81  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Lent: Your prayers will help us make this nation a better place on: 15-02-2013 08:44 PM
President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed his gratitude to Nigerians as they continue to pray for the nation.

President Jonathan was speaking at the Basilica of Grace, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Apo Abuja, at the beginning of Lent, the 40-day fasting and prayer by Christendom. According to the president, “I want to thank all Nigerians for praying steadfastly for the nation. Indeed, your prayers continue to help us in our efforts to make this nation a better place, and I urge you to continue.”

The President, accompanied by his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan and his mother, Madam Eunice Jonathan, said Lent was important because it helped Christians to reflect on their lives and seek God through active sacrifice of fasting and prayers.

The Primate of the Anglican Church, Most Reverend Nicholas Okoh, had earlier said every Christian should take Lent seriously, because of the virtues of humility, sacrifice and love for others which the exercise teaches.

A woman addicted to black market bum-boosting injections has told how she used the dangerous jabs to swell her backside from a size four to a size 10.

Karmello , 23, from Detroit, Michigan, US, says 54 injections over the last three years have filled her búttocks with a whopping two liters of liquid.
But she claims she needs even MORE of the jabs full of unknown chemicals to obtain the “perfect” figure – with another 36 planned. Shockingly, the mum-of-one has never received a single jab form a plastic surgeon and instead meets an unlicensed woman in hotel rooms.
83  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Shocker: 1,300 Kaduna Teachers Fail Primary 4 School Test on: 15-02-2013 08:37 PM
In a rather shocking news, about 1300 teachers in Kaduna have failed in tests generally set for primary four pupils, Commissioner for Education Alhaji Usman Mohammed has revealed.

Mohammed made the shocking disclosure at an education summit tagged “Education for all is responsibility of all”, held at the General Hassan Usman Katsina House yesterday.

“A total of 1,599 teachers selected from across the state were given primary four tests in Mathematics and Basic literacy. Only one of them scored 75 percent, 250 scored between 50 to 75 percent and 1,300 scored below 25 percent,” he said.

According to him, the same examination was conducted for 1,800 primary school pupils but that larger percent of them failed woefully.

“We are not surprised about the performance of the pupils because how can they know it, when their teachers don’t know it,” he added.

In his reaction, chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Kaduna, Comrade  Audu T. Amba said he was not aware of the purported test which the commissioner made reference to.

“I was supposed to be at the summit but I could not make it. I don’t know when, where and how the survey was conducted. Sometime last year, they came out and said 18,000 teachers are unqualified but how many teachers do we have in the state? Who employed the unqualified teachers ? It is the same government that employed them.

“If  selfish interest is not removed in recruitment, we will continue to have the problem. If government is complaining, who do we blame? The government should be blamed for it,” he said in a telephone interview.

84  Forum / Sports / Keshi resigns one day after winning 2013 Afcon title - Goal.com on: 11-02-2013 07:57 PM
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has resigned as boss of the Super Eagles just a day after winning the 2013 African Cup of Nations.

Keshi told Goal.com a few days before the final, that he would "pack his bags and leave" if he felt he was not wanted, but following the 1-0 win against Burkina Faso in the Afcon final, the coach was highly praised from all quarters.

However, after a dramatic falling out with the Nigerian Football Federation, Keshi has tendered his resignation.

His resignation letter still has to be discussed by the NFF, but the coach says he is unlikely to change his mind because he believes that NFF did not trust and respect his tactics as a coach.

86  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / We “Bribe” Police Officers With S*X - Prostitutes on: 4-02-2013 07:34 PM
The popular claim by the police in Nigeria that they are friends of the people has been confirmed by commercial s*x workers at a brothel around the Railway Police Station, Agege area of Lagos state, Southwest Nigeria.

The brothel, which is just a name to cover up the s*x-for-money business that takes place in the old one-storey building, parades pretty women between 25 and 35 years old who said they offer s*x and money to policemen so that they could remain in the world’s oldest profession. The brothel, it was learnt, has been in existence for several years without any disturbance from its neighbouring Railway Police divisional headquarters as well as two churches, one located directly behind it and the other located two houses away from it.

Parading 19 ladies of different sizes and shapes, some of the prostitutes confessed that the rapport between them and policemen force has remained very cordial. “I’ve been doing ashawo (prostitution) business here for over three years now and I can tell you as a customer not to fear because the police will never come here to harass anybody. They know what we do here and also know how we operate. In fact, they are our best friends here,” one of the commercial s*x workers, a Benin girl who refused to mention her name, said.

Another prostitute in the brothel told said that to keep the relationship between the brothel and the police “in good shape”, they cough out N3,000 monthly to bribe law enforcement agents. “Whenever you see the police here, it is either they are here to drink or to collect their “settlement” or even to have a feel of us which we willingly give to them free of charge as we have agreed among ourselves.”

While confirming what her colleagues had said earlier, another commercial s*x worker in the brothel explained that apart from visiting at the end of every month to collect their bribe, the police officers had become more of a shield for them. “Whenever them come here, we dey give them do for free except say them no wan do. We know say na one of the ways to keep the relationship be that. If we no allow them and them come vex, you know say business no go move again be that,” she said in pidgin English. She confirmed that these “friends” of theirs come from the different police stations around them.

“As we are here drinking now, they can come, but they won’t harass anybody. If it is s*x they want, we give, if it is money, we give since the understanding is there,” another s*x worker explained. To keep business running, each of the 19 prostitutes pay a monthly fee of N6,000 as rent for the dingy rooms where patrons sleep with them. They said even though each of them cough out this N6,000 monthly, they make far more than that amount in a week. For them, business begins from 7.30 p.m. when it is getting dark and patrons could hide under the cover of darkness to visit and satisfy their s*xual urge. Starting from this period, each of the ladies “dresses to kill” with very skimpy dresses that barely cover their Bosom s and b*ttocks apparently to attract customers.

“The fee is not fixed and it depends on the impression we have of a customer. We can ask for between N800 and N1,500 for a round of s*x. For guys who don’t release on time, we ask them to add a little extra to whatever they have paid,” one of the prostitutes explained. A police officer at the Pen Cinema Police Station, who preferred to speak anonymously, confirmed that they know that the brothel exists. Denying that his colleagues get bribe to look the other way, he explained that the prostitutes have not done anything to warrant arrest. “They operate in that place like a hotel and they are big girls. Did you see any under-aged prostitute in that place? They also don’t allow small boys in there. So why should we suddenly become overzealous for selfish reasons?” he asked.

91  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Two Women Nabbed Smuggling Cocaine in Homemade Diapers on: 31-01-2013 08:18 PM
Two women from the Bronx have been nabbed smuggling six and a half kilos of cocaine hidden in homemade diapers under their pants.

Priscilla Pena and Michelle Blassingale were returning to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport on a JetBlue flight from the Dominican Republic on Saturday when they were stopped by Customs and Border Protection officers.

A drug-sniffing dog alerted the officers when it came close to Pena, which prompted the officers to conduct a search of her luggage.

It was reported that the officers performed a pat-down and discovered that Pena was wearing what was described as a homemade diaper made out of duct tape “filled with cocaine and rigged like a girdle around their hind quarters.”

The two women were immediately arrested and charged with smuggling. While Blassingale was held in custody in Brooklyn, Pena was released on a $150,000 bail.

93  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Gunmen Invade Birnin Gwari Township In Kaduna State, Bomb Police Station And Ba on: 31-01-2013 04:47 PM
SaharaReporters has just received information from students living in Birnin Gwari town in Kaduna State to the effect that heavily armed bandits took over the Police Station in the area and burnt it down after about two hours of gun battle with troops.
station was completely razed in an attack that started at midnight, according to the source.

Banks and other public buildings were reportedly bombed along with the Police Station.

The source who claimed to have witnessed the attack said the bandits also planted Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) that exploded simultaneously in addition to sporadic gun shots.

The source also said that the whole area was sealed by the unidentified gunmen whose number could not be ascertained because of they came in the dark. Several police officers and some of the bandits are believed to have died in the attack which lasted about two hours.

“We are trapped, and under fear, we need military support to, if not there is no certainty on our lives. As I speak, they are still firing”, he said.

In October, 2012, bandits invaded the town killing some 20 worshippers leaving a Mosque in an early morning raid in the area.

Calls made to spokespersons of the army and police were not returned as at the time of this report.

UPDATE: We have learnt that Governor Muktar Yero of Kaduna State has rushed this morning to Birnin Gwari town, the scene of yesterday’s brazen, five-hour operation by a group of armed bandits.

“The governor is still in town now,” a security source said.

Another source disclosed that the additional police contingent was not able to enter the town until the early hours of today. “The armed bandits operated for four, even five hours without any serious police challenge,” said the source.

News of the attacks was first received from students living in the town of Birnin Gwari in Kaduna State's Birnin Gwari local government area.

The attackers completely razed the police station in the attack that started at midnight, according to the source.

ECO Bank, Unity Bank, and First Bank branches in the town as well as other public buildings were also attacked and bombed along with the police station, according to one elderly witness. The source said the attackers appeared to use explosives in breaking into the banks.

The source said the bandits were part of a group of armed robbers believed to be hiding out in a nearby forest. He disclosed that, prior to yesterday’s attacks, the bandits had launched assaults in several villages and districts including Kuyelo and Randagi on Friday and Tuesday respectively.

The source also stated that the unidentified gunmen had sealed off the whole township last night before launching their attacks. A security source said that the Divisional Police Office (DPO) was out of the area at the time of the attacks last night. We have also learnt that soldiers who are part of “Operation Zaki” refused to move into the area at night to combat the attackers. The commanders of the soldiers were reportedly afraid of being ambushed at night by the armed bandits.

Last night’s attacks were not the first in the town’s recent history. In October, 2012, armed bandits invaded the town and killed some 20 worshippers leaving a mosque.
94  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Varsity worker to die by hanging for killing admission seeker on: 30-01-2013 06:37 PM
A 27-year-old clerical officer of the Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, one David Wonder  Erhirhie has been sentenced to death by an Orerokpe high court in the State, having found him guilty of killing a female student, Princess Chinoso Ijezie  who was seeking for admission at the University sometime in 2009.

Prosecution led by Mr. Theophilous Omenuwoma had told the court that “David Wonder, until the ugly incident was a junior staff with DELSU was an admission racketeer who collected the sum of N155,000 from the deceased to assist her to secure admission into the University.

“He however could not secure the admission for the deceased but in a bid to cover up the fraud he lured the late Princes Chinoso Ijezie to his house under the pretence that he wanted to refund the said amount but instead, he murdered and secretly buried her in a shallow grave close to his house before nemesis caught up with him”, prosecution added.

Prosecution called six witnesses to prove its case while the accused testified by himself and called no witness.

The court in convicting him stated that  “the punishment for a crime of this magnitude  is death penalty. This accused does not deserve less.

He is therefore sentenced to death by the neck until he is dead”.
95  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Mother sentenced to life in jail for killing her twins on: 29-01-2013 02:51 PM
A Swiss court sentenced a mother to life in jail on Tuesday after she confessed to smothering her seven-year-old twins with a pillow and killing a third child — after denying the crimes for years.

The Horgen court, in the canton of Zurich, found the 39-year-old Swiss citizen of Austrian origin guilty of murdering the twins, a boy and a girl, and of manslaughter for the death of the other child, a baby boy, court spokeswoman Bea Rosenberger told AFP.

The woman was handed a life term, which in Switzerland usually amounts to around 15 years behind bars, and ordered to undergo psychiatric therapy while in prison.

The woman, identified only as Bianca B. by Swiss media, had for years insisted she was not responsible for the twins’ deaths in late 2007, but suddenly changed her story in a tearful confession during her trial last month.

She told the court she had murdered them both and also admitted to smothering her first child, a seven-month-old boy believed until then to have died from sudden infant death syndrome in 1999.

“I wanted him to be quiet for a while,” she was quoted as saying by the ATS news agency.

Despite maintaining her innocence for a long time, Bianca B. was sentenced to life in prison for the twins’ deaths in an earlier trial in March 2010, but she was granted a retrial after the court determined her defence had been flawed.

She has been in jail since the end of 2007 awaiting a final verdict, and the five years already spent behind bars will be deducted from her sentence, Rosenberger said.

At the opening of her new trial on December 12, Bianca B. described in detail how on the evening of December 23, 2007, she had gone into her son’s room after placing the children’s Christmas gifts under the tree and had suddenly, without thinking, picked up a pillow and pressed it against his face “until he stopped moving.”

She had then gone into her daughter’s room and done the same to her, before realising what she had done.

“I didn’t want this,” she told the court, in tears.
96  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / EFCC’s claim on my Lekki property is bizarre – Ibori on: 28-01-2013 06:08 PM
ABUJA—FORMER Governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, who is serving a jail term in a London prison for money laundering, has described the recent allegation by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, that there was a new discovery of his secret mansion in Lekki, Lagos State, as bizarre, saying he built the house five years before he became governor of the state.

Chief Ibori condemned the publications in some Nigerian newspapers and on-line blogs that EFCC discovered his “secret mansion” located on 5, Alpha Beach Road, Lekki, Lagos, on January 24, 2013, adding that the claim being credited to EFCC’s spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujiaren, made it even more bizarre.

Media Assistant to Ibori,  Mr. Tony Eluemunor, in a statement, said that the house could not have been secret as it was listed in the Asset Declaration Forms he filled in 1999, 2003 and 2007.

He said: “Despite EFCC’s insinuations to the contrary, the Alpha Beach Road house was built as far back as 1994, and so could not have, by any leap of the imagination, been built with proceeds, corrupt or not corrupt, from my office as state governor because I began to live in that house five good years before I was voted into office.

“The only rational explanation for the emergence of this story is well known, and that is that facts are being twisted to deceive the public and as the confiscation process against Ibori progresses, some elements in EFCC may desperately be trying to manufacture things to uphold their often exaggerated stories about Ibori’s wealth.

“If the stories published about the house were actually based on EFCC’s statement, it means that EFCC had accepted that Ibori was actually enormously rich at least half a decade before he became governor of Delta State. After all, EFCC and the media called the house a “mansion,” describing it in superlative terms.”
97  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Death toll in Brazil nightclub fire above 150 on: 27-01-2013 05:19 PM
More than 150 people died early Sunday when a fire tore through a nightclub in the southern Brazilian city of Santa Maria during a boisterous student party, police said.

“We have confirmed more than 150 victims,” Santa Maria police commissioner Sandro Meinerz told Globo television.

The death toll from the inferno stood initially at 70 but rapidly increased as firefighters searched the charred remains of the establishment named “Kiss.”

Details of the tragedy were still sketchy. But according to media reports, the fire broke out after 2:00 am (0400 GMT) when the nightclub was hosting a university party featuring a rock band.

The band used pyrotechnics as part of its show, O Globo newspaper reported on its website. The paper said the popular club in the university town was packed with between 300 and 400 party goers when the fire erupted.

Santa Maria fire chief Guido de Melo said there was panic in the aftermath of the fire and many revelers were trampled or died from smoke inhalation.

“The main cause of death was asphyxiation,” de Melo was quoted as saying by Estadao newspaper.

Pictures published by local media showed firefighters dousing the burned-out red brick building with water to put out the flames.

“We have just taken the fire under control,” Colonel Silvia Fuchs of the local fire department was quoted by the G1 website as saying. “Now we are removing the bodies.”

According to O Globo, the dead were being taken to a nearby sports club, which has been converted to a makeshift morgue.

Family member were gathering outside in the hope of getting news of their loved ones.

Rio Grande do Sul governor Tarso Genro was expected in Santa Maria later Sunday, O Globo said.

“This is a sad Sunday,” he is quoted by the paper as saying in a Twitter message. “We are taking all possible passive and active measures.”

He did not elaborate.

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who is attending a regional summit in Chile, has been notified of the tragedy, O Globo said.

The town is home to the Federal University of Santa Maria.

Information emerging from the Senate has disclosed that 776 Nigerians are presently serving various jail terms in seven countries, including Cameroon, Gabon and Niger Republic. According to the upper legislative body, at its plenary session on Tuesday, the figure includes Spain (395); Gabon (126); Thailand (91); United States (62); Malaysia (43); Niger (30) and Cameroon (29).

The Senate however urged the Federal Government to seek for redress and restitution for the 14 Nigerians found not culpable out of the 27 deported from Spain recently. The resolution followed a motion by the chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Matthew Nwagwu, as, according to him, the motion became imperative, given the fact that many Nigerians suffered one form of unjust treatment or the other in their host countries.

Senator Nwagwu noted with concern the unfair treatment and harassment of Nigerians in foreign countries, leading to their intimidation, arrest, detention, torture, deportation and occasional deaths.

“It is not in all cases that our citizens are guilty of the offences they are alleged to have committed,” he said, adding that investigations by combined team of officers from the police, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the State Security Service (SSS) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) showed that 14 out of the recently deported 27 Nigerians from Spain were not guilty of the offences for which they were deported by the Spanish authorities.
