61  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / DonJazzy moves on with his flock:Dr SID, D’Prince, Wande Coal to South Africa on: 4-04-2012 07:42 PM
Since the news settled that D’banj and his best friend of many years Don Jazzy had kissed their business and perhaps personal relationships goodbye, there had been palpable fear that the music future of the rest of the Mo’Hits clan was under threat.

The heavy silence from Don Jazzy had not helped matters that even Dr SID in a tweet published some weeks back had not been able to hide his apprehension, acknowledging that their respective careers were in a “sensitive situation”.

But the hit making producer Don Jazzy has moved to calm all their fears.

In a recent trip to South Africa, Don Jazzy traveled alongside his ‘boys’ Dr SID, D’Prince and Wande Coal to launch the new Samsung Hi-Fi product which he reportedly helped design.

As expected, D’banj and his younger brother K-switch were not at the launch.

Industry watchers say this is Don Jazzy’s bold proclamation of who and who were now part of his new music family; a family that may have no place for D’ Banj’s younger brother K Switch who many conclude indirectly joined his brother in the walk out.

Dr Sid on his twitter account, posted a link to pictures of the four in a reassuring pose moments after reaching South Africa. This trip is coming amidst strong speculations Don Jazzy is cooking up a brand new record label where he would hold all the cards.

The Over the Moon crooner tweeted (@IamDrSID) here are a few pictures of the quartet having fun in South Africa…

Some fans that have seen the tweet momentarily wonder why SID used the tag quartet to describe the four instead of Mo’Hits as it has been done in the past. But then it is a momentary thought because almost immediately they realise that with the exit of D’Banj perhaps the name Mo’Hits couldn’t exist anymore....Don Jazzy moves on with his flock: takes Dr SID, D’Prince, Wande Coal to South Africa | nai jane du http://j.mp/HQMC6t

63  Forum / Politics / Obasanjo Resigns As PDP's BOT Chairman:What next for PDP, Jonathan? on: 4-04-2012 01:39 PM
ARGUABLY, former president and Chairman Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has a lot of ace up his political sleeves. He is full of suspense and strategy.

Twenty-four hours after leading a team of PDP top shots in the South-West geo-political zone to woo former Oyo State Governor, Senator Rasheed Ladoja back to the party, he threw in his towel yesterday as PDP BOT chair to “have a bit more time to devote to the international demand on me.” He was on the saddle for 58 months.

Since he returned to power on May 29,1999 as civilian head of state, 20 years after he voluntarily quit power as military ruler, Obasanjo has remained a major factor and power broker in the world’s largest black nation.

Though his eight-year reign as president  was eventful, his alleged attempt to go for a third term that would have seen him leading the country for a cumulative 15 years smeared his record as a non-sit-tight leader in a continent characterised by sit-tight rulers.

Before bowing out on May 29, 2007, however, Obasanjo ensured that his party retained presidential power through late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Dr Goodluck Jonathan. He also paved the way for a post-president role for himself in the PDP. He got the party’s constitution amended to reserve the BOT slot for only former presidents and national chairmen. The BOT was also made the highest decision-making body of the party as contained in Section 12.76 of the party’s constitution.

Thus, Obasanjo had little or no hassles picking the top seat on June 27, 2007, less than a month after leaving Aso Rock. In a deft move, he had his predecessor, Chief Tony Anenih, pushed aside

As BOT chair, Anenih had fixed the meeting for 8pm, but the time was changed without his consent to 10 a.m and the meeting did not start until 12.30 p.m and ended at about 3 p.m. Obasanjo’s election at the Kano Hall of Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, was the first time in PDP’s history that  the board of trustees meeting would be held in the morning. Past gatherings had always been in the night. Though Anenih was absent at the meeting, his wife, Josephine Anenih was present at the meeting where the decision was taken to replace his husband.

With his emergence as chairman of the board, Obasanjo brought his influence to bear on the affairs of the party. When Yar’Adua became terminally ill about two years into his four year tenure, Obasanjo, who first visited the ailing president in a Saudi hospital returned to champion the crusade for Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to be sworn-in as acting president as Yar’Adua did not hand-over to him before traveling out.

The polity was intensely divided over the matter. Some power forces, especially from the North opposed the move f....Obasanjo Resigns As PDP’s BOT Chairman:What next for PDP, Jonathan?|nai jane du http://bit.ly/Heb9q3

69  Forum / The Buzz Central / Jay-Z and Beyoncé threaten Rihanna •Stay away from Chris Brown or else… on: 1-04-2012 01:22 PM
HE is the most hyped child in the world and just days after her birth, she featured in her father’s album “Glory”. Her cries was sampled at the end of the track making her, the youngest child officially in the rap business and now she might be the only one who can save aunt RiRi (Rihanna) from herself.

According to Now Magazine, Jay-Z and Beyonce has threatened to ban Rihanna from seeing their Newborn daughter, Blue Ivy Carter if she continues her self-destructive liaison with Chris Brown.

Jay-Z who is like a big brother and mentor to Rihanna is said to be very upset with her, after rumours of an affair with her ex-boyfriend who battered her after 2009 Grammys broke. A friend of the couple claims Jay-Z got “Beyonce to tell Rihanna he doesn’t want her around the baby if she takes Chris back. He wants Blue to have positive role models, not someone who’d take back a man who hit her”.

Rihanna 24, and Chris Brown 22, had been a couple up until 2009 Grammys. The couple got into a row at Clive Davis’s pre-Grammy party which heated up as they pulled over in the L.A Hancock Park area. During the argument that ensued, Rihanna threw the keys to Brown’s rented Lamborghini out of the window. He went in search of it and on returning, beat her within an inch of her life. When she came round, Brown had fled the scene and Rihanna in need of hospitalisation. The “Umbrella” singer became the poster lady for domestic abuse and spoke out about hidden abuse stating she wanted to be seen as an example of recovery. In 2009, she told Glamour magazine in US: ‘Domestic violence is a big secret. ‘No kid goes around and lets people know their parents fight. Teenage girls can’t tell their parents that their boyfriend beat them up. ‘You don’t dare let your neighbour know that you fight. It’s one of the things we [women] will hide, because it’s embarrassing.

Adding: ‘My story was broadcast all over the world for people to see, and they have followed every step of my recovery. ‘The positive thing that has come out of my situation is that people can learn from that. ‘I want to give as much insight as I can to young women, because I feel like ‘I represent a voice that really isn’t heard. Now I can help speak for those women.’ But she went back to Chris to the amazement of those who applauded her when she initially left but she finally took herself out of the relationship as she would not want those looking up to her to think it is okay to be hit and it is alright to be with an abuser. In an interview with Diane Sawyer she explained how victim go through self denial and back to their abuser “ the minute the physical wounds go away, you put it in the back of your head wondering what could I possibly have said to make him do this”. When asked if she will ever take him back she said “I can’t answer that question right now because you never know what the future holds. He was my best friend and we were in love. We spent two years of our lives in a relationship. Love doesn’t just go right away” Right now Chris Brown and Rihanna are back into each other’s lives with speculation of an affair which her supporters especially Jay-z is against. RiRi claims her relationship with Brown is purely professional, to advance her career. Defending their collaboration, Rihanna called KIIS FM and explain her decision to record two duets with her ex-abuser.

‘I reached out to him about doing Birthday Cake because that’s the only person that really…… it made sense to do the record, Just as a musician, despite everything else, that was going to be the person,’. She explained : ‘I thought about rappers, and I’ve done that so many times, and the hottest R&B artist out right now is Chris Brown. So I wanted him on the track.’ In return, she provided vocals on a remix of Brown’s new dance song “Turn up the Music”. ‘It was a trade off,’ she added.

‘We did two records, one for my fans and one for his fans, and that way our fans can come together. There shouldn’t be a divide, you know, it’s music and it’s innocent.’

Though RiRi is claiming professional collaboration, her tweet is hinting on reconciliation. She tweeted ‘When they see me with you, wonder what the crowd would say? When they find us together, what will all the people say?’ and Brown singing ‘girl I wanna f*** you right now. Been a long time, I’ve been missing your body’, concurs Rihanna’s tweet. Little wonder big brother Jay-z is not buying the “it’s innocent” claim but rather issued an ultimatum, showing her tough love.....http://bit.ly/H5KWVY
70  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Commissioner slapped nurse in Delta State on: 1-04-2012 12:56 PM
… I didn’t – Commissioner Otumara
THERE was controversy, at the weekend, in Delta State over the allegation that the Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Otumara, slapped a nursing officer at the Central Hospital, Mrs. Akata Oghenero, just as the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, NANNM, in the state  is spoiling for a showdown over the matter.

But the commissioner, Dr. Joseph Otumara, swore to Sunday Vanguard on phone, yesterday, that he didn’t slap Mrs. Oghenero, saying that he only tried to stop her from making calls with her GSM phone while work was going on during his visit to the hospital on March 29.

The  incident was said to have happened at the gynecologist ward of the Central Hospital in the presence of many nurses and officials of the Ministry of Health, Asaba.

Otumara said the medical director of the hospital cautioned the nurse to stop her noisy phone call, but she rebuffed the order, adding that it was her defiance that attracted his attention, and action in trying to stop her from disturbing others.

However, nurses at the Central Hospital, Warri commenced a strike action on Friday over the incident and, according to a privileged source, “They are waiting at home for the state leadership to declare a state-wide action from tomorrow (Monday).

But, a reliable source hinted that the bone of contention was being discussed between the commissioner and the leadership of the nurses, and the differences might be sorted out.

However, the Forum for Justice and Human Rights Defence, FJHD, in Delta State, has demanded that the commissioner should tender an unreserved apology to the nurse or resign his appointment.

The group, in a statement by its national coordinator, Oghenejabor Ikimi, stated, “We are in receipt of a protest letter minuted upon and sent to our office by Comrade Ojei J.O, the Central Hospital, Warri Unit Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives.

“The said letter is headlined thus: Letter of protest: Physical Assault on the person of Mrs. Akata Oghenero, a Nursing Officer II at the Central Hospital, Warri by Dr. Joseph Otumara, Hon Commissioner for Health, Delta State.”

The letter went on: “On 29 March, 2012, while Mrs. Akata Oghenero, a Nursing Officer II at the Central Hospital, Warri was on duty in the Gynae ward of the said hospital, the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Delta State, Dr. Joseph Otumara, and his entourage came into the said ward and, in the process, Mrs. Akata Oghenero, in company of some student nurses who were present, immediately stood up to acknowledge his presence, while the said commissioner and his entourage walked through to the maternity ward.

“Shortly afterwards, Mrs. Akata Oghenero, while seated and receiving an emergency call on her mobile phone, suddenly heard a slap on her right check with a thunderous voice,  ‘Why did you not stand up the second time’ and, upon turning her face, Mrs. Akata Oghenero discovered her assailant to be Dr. Joseph Otumara, the Health Commissioner, who was still fuming.

“At that point, Mrs. Akata Oghenero was speechless, humiliated, battered and weeping; there and then, the permanent secretary, Hospitals Management Board, Asaba, requested for the name of Mrs. Akata Oghenero, threatening to issue her a query and relieve her of her job”.

Ikimi went on: “Assuming, without conceding that Mrs. Akata Oghenero had committed an offence while Dr. Joseph Otumara was visiting, slapping a nurse on duty is definitely not one of the ways to discipline an erring public officer and, as such, we call on the said Health Commissioner to publicly tender an unreserved apology to the said Mrs. Akata Oghenero or, in the alternative, resign his appointment as he is not a fit and proper person to hold a public office.

‘’In the final analysis, we shall not hesitate to enforce the fundamental rights of Mrs. Akata Oghenero on her behalf and claim damages at large against the said Dr. Joseph Otumara in person, should he fail to heed to our above warnings”...http://bit.ly/H5HxGB
71  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Oct 1st bombing suspect, Okah, collapses, unconscious on: 1-04-2012 12:47 PM
ONE of the suspects  arrested in connection with the October 1, 2010 Independence Day bombings in Abuja, Charles Okah, reportedly collapsed inside his cell at Kuje Prisons, Abuja, at the weekend, and was rushed  to the National Hospital, Abuja, by prisons’ officials.

Sunday Vanguard learnt that he had a seizure and fainted, on Friday night. He was taken to the hospital around 10.00 p.m. in a  critical condition.

His lawyer, Festus Keyamo, told Sunday Vanguard, yesterday evening, “I am monitoring the situation”.

A source said Charles, a brother to Henry Okah, one of the suspected leaders of Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND, who is currently in detention in South-Africa and also undergoing trial over the same offense, was locked in the cell with two others.

Charles is facing trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja, along with other suspects for the Abuja bombings. One of the suspects, Francis Osovwo, alias General Gbokos, had died, March 12, in Kuje Prisons, allegedly because of the chemical substance he inhaled during a fumigation of his cell.

Our source said that Charles was met “lying on the bare floor covered in dust and dirt” by a warder on night duty.
“His blood pressure was very low and his pulse non-existent. He was later stretchered out to the prisons’ clinic, where the prison staff tried to revive him.

“They failed in their attempt. He was later carried unconscious into an ambulance and conveyed to the National Hospital, Abuja”.

Speculations were rife as the cause of the seizure. Some said it was due to intense heat which he was subjected to in his solitary cell, while others said it was due to his strange neurological and medical condition....http://bit.ly/H6IEdQ
72  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 42 years after, civil war bomb explodes in Enugu on: 1-04-2012 12:33 PM
42 years after the Nigerian civil war ended, a bomb, believed to have been dropped during the period, exploded in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State. There were, however, no casualties, the police said.

The war, which saw the south-east attempting to break away from the Nigerian federation under the name, Biafra, started in 1967 and ended in 1970.

The bomb exploded on Friday, in the rice mill section of Oye Market in Awgu Local Government Area of the state at about 2.50 p.m. (1450 hours).

Although the source of the bomb could not be immediately ascertained, experts said it could be one of the unexploded bombs dropped during the war.

Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the blast, said the command had commenced full scale investigations into the incident.

”We have commenced full scale investigations into the blast suspected to be that of the unexploded ordinance that was used and abandoned during the civil war.

”The incident allegedly occurred at about 1450hrs of 30/03/12 at rice mill part of Oye Market of Awgu in Enugu State of Nigeria. No casualty was reported as there was no loss of life or property,” the police spokesman said.

According to the PPRO, men of the anti-bomb squad of the command picked the remnant of the suspected unexploded ordinance for necessary analysis.

Amaraizu recalled the sensitization campaign earlier carried out by the command in conjunction with the media over the devastating effect of the unexploded ordinances and advised the people not to tamper with them any time they come across such explosives in their farms or any other area affected by the civil war. The command, however, assured the people of the state of “maximum safety.”

The Humanitarian De-miners from the Ministry of Defence, Abuja had, in 2010, carried out scanning of the areas ravaged by the civil war in South Eastern Nigeria and recovered several bombs and other explosives which were later destroyed.

Mr. Bala Yakubu, the leader of the group, disclosed that several bombs, including conventional and locally made landmines used during the civil war, were still posing serious danger in the war affected areas.

Only last year, a sophisticated bomb was recovered from a building site belonging to an Anglican Church along One Day Road, Enugu by operatives of the state police bomb squad... http://bit.ly/H5EHRU

75  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Prostitute dies ‘on duty’, lands client in trouble on: 1-04-2012 07:44 AM
The popular Tiv yam market, in Alaba Rago, along the Badagry expressway, Lagos is always a beehive of activities. In the day time, business activities thrive, with traders from different parts of the country shopping. At night, commercial sex workers cluster around to compete for male customers.

The client, muhammadeen NURU

But a bizarre drama, which changed the turn out of the night event, occurred recently, after one of the commercial sex workers was found dead inside a room in an hotel in the area.

The deceased , later identified as Faith Akin, was reportedly discovered naked with foamy substance on her mouth.
There were different accounts of how 24-year-old Faith died, but a version said she was poisoned before the suspect had carnal knowledge of her.

Another version had it that the suspect, identified as Nuru, took a local sex stimulant which the deceased could not withstand. Yet another account said that the suspect intended to use the dead lady’s virginal fluid for money ritual.

But in this exclusive interview with the suspect, detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department(SCID), Yaba, he described all the accounts as false.Although he claimed the deceased was his girl friend, when asked what her name was, he couldn’t say. But after a while, he admitted to have picked her among the commercial sex workers that beckoned on him that night.

Narrating how it happened, Nuru said, “ I do not know her name like I earlier claimed. But I usually saw her around the area every night. So, that night, I told her I would be needing her all through the night and she billed me N2,000; we checked into the hotel at about 11p.m. I had her twice all through”.

Asked if he took any segxwal enhancer, he shook his head and replied, “ No. I only took Indian hemp. I did not take buratancshi (local segxwal enhancer) as speculated.”

Also asked at what point he noticed his companion was no longer breathing, he replied, “ I cannot tell because, most times , these girls will just stay calm while you do your ‘thing’.

So, I did not know if she was dead. Again , I never had any sinister motive . I was not with any charm, neither did I strangle her. She was the person that undressed herself”.

But one of the hotel attendants reportedly stated that they sensed trouble in the morning after the suspect went to ease himself. According to his statement, “ when he went out to ease himself, he left the door ajar and, when I peeped in, I noticed the girl was foaming from the mouth and I quickly rushed to report”.

Report also said the suspect was caught right in the act when policemen from Ojo police division, who were contacted, arrived the hotel.

But 28-year-old Nuru maintained: “ I did not know when she died. The next thing I saw in the morning were policemen and some of the hotel staff. It was then I knew something was wrong. If I knew she was dead, at least I would have fled the scene to avoid being arrested. I stayed back because I was not aware. At a point, I thought she was sleeping. Since I have been sleeping with women, a thing like this had never happened to me.

“I did not buy her any food because most of these ashewo do not allow their male customers to buy them food simply because they would think you want to either poison them or induce them to sleep , without paying them after the ‘show’. I did not also buy her any drink. Immediately she came in , I gave her N1,000 as part payment , with the intention to pay her the balance in the morning. That has always been the tradition”.

When news of Faith’s death filtered around, next day, her partners in business reportedly avoided their Tiv yam market zone, apparently for fear of being arrested . Also, some hawkers who sell local viagra (sex enhancer ) there, were nowhere, as they also feared they would be arrested, following the rumour that the suspect took one of the local sex enhancer he bought from one of the hawkers.

But back at the deceased home, her mother, was shocked as she is reportedly trying to come to terms with the reality of her daughter’s death. Faith, as gathered, told her mother she was going to visit a friend that fateful day but never returned home.

Apprehension set in after waiting for two days without any knowledge of her whereabouts, until the news was broken to them through a friend of Faith.

Nuru was moved from Ojo police division to the Lagos SCID for further investigations, from where he might be charged to court, while the remains of 24-year-old Faith, who hailed from Ikare- Akoko, Ondo State have been buried by her family...http://bit.ly/H54iKJ

80  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Harvard Professor Slams Obama’s World Bank Nomination on: 25-03-2012 12:31 AM
Amidst early praise for President Obama’s nomination of Dartmouth President Jim Yong Kim as head of the World Bank, Lant Pritchett, a tenured professor at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government who worked at the World Bank for 17 years, is blasting Kim’s nomination as “a terrible idea.”

Says Pritchett, who teaches courses in the practice of international development, “It’s an embarrassment to the U.S. You cannot with a straight face say this person is the most qualified to lead the World Bank.”

An infectious disease specialist, Kim helped found a Boston-based nonprofit called Partners in Health that trains community health workers in developing countries to make home visits to treat diseases like TB. Kim also directed the World Health Organization’s department of H.I.V./AIDS. But unlike past World Bank presidents, he has no experience in banking, policy making, economics or development. Kim has been president of Dartmouth for the last three years. Kim was also awarded a MacArthur “genius” fellowship in 2003, and was born in Seoul, South Korea, moving to the U.S. with his family at age 5. Forbes ran a recent profile of him here.

In the World Bank’s 68-year history, the U.S. has always nominated the president, who must be voted on by the Bank’s 25-member executive board. This year, Angola, South Africa and Nigeria nominated a competing candidate, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Nigerian finance minister and a former World Bank official. Pritchett insists she is much more qualified than Kim. He points out that the U.S. has less than a 20% share of board votes and though he gives Kim a 60% chance of being appointed, he says that countries like India and China could wind up opposing Kim’s nomination and pressing for Okonjo-Iweala.

“There is no way you can say with a straight face that this man is more qualified to head the World Bank than Ngozi,” insists Pritchett. Okonjo-Iweala has tackled corruption in Nigeria and because she has worked inside the Bank and as the Bank’s government counterpart in a developing country with complex problems, Pritchett insists she has precisely the kind of experience needed in a World Bank leader.

“At best, Kim has worked with ministers of health, but they are in one of many, many government agencies,” says Pritchett. “A minister of finance has to make hard choices across sectors. Having the experience of a minister of finance is the optimal experience for being president of the World Bank.” Adds Pritchett, nominating Kim “is like picking the short stop for the New York Yankees out of the scrub leagues.”

Pritchett points out that the World Bank, whose mission is to reduce global poverty by providing financial resources and sharing expertise with developing nations, works with fragile governments like Pakistan and Afghanistan on complex development issues, from raising tax revenues to elevating GDP to reforming education.

For Pritchett, there is an important distinction between the kind of work Kim has done, which he calls “charity work,” and the complex tasks engaged in by the World Bank. “Development is about countries becoming prosperous, democratic and capable, like being able to deliver the mail, having police forces that work and kids who get educated,” says Pritchett. “Charity work is helping people cope with the fact that they live in places where they don’t have those things.”

Pritchett, who supported Obama’s presidential bid, says that the President overlooked much more qualified candidates like PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi and Lawrence Summers, the former Treasury secretary who is a colleague and friend of Pritchett’s at Harvard. “The Obama administration had some concerns about the political left flank on this and did the craven thing,” says Pritchett.

Adds Pritchett, “there’s no question that Kim has done terrific things, but I wouldn’t nominate Mother Teresa to head the World Bank if she were still alive.”
