene didn't move. She was red all over. She didn't understand he was dead."
Bastien is said to have died within minutes of being taken out of the family's home, near the Paris suburb of Meaux.
A local police spokesman said: "A 33-year-old man has been arrested for murder of a minor.
"The man's wife has also been arrested for non-assistance of a person in danger.
"This man... will be held in custody until a date for his trial can be set."

A woman has been charged after a video apparently showing a passenger abusing ethnic minority people on a south London tram was posted online.

The clip, viewed more than two million times since being uploaded to YouTube on Sunday, shows a woman sitting with a child, shouting at fellow passengers.

The incident happened on the Croydon-to-Wimbledon Tramlink route.

Emma West, 34, of New Addington, Croydon, is accused of a racially-aggravated public order offence.

ARREST OF ALI SANDA UMAR KONDUGA (A.K.A. USMAN AL-ZAWAHIRI),  The spokesman of the boko haram sect on the  3rd November, 2011 about 2030 hours at Gwange area, Maiduguri, Borno State, a joint security operation led to the arrest of Ali Sanda Umar KONDUGA, acclaimed spokesman of the Boko Haram sect, widely known in the media as Usman AL-ZAWAHIRI. He was a former political thug operating under a group widely known as ECOMOG.

5. That one of his benefactor’s promised to pay him Ten Million Naira (N10 million) to work for his party but by stint of fate, he died on his way to deliver the part payment of Five Million Naira (N5 Million) to AL-ZAWAHIRI;

6. That consequent upon this, subject claimed a serving member of the National Assembly took over the running of his activities;

7. That he was behind the threat text messages sent to the Judges of the Election Petition Tribunal in Maiduguri. His objective was to ensure that the Tribunal sacks the present Government in Borno State;

8. That he was also behind other threats messages sent to Governor Sule LAMIDO, Governor Babangida ALIYU, Amb. Dalhatu Sarki TAFIDA, Chief Olusegun OBASANJO and Justice Sabo ADAMU (Chairman of the Election Petition Tribunal in Borno State).
 
9. That most of the threat messages he sent to Justice Sabo ADAMU, were scripted and relayed to him by the National Assembly member.

10. That the threat text messages eventually led to the relocation of the election petition tribunal from Maiduguri to Abuja;

11. That the same legislator promised to send him some telephone numbers of members of the GALTIMARI Committee on Security in the North East, before he (AL-ZAWAHIRI) was apprehended.

12. That the telephone number and content of the text message sent to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice were also given to him by the Legislator in order to compel him (AGF) to influence the judgment of the tribunal against the Government in Borno State.

Meanwhile, analysis of AL-ZAWAHIRI’s phone has confirmed constant communication between him and the legislator.

The tracker system is designed to track all the activities of the Lord Resistance Army in Uganda. The Crisis Tracker app aggregates and publishes visualized data about deaths, abductions, injuries, displacements, LRA sightings, lootings and returnees on the map, by culling reports from high-frequency radios in Africa. Reports are transmitted to the capital, transcribed and entered into a cloud computing enterprise Salesforce database.  Digitaria built a Drupal program to pull information from the Salesforce database, populate it in the interactive map and attach media to each incident.

Based in Northern Uganda and Sudan, the Lord's Resistance Army seeks to destabilize and overthrow the government of Uganda. Formed in 1992 in an attempt to unify a resistance movement fractured by the marginalization of the Uganda Democratic Christian Army, the group promotes a radical form of Christianity which it wants to make the foundation of a new Ugandan government. The group, led by Joseph Kony, has sought to achieve these objectives primarily through unbridled brutality. Rape, torture, and murder have become the group's hallmarks in the almost fifteen years that they have terrorized the citizens of Northern Uganda. The ranks of the LRA are filled in large part (approximately 80%) by children, who are kidnapped and brainwashed into service with the group. Human rights NGOs place the number of children currently fighting with LRA at around 3,000. LRA members also kidnap children, particularly girls, to serve as sex slaves; some have even been given as "gifts" to arms dealers in Sudan.

LRA attacks have been notable for both their brutality and their pointlessness. Two popular nightspots have been bombed, a bus full of people was attacked by club-wielding LRA soldiers who caused 22 fatalities, and an Italian priest was murdered. Other victims include World Food Program volunteers, the former President of Uganda, and mourners at a funeral, who were forced to cook and eat the body of the deceased. No discernible political program underlies these attacks aside from Kony's desire to cause extreme pain and suffering to all Acholi tribes that do not support the LRA.

A group that calls itself ‘WikiLeaks Libya’ has released to the public scores of documents supposedly found in deposed Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi’s former government offices. Among those documents is a letter from a group of Americans offering to help Gaddafi defeat the rebels and remain in power, all for an initial fee of $10 million.

“The fees and payments set forth in this contract are MINIMUM NON-REFUNDABLE FEES,” the drafted contract read. “The fees are an inducement for the ATTORNEYS AND ADVISORS to take the case and nothing else.”

The New York Times reports that Neil C. Livingstone, 65, the terrorism consultant who helped put together the deal, said the goal was not to keep Gaddafi in power but create a way out for the dictator and his family. Livingstone is also a television commentator and previously attempted to run for governor in Montana.

In the contract, the American consultants promised Gaddafi they could help him better comply with U.N. resolutions, get access to billions of dollars in blocked Libyan assets, and ultimately find sanctuary in an Arabic-speaking country. The consultants, however, never got a required Treasury Department license to accept payment from Gaddafi before he was captured and killed Oct. 20.

The leaked documents also show another partner in the deal, a Belgian named Dirk Borgers, had offered lobbying services to Gaddafi to try to gain U.S. government support.

“Our group of Libyan sympathizers is extremely worried about this and we would like to help to block the actions of your international enemies and to support a normal working relationship with the United States Government,” the letter said. “Therefore it is absolutely required to speak officially and with one strong voice with the American Government.”

Livingstone said he had never seen the letter, which was signed by Borgers but included his name, and that lobbying for U.S. support was never his intention.

“Let’s not argue about semantics,” Borgers told the Times. “I don’t think [Gaddafi] was that brutal a dictator,”

In September, correspondence between Libyan intelligence and the C.I.A. was made public that included discussion of handing over terrorist suspects to Libya.

Members of the Boko Haram sect that  has been carrying out bombing raids in the north yesterday reiterated that all their members who have been arrested must be released before  they accept to take part in any dialogue.

The group also revealed the identity of the two suicide bombers that attacked the Joint Task Force headquarters (JTF) in Maiduguri and the Anti Terrorism two- storey building in Damaturu, Yobe State on November 4. Over 150 people including security men were killed in the two attacks.

Spokesman of the group Abul Qaqa who spoke to Daily Trust on phone called on President Goodluck Jonathan, Senate President David Mark, Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Tambuwal and the Attorney General  and Minister of Justice Mohammed Bello Adoke to expedite action on the release of all members of the sect.

“The recipe for peace is the unconditional release of our members. Let me repeat what I said: All our members must be released before any attempt at going into negotiations. All the top men in the country are sleeping in the comfort of their rooms and singing the songs of dialogue when our members are being persecuted. This is unacceptable,” Qaqa said.

He gave the identity of the man that bombed the anti terrorism building in Damaturu as Mohammed Usman alias Baana. “We see him as an exceptional martyr because he was barely four days in our group when he pleaded that we should allow him to carry out the act,” Qaqa said.

“He used a Honda CRV jeep and that was the very day that he learned how to drive. He was a successful businessman and left behind a wife and a son,” Qaqa said.

Qaqa said 26-year-old Abi Yusuf was responsible for the bombing of the JTF headquarters in Maiduguri. “He was also a martyr whom we are going to miss a lot because of his outstanding mastery of how to improvise explosives,” Qaqa said.
