Nigeria is a beautiful place and I was honored to visit last year. The article is telling the truth about the U.S. ranking low in education. Especially for Black children due to funding not available and bad teachers.

The "Afro-American" story is really a painful one sister.
It`s gradually becoming a tradition. Finance is one of the reasons like you rightfully said but at the bottom.
I see lack of interest and early pursuit for money.

It baffles me when I see them on the streets in their numbers; young, beautiful  & handsome but with no education in a country where it`s still possible to gain scholarship not just from the govt. but also from so many non-governmental organizations.
A county, where one is entitled to education loan from the govt.
It`s sad

Dude, you`re not completely wrong talking about the decadence in our educational system, but watch what you say bearing in mind you`re talking about a state (country) with over 200M. people with millions of its graduates occupying competitive & challenging positions in all corner of the earth (including the US, UK and the rest of Europe) and not your family or your friend`s circle.

I think he is right about graduates who cannot spell their names. Make a visit to the university of maiduguri and make some enquiry on that. If I can remember properly, I think the graduate who cannot spell his name is a graduate of LAW.

If I must respond mate,
that ONE (1) trained mechanic in a village in Anambra State could not fix a car does not mean that Mechanics in Nigeria cannot fix cars.
There are more cases over there than those few cases on your mind that happened here.

Whichever way you may see it, comments from people like you have caused more than 30% of Nigerias problem and only people living abroad and those who travel often will tell you how much they suffer just because of untrue, over emphasized and extremely exaggerated stories and arguments you and I post on the net.

Yes that is the fact, the life of living Nigerian is lifeless because our leaders does not reserve any First aid to our life. In Education, we are very poor in Acedemic calender and Nigeria is a country when the dullest person can graduate with first class and upper when he or her can't even spell him surname or define the deparetment him graduated from. Nigeria is an insecurity country when the government can't track kinapper phones to get them where ever they are making the call from e.g Netherlands. Nigeria is also a place where the Government will give a room for arms rubbers to operate as much as hours they like to operate on. For working, there is no job and factories created by the Nigeria Govern't since the Nigeria got independent. Nigerians that grduating from higher schools nowadays only have jobless opportunities. The way Northerns kill people is not more then sucide. We pray that God to touch one Nigeria that will make nigeria to be better country as the colours flag of Nigeria.

Being patriotic, sensitive, concerned and having the zeal is not enough.
Criticism and propaganda are good tools but still not all.
Being open, vocal and free minded are welcomed; no doubt.
BUT we NEED to apply wisdom to protect our country like others do.
And like I mentioned earlier, what is here is equally there and in some cases: worse. But they have got the right political attitude of protecting their country thereby protecting their citizens even in the fight for the better.

Things are not right here, no, not at all. However, I`v been opportuned to tour many countries around the world and have personal contact with the people. I`m equally a wild reader of histories, education- and political articles & general current affairs.
My finding being that Nigeria, no matter what standard and consideration will never emerge 50th out of 100 countries.

The negative reports on Nigeria, which are not completely wrong but highly exaggerated and horrifyingly painted for the purpose of political entertainment and media attraction are often based not on facts and practices but on our (Nigerians) own words of condemnation, rejection, (true but) exaggerated stories we share on the net and EASY ACCEPTANCE OF THE VIEWS AND STANDPOINTS OF THE OUTSIDE WORLD which we rebrand in a more intensified & heinous way and sell back to the international community.

If an American should say that we`re all (Nigerians) idiots, we`ll not allow him to finish before we`ll reply "we`re not just idiots but animals" and so you`ll be judged by your own words in any matter relating to you being an idiot & no more what the American said.
(just a simplified example)

THIS RANKING IS WITHOUT BASE.

ALL THESE COUNTRIES ARE NOT
BETTER THAN NAIJA.

NAIJA4LIFE.

The research report has a solid base but it`s far and I mean very far from revealing the truth.

Poverty, insecurity, corruption, (and sorry to say religion)...have eaten deep into the blood stream of the Nigeria state but not unlike in every other country especially in Africa, Asia & South-America. The method/system and gravity might differ. It`s acceptance & rejection are highly as well as less controlled depending on the given country. But in some countries like Nigeria, control is out of the question.

And like they say, " a golden fish has no hiding place". Nigeria, being what it is, is too big not to be seen and Nigerians, being who they are, are too open, uncared & vocal in selling their country almost always in a very terrifying & horrible negative manner.

>>>People will call your dog by the name you give to it<<<

When a fictional or exaggerated story survives generations, it becomes a widely-true-acceptable tradition associated to a set of people and every other testimony involving the people, which is to be believed, revolves round it.

You know, when we discuss underdevelopment, religious violence, tribalism/racism  and other  "Nigerian factors", everyone turns to governments. But the fact is that even if we have the best people in power, who `re dedicated, determined, selfless & ready to deliver, the mindset/mentality of average Nigerians (men & women alike) will still locate us and throw us back to the gutters.

We dream to have beautiful environment, strong economic force, the best educational system & atmosphere, democratic govts., security, uninterrupted power supply, good transportation system & road network, a functional legal system... just like Europe & America (& even Asia & South-America) but those are almost unachievable because the success is greatly based on the mentality of the majority.

Except we develop our minds, our environment will never be developed!
And except we accept "the change", the Nigerian Dream will remain unrealizable!!!

No one enjoys being beaten or dehumanization of any kind, but yes some are used to it because of the lifestyle they`re meant to live or (and) they chose to live.
We might deny it and reject it outrightly but the truth remains that many girls in our lawless society are being maltreated; being beaten emotionally & physically by their men, be it boyfriend, fiance or husband.

If you`re a lady, just pray you don`t end up with one of those monsters out there in the name of men and behave yourself however to avoid the temptation of being beaten.
We sometimes put up unbearable characters that change our men to monsters, force & throw them far beyond their control, which make them act strangely.

Irrespective of a lady`s attitude, any man who beats or dehumanizes a woman is a mindless savage, a coward, a beast that deserves not to live among men but with animals,
a mutant centaur that deserves not see the nakedness of a woman.

Not all that fling manhood around are men!
Not all ladies are women!

Can someone tell me at what age marriage could be termed "late"?.
I wouldn`t know why everyone seems to agree with this argument. I see it quit differently.

Well the truth is this... Marriage has nothing to do with AGE, But if you get into a marriage with the intentions of having Kids(DuuuH!!), that's when the Age thing comes in.

An unofficial research report shows that over 35% Nigerian ladies graduate from tertiary institutions married, while about 41% graduate with engagement rings on their fingers. About 5% of the later breaks up after graduation.
That means that over 70% of our ladies marry before or shortly after graduation and doesn`t necessarily mean that the rest (less than 30%) remains unmarried until old age.

I do not see your point here as this research report could be accurate, it doesn't give the ages of these so called married/engaged women. There are alot of women in their 30's that are still university students whether engaged or not. And mind you, being engaged doesn't mean you are married. So, with that being said, the report and your argument is disparative to the post.

I however agree that there`re ladies, who marry or would want to marry at late 30s & early 40s but they`r a very insignificant minority in Nigeria.

On the other hand, education opens a new version of wisdom and knowledge and therefore introduces a new lifestyle as a result of a new life perspective, behavioral change that matches the new life, and completely different sets of ideologies (the speedy reduction of family sizes among the middle class is evidential;one, two or three children as against 11, 12,13...).

The new lifestyle contradicts the traditional African cultural practices.
Women now understand themselves as "whole", (full human) with rights & respect, independent entities and no more mere kitchen servants & child production machines that answers --yes Sir-- to every erection without love making.

Again, as much I agree with you on this, I still think that your point is very weak. Education opening a new version of wisdom and knowledge has no correlation to marriage. I'm not exactly sure how not being married is wisdom and/or knowledge. If you are a Christian, you will know that the only reason a man or woman may choose to be unmarried is if they decide to serve God the rest of their lives(being a Rev. Father/Sister or something similar). The same new lifestyle you speak of teaches our young girls that staying and working out your marriage problems with your spouse is never a way to handle a shaky marriage. Now the only way is to get a divorce.

Again, bearing in mind that there`re more educated women than men in the present day Nigeria, most women find it very difficult to adjust back to the world of uneducated men in marriage due to the shortage of educated men, after haven been introduced to a completely new world.
The fear of misunderstanding of ideas, unnecessary arguments,  wrong interpretation of lifestyle, wrong & irresponsible presentation of oneself in the public, unlit future full of ordinarily avoidable uncertainties that might not be avoided due to ignorant partner etc., force some women to chose satisfying themselves & utilizing their freedom before venturing into such marriages.

Education and Marriage has nothing in common. Marriage entered into by two non-educated (university) couples last longer than that of the so-called one Educated, one non educated couple especially if the woman is the educated one. Permit me if I say that Education(School) doesn't necessarily mean Wisdom. One could be an Educated Dummie you know. And you'll be surprised that there are alot of UnEducated wizards.

Ascribing it to the hope of abroad based Nigerian guys is a misunderstanding that emanates out of ignorance attached to the believe "I know" due to a few cases of such.
And even if that could be true, then the guys must have known the lifestyle the ladies seek for and not just for the sake of being abroad or being financially buoyant.

Permit me to ask: must a lady marry? must she marry early? must she even marry a Nigerian based...?
A change of attitude on the side of our beloved, honored, most cherished & celebrated Nigerian men `ll go a long way to correcting this "minority lifestyle" if that must be.

Yes a lady must marry unless she has dedicated her life completely to serving God.Sorry it was my law. This is Biblical. The question of marrying earlier depends on if she really wants to bear children, but again it's hard to find a man that doesn't want children even if the lady do not want any kids. So that would be called SELFISH. A Nigerian woman doesn't have to marry a Nigerian based, but when the intentions are just to travel abroad and then leave your husband wifeless that is totally unacceptable and I would fight with everything I have to get that bitch deported back to Nigeria.

It`s pretty cool and interesting reading your sincere opinion & believe of what life is or should be in marriage and I really commend that because I see it as a rooted challenge.

Haven gone through all your responses to different comments on this topic, I see a sincere submission of a set of rigid ideologies based on religious believe & traditional African practices; thank God I`m a core African girl & I believe in God as well. I know what you represent & I`v got people like you all around me, and so, I understand your view.
And like they say: "in all matters of opinion, our adversaries are insane" and where an opinion is general, it is usually "correct".

Based on the rigidity of your view, I wouldn`t argue further but just point out a few facts.

You see part of my submission as being weak, & some like you said lack point & as such do not cohere to the topic. This is because you refused to understand my words in the context of my view which you`v already rejected.
You are of the opinion that academic qualification has got nothing to do with marriage. I wonder if anybody else would want me to react to that.

That aside, we live in a world, where figures are easily manipulated and abused which was why I tried being careful and thus "unauthorized"
But if we must work with figures, allow me give you a short clue.
According to the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, the average graduation age of Nigerian female students lies at 24 (between 1960 & 2008).
The same source, in response to the fight against premature marriage, unwanted pregnancies, forced marriage, female child labour in form of marriage and the widely circulated rumour that female Nigerians graduate late & as a result remain perpetual spinsters says, that 91% of female Nigerian graduates marry in their twenties while only 5% & 2% marry in their early/mid and late thirties respectively.

When we talk about graduates here, we refer to First Degree/HND/NCE holders and their like. When you do your research well, you `ll find out however that most female who marry late are those that pursue higher qualifications(PGD, masters, PHD...) and most marry before or shortly after graduation before their continued pursuit of higher knowledge.

Responding to one of your responses: whether you like/accept it or not, carrier pursuit denies a woman part of her societal traditionally recognized responsibilities either regularly or at interval.

http://www.saharareporters.com/news-page/ribadu-declare-his-intention-run-president

Saharareporters has learned that former chair of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Nuhu Ribadu is on the cusp of declaring his intention to run for the office of the Nigerian presidency.

“The announcement of Nuhu’s candidacy will come any moment from now,” an authoritative source knowledgeable about the political development told Saharareporters exclusively.

Ribadu returned to Nigeria recently and took part in a high profile seminar organized by the National Association of Seadogs also known as Pyrates Fraternity.

Several sources told our correspondents that the former EFCC boss had been quietly holding meetings and consultations with politicians and political interests in different parts of the country.

“Ribadu has met with different groups in Kano, Kaduna, Lagos and Port Harcourt,” said one source, adding, “he has received great encouragement to run.” ...

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

WOULD YOU VOTE HIM?
