61  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Boko Haram claims ‘victory’ over Kaduna bombs on: 18-06-2012 05:02 PM
Boko Haram Islamists on Monday claimed responsibility for the suicide attacks on three churches in northern Nigeria’s Kaduna state that killed at least 16 people and sparked riots that killed over 80 people more.

“Allah has given us victory in the attacks we launched against churches in (the cities of) Kaduna and Zaria which resulted in the deaths of many Christians and security personnel,” said the email statement sent by Abul Qaqa, the purported Boko Haram spokesman who has similarly claimed previous attacks.

Emergency agencies continued to search for bodies of people killed in the reprisal attacks that followed the bombing of the churches.

While official death toll has jumped to 45 from 36, unofficial sources estimated the dead to be over 100, including over 300 injured.
62  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / LASG Begins Coroner’s Inquest Over Dana Air Crash on: 18-06-2012 05:00 PM
The state government Monday began inquest into the cause of the 3 June Dana plane crash at Iju-Ishaga, in which over 150 people lost their lives.

Coroner of Alimosho District in Lagos,  Mr. Oyetade Alexander Komolafe, a Magistrate, was assigned to the matter.

The inquest was ordered last Thursday by the Coroner-judge of Lagos State, Justice Lateefah Okunnu.

The order was sequel to a request made by the Falana and Falana Chambers.

At the inaugural sitting, Mrs. Funmi Falana, while addressing  the court, said the chambers of of Olisa Agabkoba was also interested in the matter.
She told the court that in line with the relevant laws certain persons and agencies ought to be summoned before the court.

Both Mr. Komolafe and Mrs. Falana agreed between themselves what persons and agencies should be invited by the court.
Persons expected to appear before the court while inquest lasts include, the Minister of Aviation, Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Lagos and Ogun States, representatives of  Dana Air, National Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Lagos State Police Command, and the Lagos Airport Command of the Police.
Others are Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), the Nigerian Red Cross, Cleanserve Oil, Sahara Oil, MRS, AP, Total, Conoil, Nigerian Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, relatives of victims of the plane crash and those on the ground, surviving victims, among others.

The coroner then adjourned till 12 July for the parties to be served and to enable the chambers of Olisa Agbakoba to prepare for the inquest.

In the  request to the Coroner-judge, the principal partner of Falana & Falana Chambers, Mr. Femi Falana  noted: “We have confirmed that the aircraft was allowed to fly even though it was defective. The distress call made by the pilot of the ilfated aircraft several minutes before the crash was ignored by the Airport Authorities while the management of the disaster was crude as members of the public had to use bare hands in the rescue operations.”

Falana had drawn on Section 15 of the Lagos State Coroner’s Law 2007 which provides that an inquest shall hold whenever a Coroner is informed that the death of a person within his District was “in a violent, unnatural or suspicious situation.”

Justice Okunnu then directed  Komolafe to conduct an inquest as desired, and thereafter send a copy of findings and recommendations in that regard to him.”
63  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Lady smuggles snake Into PDP Rally on: 18-06-2012 04:56 PM
An attempt by a woman to smuggle snake into the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium-venue of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign rally in Benin on Saturday was foiled by vigilant policemen at the gate of the stadium.

Vice President Namadi Sambo, national and state leaders of and several thousands of PDP supporters had converged on the stadium to officially kick-start the election campaign of the party’s candidate in the July 14 governorship election in the state, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (retd.)

But the timely interception at the main gate of the stadium by policemen at the gate of the stadium averted what could have created a chaotic atmosphere, had the woman sneaked into the stadium with her deadly package undetected.

The snake woman, adorned in purple top and blue pair of trousers, in company of three young men, attracted the curiosity of the mobile policemen screening those going into the stadium when she attempted to jump the long queue.

Upon interrogation, the snake, a cobra measuring about one metre was discovered in a white round transparent plastic container with perforated lid in the hand of the woman who spoke in Pidgin English and Hausa languages.

The security agents however saved the woman from the wrath of the angry crowd who attempted to mob her.

She was however ordered to leave the vicinity of the stadium while still clutching her snake in her hand.

When PMNEWS attempted to take the photograph of the snake and speak with the woman and her companions, she angrily threatened to open and release the reptile if she was not left alone.

65  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Jonathan’s Destiny Is To Bankrupt Nigeria –Pastor Bakare on: 18-06-2012 03:48 PM
Convener of the Save Nigeria Group, SNG,  Pastor Tunde Bakare addressed a press conference on Sunday in Lagos over the $620,000 bribery scandal involving Hon. Farouk Lawan and Mr. Femi Otedola and other issues affecting the nation.

Below is what the man of God said about President Goodluck Jonathan, Hon. Farouk Lawan and the Chairman of Zenon Petroleum, Mr. Femi Otedola:

“President Jonathan is on a mission to bankrupt and balkanise Nigeria... He is dancing to the drumbeat of destiny. His destiny is to bankrupt Nigeria. He has the full support of corporate cowboys and oil vultures. It is clear that Nigeria is a nation under divine judgment. We need a cleansing in this land and if we do not stand up now to do what we ought to do, there may not be 2015 for Nigerians.”

“Otedola gives the bribe and Farouk Lawan takes the bribe, both of them are criminals. But they cleverly said he (Otedola) contacted the State Security Service in order to give marked money.

“Where did they get the money from? Did the money come from government? These are oil vultures. What is the foundation of his riches; is it not corruption? Has Nigeria not been celebrating corrupt fellows? Corruption in Nigeria is now endemic.

“In a decent society, both Otedola and Lawan and all the people involved would be behind bars by now. Unfortunately, Lawan’s greed and naivety got him into a terrible mess. He had the opportunity of being a hero; he ended up a villain because of naivety and greed.”

“Revolution could happen in several ways because God will not come down; He will always use people. I want you to hear me loud and clear: I am not asking for anybody’s blood to flow because the God that I serve shed his blood for mankind.

“He does not take people’s blood. But whatever way God will deliver this nation as He did in Israel he must deliver us, else we are going through extinction. If the wicked will not relent; if they continue their evil ways, they will have themselves to blame when God’s fury comes upon them..."
66  Forum / The Buzz Central / Shonekan Calls For Privatisation Of Seaports on: 18-06-2012 03:45 PM
Former Head of State, Chief Ernest Shonekan has called onthe Federal Government to consider the possibility of outright privatisation of the Nigerian seaports.

Shonekan, who was the Chairman of the 12th Maritime Seminar for Judges, jointly organised by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NCS) and the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja recentlysaid the possibility of outright privatisation should be explored rather than concession, which was done on Public Private Arrangement (PPP).

Twenty six terminals in Nigerian ports have been handed over to private concessionaires under port concession arrangement.

According to the former president, the maritime industry occupied a pivotal position in the nation’s economy, adding that the economy was highly dependent on international trade, hence the need to facilitate maritime laws for the nation to become one of the largest economies by year 2020.

“For the nation to grow, we need to continue to use maritime laws as effective tools in our transformation process.”

Shonekan added that piracy and other criminal activities were part of the major challenges confronting maritime activities in Africa and other parts of the world, adding that international piracy and criminal activities deterred shipping.

Shonekan said discussions on why the cabotage law had been impeded should be a priority at the three-day seminar in Abuja.

He advised that the seminar should also be used to explore the possibility of actualising the objectives of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Content Development Act 2012.

Head coach of Rwanda national football team, Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojovic, has described his team 0-2 loss to Nigeria’s Super Eagles on Saturday in Calabar, as a major setback in his bid to bring back his young side to reckoning in African football.

After bowing out of the qualification for 2013 Africa Nations Cup finals, the Amavubi Stars head coach has promised to put much emphasis on young players for the remaining World Cup qualifiers, which resumes next year.

Micho told Times Sport: “It is disappointing to miss out on qualifying for Africa Nations Cup finals. It is a set back, but we can take the positives from this experience.”

He added, “After this, we will need to analyse the whole squad in order to see what to do for the future of the team.”

“We need to look for young players who are eager to play for their country, players who are willing to do and give their best ahead of the next World Cup qualifier against Mali.

69  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Should I give my baby up for adoption? on: 18-06-2012 02:59 PM
My parents are Nigerians, so  I am a Nigerian by nationality. However, I was born and grew up in the United States. I am presently in Australia though, because I school here. I have a very big problem and I need advice, but I will try to make is as short as possible. I have a boyfriend and we have been together since my high school. I am a christian and I don't believe in premarital sex. Also my parents are pastors. I had kept to this rule for the 20 years of my life. Unfortunately, sometime earlier this year, some unforeseen things happened and my boyfriend and I slept together.

My parents always use me as an example to our family friends and they always talk about how they are so proud of the fact that I am keeping myself for marriage. Anyways, the unfortunate thing wasn't just that we had sex, but I also got pregnant. Abortion is not an option for me because I am strongly against it, but my friend here has a suggestion for me. She says I should keep the baby, give birth to it and take it to an orphanage home here in Australia before I go back home. This sounds like a perfect plan because I don't plan on going home anytime soon. So by the time I go home, nobody will know what happened. Do you think I should do what she advises and go back home pretending like nothing happened? Or should I tell my parents and carry the baby back home? Facing the embarrassment, ridicule and scorn from family friends, church members and people who look up to my parents?

On the other hand, my boyfriend thinks I should keep the baby but that whatever happens, I shouldn't say he is responsible. Please advise me because I am seriously considering dropping the baby in the orphanage.
Thank you so much. Please publish this, I really want to have the opinion of a lot of people .

72  Forum / The Buzz Central / Crash Averted In Abuja As British Airways Overshoot Runway on: 18-06-2012 02:10 PM
But for providence, Nigeria and Nigerians would have been thrown into another round of mourning as a result of aviation disaster as a British Airways aircraft overshot the taxiway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Int'l Airport in Abuja.

Reliable sources told  that the situation was as a result of yet another power failure, saying the airfield lighting on the runway failed just as the plane was to torch down.

"BA’s Boeing 747 aircraft arrived at the Abuja airport around 5:15am, but as the pilot was trying to taxi the aircraft to the apron, the airfield lighting on the runway packed up, which forced the pilot to overshoot the taxiway," a source said.

As a result of the incident,  gathered, the aircraft was forced to remain on the runway for close to an hour before the fault was rectified.

Although the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, is denying that the incident involving the BA aircraft was a result of power failure. They claimed it was because of the closure of part of the taxiway owing to ongoing repairs.

But an insider source insisted that no repair work was going on that early morning (5:11am) on the runway, adding that NAMA officials are just "trying to hide the shameful situation".

“But when the priest orders you, you must say something.”

While assuring that the Police will do everything possible to protect the innocent and bring the lawless to book, Jonathan however called for the support and prayers of every Nigerian for the peace of the nation and for the success of his administration.
74  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Pregnant woman dies two days after husband’s brutality on: 18-06-2012 01:24 PM
A pregnant woman, Mrs. Funmilayo Ajibola, died last Wednesday in Badagry, Lagos State after being allegedly brutalised by her husband, Kola. The 30-year-old housewife had been a victim of domestic abuse for years before she died on the fateful day.

Funmilayo’s cousin, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said Kola, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, was a jealous husband who always suspected his wife’s movements.

She said, “Kola is a very jealous husband. My cousin changed her phone lines more than 15 times throughout their six years marriage lasted because anytime Kola saw a strange number on her phone, he would destroy the SIM card.

“Sometimes, if she came back late or went out, he would beat her. There was a time she visited her father and when she got back home late, Kola told her to pick between him and her father.
“According to a young girl that lives with the couple, on Sunday night, Funmilayo received a call from her maternal uncle and when Kola saw the number, he started beating her. He did not even listen to her explanation.”

The cousin said when the beating got out of hand, the landlord intervened and took Funmilayo to his flat.
The landlord was said to have told Funmilayo to go back to her husband’s apartment believing that his anger would have subsided but Kola was said to have continued to beat her.

PUNCH Metro learnt that although the deceased did not die after the beating, she started exhibiting strange symptoms before her death.

Her cousin said, “Although I wasn’t there, the young girl that lives with them told me that Funmilayo was unconscious for a while, making Kola to become scared.
“Kola rushed her to a nearby hospital where she started to vomit blood. The hospital refused to admit her because they owed the hospital some money.

“Kola then took her back to the house and invited an auxiliary nurse to come and attend to her but her health continued to deteriorate.”
The nurse was said to have given the deceased some injections and bags of drip.
“The young girl that lives with them told me that on Tuesday, Funmilayo ate some rice but vomited it soon after. When her health did not improve, the nurse told Kola that she could no longer locate her vein,” our source said.

It was learnt that when Funmilayo died on Wednesday, Kola took her corpse to the Badagry General Hospital mortuary and told the attendant that his wife died of pregnancy complications.
He was said to have promised to return but later fled. Our correspondent learnt that neighbours immediately informed members of Funmilayo’s family who then came to 5, Ilufe Street, Ibereko Bus Stop, Badagry where the couple resided.

It was learnt that when all efforts to trace Kola failed, his younger brother, was arrested by policemen attached to Badagry Police Division.

At the station, Kola’s brother revealed his location and policemen immediately arrested him.
A police source told our correspondent that the 33-year-old suspect admitted beating his wife.
“I am not a doctor but there were bruises on the corpse and there is no doubt that Kola beat her up and he has confessed. He however said he did not kill her,” he said.

Funmilayo’s  cousin however berated the police on how the investigations were being handled.
She said, “Kola has been beating Funmilayo for a long time to the extent that the landlord had issued them a quit notice for fear that he might kill her.

“Police should have invited the landlord for questioning as well as the nurse that was treating Funmilayo. Also, the case should have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department by now,” she said.
When contacted the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said the command would ensure that a thorough investigation was carried out.

She said, “Investigation will be done professionally. The Badagry Division has to conclude preliminary investigations before transferring the case to the SCID.
“Also, Kola will be charged with murder because all evidence points to him. It’s a clear case and there will be no cover up.

“We are waiting for approval from a magistrate court before going ahead with the autopsy and once all things are in order, he’ll be charged to court.”

76  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Wife beat husband to death with bare hands Found Guilty on: 18-06-2012 12:39 PM
A Pretoria woman who beat her husband to death with her bare hands in 2010 was this week found guilty of murder by the Pretoria District Court.

Rachel Elizabeth “Rolene” Botha, 55, sat on her husband, Johan Botha, in a motorcycle shop, screamed “Vrek, jou poes!” [die, you jerk] and smashed his head repeatedly on the concrete floor.

According to the post-mortem report, Johan had sustained multiple head injuries, several broken ribs and severe bruising.

Three witnesses told the court that on the day of the murder, Rolene had arrived at the shop, demanding to see her husband. The shop had formerly belonged to the Bothas, but they had sold it to Johan Botha’s brother and his wife, to whom they owed money.

An argument ensued, during which Rolene’s sister-in-law, Tania Botha, telephoned Johan, who arrived and told his wife to leave.

Rolene punched and pushed her husband, who then fell down, and she continued the assault.

Her claim of self-defence and version of events was rejected.

Rolene also told the court that she was quite sober during the attack on her husband, as she had only had “three doubles with water” beforehand.

The case was postponed for pre-sentencing reports.
77  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Egypt Islamists claim presidency on: 18-06-2012 12:07 PM
Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood claimed on Monday that its candidate had won the country's first free presidential election, defeating Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister and ending 60 years of rule by presidents drawn from the armed forces.
An election committee source told Reuters that Islamist Mohamed Mursi, a United States-trained engineer, was comfortably ahead of former air force General Ahmed Shafik with most of the votes tallied, but that the count had yet to be officially finalised.
However, new head of state is likely to remain subordinate to the military for some time at least. In yet another twist in Egypt's tortuous path from revolution to democracy, the ruling military council issued a decree as voting ended on Sunday that set strict limits on the president's powers. On the eve of the election, it had already dissolved the Islamist-led parliament.
Liberal and Islamist opponents denounced a "military coup".
The chaotic end to the race, as Shafik's camp challenged the Brotherhood's claim overnight, and the last-minute intervention by the generals who pushed out Mubarak in the name of the people, were in keeping with a transition that was meant to chart a new course for the Arab world's most populous nation but has left most of the 82 million Egyptians weary and confused.
Both Egypt's Western allies, long wary of the rise of political Islam, as well as neighbouring Israel, worried about its 1979 peace treaty with Cairo, have looked on with alarm as its economy totters and hostile rhetoric gets a wider airing.
"Mohamed Mursi is the first popularly elected civilian president of Egypt," the official website of Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party announced in the early hours of Monday.
But an aide to Shafik, an ex-military man like Mubarak, contested that and said the group was "hijacking the election."

The House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Privileges is to probe allegation of $620,000 bribery leveled against former chairman of the adhoc committee on subsidy probe Rep. Farouk Lawan (PDP, Kano) by  oil baron Femi Otedola.
The Chairman of the committee, Rep. Gambo Dan Musa (CPC, Katsina), said the investigation would commence next week.

Otedola had admitted to given Lawan and the subsidy committee secretary Boniface Emenalo the sum of $620,000 in the wake of consideration of the subsidy probe report.

The House had during its special emergency session last Friday directed the Ethics committee to investigate the allegations and report back in two weeks.

Speaking to Daily Trust yesterday on the telephone, Dan Musa said his committee will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) to decide on the modus operandi of the probe.

“We have two weeks as dateline so we will most likely start next week but we have to meet as a committee to fix the mode of operation,” Dan Musa said.

The lawmaker disclosed that all parties involved in the allegations would be summoned by the committee including Lawan and Femi Otedola.

President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed his sadness over yesterday’s multiple explosions that rocked churches in Kaduna and Zaria.

The President, who was attending a church service at the Aso Villa Chapel, State House, when the report of the multiple attacks reached him, said the incident had made him quite sad.

The incident also cut short the President’s participation in the celebration of this year’s Fathers’ Day, which was marked in all the churches across the country in appreciation of the roles of fathers in the society.

Dr. Jonathan, who had joined a group of men to render special songs, was visibly disturbed when called upon to give his remark.

The President said: “I was particularly thrilled by what was going on in the church, until I got the information that while we are here, there were explosions in Kaduna and since I don’t even know the casualty rate and what is happening, I have been quite sad and I didn’t even want to say something. But when your priest orders you, you must say something.”

The President said he had taken solace in God, who is capable of handling every situation and healing the nation.

He also solicited the support and prayers of Nigerians for peace in the nation and for the success of his administration.

In a message titled “Sovereign fatherhood of God”, the guest speaker, Prof. Jerry Gana, attributed the failure of the society to bad leadership at various homes.

Reading from the book of  Psalm 91, Gana said God is the refuge of the nation and the leaders.

He prayed that God would rescue the nation from its present state of insecurity characterised by suicide bombings and attacks on churches.

The service began at 9am  with the Bible teaching, led by the chaplain of the Chapel, Rev Obioma Onwuzurumba.

The President opened the second segment and the main service with the Bible memory verses taken from James, chapter 1 verses 2 to 4.This was followed by a responsive reading from Psalm 91 taken in sequence by the fathers and mothers in the congregation - in the spirit of the day.

First Lady Dame Patience took the first Bible reading. Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson took the second.

Prayers were offered for peace, security and prosperity of the nation and for divine guidance for the leaders.

In the congregation were former Bayelsa Governor Diepreye Alamiseyegha, Ministers of Police Affairs Caleb Olubolade, his Health and Information counterparts Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu and Labaran Maku.
