Duty: Hampstead School headmaster Jacques Szemalikowski

A London headteacher reported an A-Level student to police and informed the university he had applied for that the teenager had succumbed to 'violent extremism' after he criticised the school in a blog.

Jacques Szemalikowski, the headmaster of Hampstead School, told 19-year-old Kinnan Zaloom never to return to the school grounds again after he set up a website attacking the way it was run.

And he informed the school's on-site policemen and Glasgow University, where Mr Zaloom hoped to take a degree, that the student could be 'developing into an anarchist.

The Hampstead Trash, which Mr Zaloom started in February, contained a series of colourfully-worded articles that likened the school staff to characters in George Orwell's anti-totalitarian novels - most notably casting Mr Szemalikowski in the role of Animal Farm's chief pig, Napoleon.

In a style that he likened to that of the irreverent satirical magazine Private Eye, the young blogger accused the school of failing to push GCSE results any higher, a lack of investment in musical instruments and gym equipment, and of not listening to pupils' views.

Mr Szemalikowski confirmed yesterday that he had blocked the blog from school computers in April and condemned the articles as 'mad writings'.

He said he had 'major concerns and was duty bound under legal acts for the prevention of violent extremism' and that he was 'erring on the side of caution' in taking action.

'It is fairly worrying stuff,' he added.

Mr Szemaliskowski said he was particularly concerned 'that Kinnan has mentioned the ideologies of anarchism and individualism on this blog'.

'I must do something,' he said. 'In the last year he has become more and more enchanted by anti-establishment ways of thinking and has even said that there is an inherent risk that every government is corrupt.

'I am not an expert in these matters but I had training in how to look for things that might need a second opinion. I didn’t think it was illegal but the undertones towards the end made me think - does this need a second opinion?

"The school claims again and again that it listens to students needs and that it takes into consideration what students say and care about. This is utter horses***. So much horses*** indeed, that findus’ lasagne is bewildered"

Article, The Hampstead Trash

'I phoned Glasgow to warn them what sort of person they were dealing with, to advise them that this person thinks thoughts like these, and they could then make an informed decision.

'I am duty bound to do that.'

The headteacher added: 'I also reported what he had written to the police, and the officer I spoke to said he would pass these mad writings of his on to a colleague.'

Neither Mr Szemalikowski nor Mr Zaloom has since heard from police.

The north-west London school caters for around 1,300 pupils, with former students including novelist Zadie Smith, women’s England international footballer Rachel Yankey and actress Sadie Frost.

The blog is now being updated by another, anonymous student as Mr Zaloom has left the school.

In his final post on the blog, Mr Zaloom wrote: 'This past year, I have become more and more enchanted by the ideology of anarchism and individualism.'

He added: 'I am not hailing anarchism as the only way of life, just pointing out that any type of government has the risk of being corrupt and vile.'

Mr Zaloom said he had been summoned to the headteacher’s office on his last day and interrogated about his articles, before he was warned never return to the school site - even to pick up his A-level exam results - because the work was 'offensive'.

One article that caused particular trouble commented that the school was 'playing the school league tables' in terms of how results were presented.

It claimed there were tensions among staff members about the way the school was run, outlined in phrases such as: 'So f*** you school management, f*** you.'

Another article read: 'The school claims again and again that it listens to students needs and that it takes into consideration what students say and care about. This is utter horses***. So much horses*** indeed, that findus’ lasagne is bewildered' - referring to the scandal earlier last year, when ready meals were found to contain horse meat.

The article went on: 'The school magazine is not worth the paper it is printed on and does s*** all to voice student consensus.'

Mr Zaloom, who did not get the grades he needed to get into Glasgow and will be studying mathematics at Portsmouth University, said: 'They said I had brought the school into disrepute. I said that was their opinion, but nothing I had done was illegal so why such severe action?

'I was prepared to apologise for the language. But what worries me is if I had been a year younger they said they would have expelled me halfway through my A-levels, and that means they would have been prepared to ruin my education because they didn’t like my thoughts.

'It was useless to call the police because I didn’t break the law.

'I was concerned he’d called Glasgow because I’m worried he would go to those lengths of intimidation to control a student’s thoughts. But I wasn’t too panicked because it turned out I didn’t have the grades to get in there anyway.'

"I phoned Glasgow to warn them what sort of person they were dealing with, to advise them that this person thinks thoughts like these, and they could then make an informed decision. I am duty bound to do that."

Jacques Szemalikowski, Hampstead School headmaster

Mr Zaloom, who co-founded a debating society at the school, compared his treatment to those fighting for press freedom in the Middle East.

He said: 'Obviously it’s not on the same scale at all, this injustice is small, I know that. But my family are from Jordan so I know how things work there, and newspapers are not allowed to write what they want.

'Everybody is controlled, and I can see that happening here. It reminds me of Ingsoc
[a totalitarian government in the Orwell novel Nineteen Eighty-Four], people must conform or they are out.

'When he blocked the blog from the school’s computers that was bizarre. How does he find the time to go round doing things like that?'

Mr Szemalikowski defended his actions, saying: 'He posted lies about the school and I will not tolerate that.

'His posts were scattered with the f-word and c-word and if a student spoke like that in school they would be expelled. So of course I blocked the blog, and told him never to come back.

'He’s right, if he had been younger, he would have been expelled.

'It would have been his responsibility that he ruined his education, not mine.'

He added that if Mr Zaloom had not used bad language he would still have warranted an expulsion 'for his mad ideas and ranting'.

Mr Zaloom said he wanted to thank 'a lot of the very good teachers at Hampstead School' but felt they were not given the chance to 'teach the way they want to'.

Danger: Smoothies and juices contain deceptively high amounts of sugar

Smoothies and fruit juices have been branded the 'new danger' in the battle against obesity.

The two scientists who blew the lid on the corn syrup in soft drinks scandal described claims that smoothies are good for us as 'deceiving', arguing they contain the same amount of sugar as a large coke.

And Barry Popkin and George Bray say that while smoothies are lauded for containing the equivalent of six oranges, they actually provide none of the health benefits received by simply eating an orange instead.

In an interview with The Guardian, Popkin said: 'Smoothies and fruit juices are the new danger.

'It's kind of the next step in the evolution of the battle.

'And it's a really big part of it because in every country they've been replacing soft drinks with fruit juice and smoothies as the new healthy beverage.'

Popkin, a professor at the department of nutrition at the University of North Carolina, added that in recent years soft drinks firms such as Coca Cola and Pepsi had been buying up juice and smoothie rivals around the world.

In the UK, Coca Cola owns Innocent and Pepsi, Tropicana.

He explained that Pepsi in particular had marketed a 250ml portion of its smoothies as providing two of the nation's five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Prof Popkin is pushing for the five-a-day advice to change as drinking a smoothie does not affect our overall food intake, whereas eating just one orange does.

He added: 'So pulped up smoothies do nothing good for us, but do give us the same amount of sugar as four to six oranges or a large coke. It is deceiving.'

In 2004 Popkin and Bray exposed the dangers posed by soft drinks, which contained high levels of fructose added to soft drinks in the form of corn syrup.

They identified these types of sugar-sweetened drinks, which are loaded with calories and consumed between meals, as a major reason for soaring obesity levels in developed countries.
Fructose: Naturally occurring sugars in fruit juices and smoothies are continuing to fuel the obesity crisis

But as people have changed their drinking habits to avoid fizzy drinks, the damage caused from naturally occurring fructose in juices and smoothies is continuing to fuel the problem.

They say all sugars are equally bad in the effect they can have on our health.

China has created a huge supply of apple juice concentrate, which they claim is the cheapest sweetener on the market and is being used to get around the sugar quotas that many countries now have.
Tax: Campaigners say 20p on a litre of soft drink would raise £1billion, which could be spent on children's health

Tax: Campaigners say 20p on a litre of soft drink would raise £1billion

In 2012 Popkin published data that identified fruit juice concentrate as being the second most common sweetener in soft drinks and babies formula milk, after corn syrup.

Last week, in a report by the British Medical Association, found those who drank fruit juice were more at risk of developing the obesity related type two diabetes than those who ate whole fruit.

According to the British Soft Drinks Association, the consumption of soft drinks containing added sugar has fallen by nine per cent in the last 10 years, while the incidence of obesity has increased by 15 per cent.

It said: 'Obesity is a serious and complex problem requiring concerted action by a wide range of organisations as well as by people themselves.

'Soft drinks companies recognise the role they have to play.'

Health campaigners have made calls for the introduction of a soft drinks tax.

Sustain claimed by placing a 20p tax on a litre of soft drink, it would raise £1billion, which could be ring-fenced and invested in children's health initiatives.

Director of the British Heart Foundation research group at Oxford University, Mike Rayner, believes introducing the tax would reduce consumption of soft drinks.

Speaking to The Guardian, he said: 'The problem with sugar is its calories really and it's easily digestible.

'And it tends not to come with anything particularly useful, so sugary drinks are problematic because they are an easy way of getting calories - not because it's sugar, but because it's calories.'

In a statement, Innocent defended its products, claiming people with juice drinks in their diet tended to have lower rates of obesity than others.

The company added: 'Smoothies are made entirely from fruit and therefore contain the same amount of sugars that you would find in an equivalent amount of whole fruit.'

-- As one woman in glittering Lycra gently bends her legs backwards over her head, another balances on top, slowly twisting her own limbs into a human pretzel.

They move as one -- a fantastical insect bewitching the Las Vegas crowds in Cirque Du Soleil's legendary stage show, called simply "O."

But despite their ethereal demeanor, each petite performer possesses a rare Herculean strength and snake-like flexibility. And almost all hail from one country: Mongolia.

"When you want a top baseball player, sometimes you look in America. Where we need a contortionist we look to Mongolia," said the show's artistic director, Sandi Croft.watch the video

"When they dance they have a natural flexibility, even in their folk dance. It is just part of their culture to have this extra bend in delivery with their movement."

Why Mongolia?

The bright lights of Las Vegas are a long way from the plains of Mongolia, a sparsely populated country bordering China and Russia.

But in the last 70 years, Mongolia has become a breeding ground for the world's top contortionists, who have performed everywhere from Russia's Bolshoi Theater to the Monte Carlo International Circus Festival.

Indeed, while other well-meaning parents around the world might send their little girls to ballet or piano lessons, in Mongolia they're more likely to drop them off at contortion school.

Watch: The art of contortion

While Mongolian contortion has some similarities to ancient folk dances and yoga poses, it was the launch of the State Circus in the 1940s that saw it really take off as a professional art form.

When the contortion school's first official trainer, the now legendary Tsend-Ayush, began performing across the country, she quickly inspired a generation of girls hoping to quite literally mold themselves in her likeness.
By eight years old I could do most of the technical moves -- I was considered a professional.
Nomintuya Baasankhuu, former contortionist

One of those children was then-eight-year-old Angelique Janov, now the trainer for Cirque du Soleil's "O."

"We'd never seen anything like Tsend-Ayush before," she said. "It was her combination of strong technical skills and the beautiful way she moved to the music -- she made it look so easy.

"After that, every little girl wanted to be a contortionist."

Child's play

Of course, training to be a contortionist is far from easy. Students as young as five train for around three hours a day, five days a week. They build up their strength, flexibility and balance through various exercises such as handstands, splits, and push-ups.

"My homework was 300 push-ups a day," said 29-year-old Nomintuya Baasankhuu, former contortionist and Arts Program director at the Arts Council of Mongolia.

"It was intense. But by eight years old I could do most of the technical moves -- I was considered a professional."

There are some risks -- Baasankhuu suffered a knee injury after falling from a human tower three meters high. But many contortionists insist that much like any sport, it is safe if done properly.

"Contortion is not dangerous," said 63-year-old Cirque du Soleil trainer Janov. "It's like yoga -- if you're stretching every day you stay young."

Naturally gifted?

Such rigorous training regimes have been a huge factor in the Mongolians' success around the world. But how much of a role does genetics play?

"Some people are naturally more flexible and this is often due to genetics -- if one of our parents is flexible, we're more likely to be flexible too," said Tim Allardyce of the British Osteopathic Association.

"That said, a naturally flexible person would not be able to get themselves into positions that contortionists can without extensive training -- it is only very gradually, over many months and years, that the ligaments and muscles lengthen, allowing the joints to become more mobile."

World of opportunity

For many youngsters in Mongolia, contortion is seen as more than simply a hobby -- it's a golden ticket to the world.

"Mongolian contortion is globally competitive -- today many performers work for Cirque du Soleil and other international circus companies," said Baasankhuu, who also researched the history of Mongolian contortion at the National University of Mongolia.

"That is why so many girls would like to become contortionists and travel around world and make living from it."

So what is it about these mysterious performers that continues to beguile audiences across the world?

Janov perhaps summed up their allure best: "It's the realization that an individual can do things that seem impossible."

The issue of Russian gay rights draws protesters this week at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in Madrid.
President Barack Obama is set to meet with leaders of several Russian social activist groups Friday, an event likely to touch on the sensitive subject of gay rights in the nation amid tensions over Syria.

Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law passed by parliament that bans the public discussion of gay rights and relationships where children might hear it. Violators can be fined and, if they are foreigners, deported.

Obama, who has advocated gay rights and same-sex marriage, has said that "nobody's more offended than me" by the Russian law.

Critics say the Russian law is so vague that anyone can be prosecuted for wearing a rainbow T-shirt or holding hands in public with someone of the same sex.

At the event Friday in Russia, Obama is due to meet with representatives of groups that support a range of causes, including media freedom, protection of the environment and lesbian, gay, bisegxwal and transgender rights.

The controversy over the law is one of several disputes between the United States and Russia, including the question of possible military action against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Moscow's decision to shelter National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden.

Obama and Putin met briefly Thursday at the Group of 20 summit meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia, shaking hands and exchanging a few words. Officials said the two leaders could have a longer meeting on the margins of the event.

Obama had previously canceled a summit meeting with Putin scheduled around the G20 event after Russia gave temporary asylum to Snowden, whom the United States wants to prosecute for leaking documents about NSA surveillance programs.

Video footage has emerged which shows the moment seven of President Bashar al-Assad's Syrian soldiers are executed on camera by rebels fighting to overthrow the regime.

The soldiers are stripped, bound and pushed to the ground where a number of rebels stand over them pointing guns at their bodies. Some bear vicious injuries on their backs and arms.

Just before they are killed, the ring-leader Abdul Samad Issa - known as 'The Uncle', recites a poem before he fires the first bullet.

SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO

Horrific: The soldiers are stripped, bound and pushed to the ground where a number of rebels stand over them pointing guns at their bodies before they are shot

'For fifty years, they are companions to corruption', he says. 'We swear to the Lord of the Throne, that this is our oath: We will take revenge.'

The horrific scene filmed in April 2012 was documented in a video smuggled out of Syria only a few days ago by a former rebel who says he had become horrified by the brutality of the tactics his one-time comrades are using. He gave the footage to The New York Times.

It has emerged as G20 leaders meet in Russia to debate the dire situation in the war-torn country and will add fuel to the view that the rest of the world cannot actively support rebels who are carrying out atrocities equally as brutal as the troops deployed by President Assad.

His former aide, who had the copy of the footage, said the captured soldiers' allegedly had videos of them molesting Syrian civilians and looting which led to the execution.

Issa requested the execution be filmed so he could show it to donors to help secure more funding.

At the end of the footage, the bodies of the soldiers are dumped in a well while one of the gunmen

looks into the camera and smiles.

Brutal: The bodies of the soldiers are dumped in a well after they are shot dead by the rebels

It is believed Issa has the support of around 300 fighters willing to carry out the executions of

captured soldiers.

The 37-year-old, a trader and livestock herder before the war, formed the group at the start of the uprising using his own money to buy weapons and pay for his own soldiers' expenses.

His father was opposed to President Hafez al-Assad, the father of Syria’s current president, but in 1982, he disappeared.

Issa believes he was killed during a 27-day government crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood which sparked his hatred of the government.

The video has emerged as G20 leaders meet in Russia to debate the situation in Syria

Last year, it is believed he was running a training camp in Turkey and gathering weapons, according to the New York Times.

The footage will no doubt cause problems for the U.S. which is considering attacking Syrian forces

over its alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians.

Yesterday, Secretary of State John Kerry spoke of the issue of radicalised rebels which he said made up 15 to 20 per cent of the opposition.

Most of the concerns are centred around two groups which are known to have ties with Al Qaeda -

the Nusra Front and the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Earlier this year, another sickening video showed a rebel leader eating the heart of a captured soldier.

The clip seems to show a man, believed to be the well-known founder of Homs' Farouq Brigade Abu Sakkar, standing over the uniformed corpse in a ditch while ranting against President Bashar al Assad.

Using a knife, the man hacked open the torso and removed two organs before holding them up to the camera and declaring: 'I swear to God we will eat your hearts and your livers, you soldiers of Bashar the dog.'

He then raised one to his mouth and took a bite.

All the locks have had to be changed at four prisons after guards lost the keys, ministers have admitted.

The taxpayer picked up the £300,000 bill to prevent mass escapes in the last three years.

It can also be revealed that since the coalition was formed prison officers have lost almost 140 sets of keys, used to unlock everything from prison gates to handcuffs used to restrain the most dangerous criminals.

Justice Secretary Chris Grayling has unveiled plans to shut five jails, including the historic Dartmoor Prison in Devon.

He argued it was time to replace old, crumbling prisons with modern super-jails housing thousands of inmates.

But the Ministry of Justice this week admitted to the security blunders which meant four of the country’s biggest jails had to be ’relocked’ since 2010.

The taxpayer paid out £79,525 to change the locks at the category B Swaleside jail on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent.
Ridiculous: Labour's Sadiq Khan criticised the errors which saw dozens of sets of keys lost

A further £173,608 was spent on new locks for the Glen Parva young offenders institution in Leicestershire and £84,418 on the Warren Hill young offenders institution in Suffolk.

All the locks in the 1,450 capacity HMP Birmingham were also replaced at a cost of £415,276, although the bill was picked up by private firm G4S which runs the category B jail.

Ministers are at pains to stress that ‘there were no escapes at any of the prisons’ as a result of the security error.

‘Following these incidents vigilance at the prisons was increased regarding key security and events that may lead to a prison needing to be relocked,’ said prisons minister Jeremy Wright.

However Labour said it was ‘ridiculous’ that so much money had been spent because prison staff had misplaced their keys.

Labour’s shadow justice secretary Sadiq Khan said: ’I’ve heard of locking up prisoners and throwing away the keys, but losing the keys is ridiculous.

’This is breathtaking incompetence of the highest order and is money the taxpayer can ill afford to waste.’

Ministers have also admitted that in the first two years of the coalition there were 136 cases of loss of keys reported by prisons.

It included officers and guard losing or misplacing keys to prison gates, cells, handcuffs and escort chains.
Bill: Private contractor G4S had to spend more than £400,000 changing all of the locks at the 1,450 capacity prison in Birmingham

Andrew Neilson, Director of Campaigns at the Howard League for Penal Reform, said: ‘With budgets dwindling year on year, the Prison Service can ill–afford spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on changing the locks in our jails.

‘Prisons are overcrowded, the staff who work there are overstretched, and this is money that could be better spent on alternatives to custody, such as community sentences.’

A Prison Service spokesperson said: ‘Incidents like this are extremely rare. We always investigate them thoroughly and update our security measures accordingly.’

Katie Webb was found hanged in her bedroom on April 24 this year

A 12-year-old girl was found hanged in her bedroom after she had argued with her mother about being untidy, an inquest has heard.

Katie Webb was found unconscious in her bedroom on April 24, this year.

Her devastated father Daniel, 34, told an inquest he had a row with Katie two days before she died but put her mood 'down to hormones'.

Her mother Anne, 32, also told the hearing she had 'argued' with Katie on the day of her death about her messy bedroom at the family home in Evesham, Worcestershire.

Speaking at the hearing at Stourport Coroner’s Court on Monday, Mr Webb said: 'It was mine and Katie’s very first spat. I put it down to hormones.'

Two days later he heard a loud scream from his wife Anne who had discovered their daughter hanged in her bedroom.

Mr Webb rushed to the room where he tried to give his daughter CPR before paramedics arrived.

He told the inquest: 'I went straight to where the screaming was coming from to see Anne holding Katie and screaming "help me, help me, help me".

'Then this really nice man pulled me out of the way and said "You’ve done enough, let someone who knows what they’re doing try". I just broke down.'

Katie was airlifted to Birmingham Children’s Hospital but could not be saved.

The inquest heard Worcestershire County Council’s social services division had placed Katie under a Child Protection Plan in 2010 following concerns around neglect.

This was downgraded to a Child in Need Plan in May 2012 after the family made good progress and was even removed entirely in September that year.

But the plan was reactivated in March this year after social workers found a diary Katie has been asked to complete which contained an entry saying: 'If I don’t do my chores I will get a whack.'

Her parents denied it was true and Katie later told a social services worker it had never happened.
Katie had been a pupil at Simon de Montfort School, Evesham. Geraint William, the Senior Coroner for Worcestershire, concluded there was no evidence Katie had been bullied either at school or online

The inquest heard Worcestershire County Council’s social services division closed their case on Katie on April 23 - just one day before she died.

Geraint William, the Senior Coroner for Worcestershire, concluded there was no evidence Katie had been bullied either at school or online.

He recorded an open verdict saying he didn’t feel he had enough evidence to confidently record a verdict of suicide or accidental death.

Addressing Katie’s parents, Mr Williams said: 'There’s absolutely nothing I can say that makes this look better.

'This will never, ever go away for you but it will get easier to live with and frankly that’s all you can hope for.'

Tragedy: George Verrier died after refusing treatment for his injuries

A teenager has died from head injuries after refusing hospital treatment following a fight involving about 20 people at a 16th birthday party.

George Verrier, 17, was given first aid by police after 'mayhem' broke out at around 12.45am yesterday in Bromley, south-east London.

The teenager was among 100 guests at the party of friend Madison Moran.

The 16-year-old is a student at the Brit School for performing arts in Croydon, whose former pupils include singers Adele, Jessie J and Amy Winehouse.

After the party George was involved in a fight involving more than a dozen others.

Police say he was offered first aid at the scene for a head injury and was advised to go to hospital but he declined.

He was found unconscious at a friend's house later on Sunday morning. He was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on Sunday evening.

One person who witnessed the fracas in the street said: 'It was very wild. There were lots of people fighting each other and then lots of police turned up.

'There was a lot of shouting and screaming and it seemed some of them were drunk.'

'It looked like a very well-organised party - it was noisy, that's all. The family who had the party are such a nice family.'

Another neighbour said some partygoers had been turned away from the house.

He said: 'We were very much aware of the noise. That stopped at about 12.30am when the music stopped. My wife was looking out of the window and she could see three large adults leading a group of youngsters up the road, turning them away from the party.'

Another 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the teenager's death and is in custody at a police station in south London.

Detective Chief Inspector Diane Tudway said: 'Police were called to a disturbance at Southborough Road and the junction with Blenheim Road, Bromley, about 12.45am on Sunday September 1.

'If you were driving along that road you may have driven past that disturbance involving approximately 20 people. A young man was assaulted and he later died of his injuries.'

George's grieving family was said to be 'distraught' at what happened.

Armed policemen fighting on duty: a man charged for taking photograph

The Nigerian Police in Lagos on Monday charged Abraham Oshoko, 33, before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly taking “offensive“ photographs.

Oshoko, who lives in Idimu, a suburb of Lagos, was accused to have unlawfully taken the photographs of policemen and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officials who were performing their ‘legal’ duties.

According to the prosecutor, ASP. Barth Nwaokenye, the accused is facing a two-count charge of taking unlawful picture and causing a breach of the peace.

Nwaokenye said that Oshoko had on 31 August, at Dopemu Round About, Agege, took an offensive photograph of the officers who were performing their lawful duties.

He said the photographs, which were taken without lawful authorisation, were aimed at tarnishing the image of both organisations.

The prosecutor said that Oshoko also conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.

Nwaokenye said that the offences contravened Sections 57 (4) and 166 (d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the offence is punishable with a N90, 000 fines or six months imprisonment.

Oshoko pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Eniola Fabamwo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N25, 000 and adjourned further hearing till 16 October.

In recent times, Nigerians have been secretly recording on video, policemen taking bribes, in the discharge of their duties.

53  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Patricia Etteh Former speaker of the house goes to school @ the prestigious Buck on: 1-09-2013 09:38 PM
Do you guys remember Patricia Etteh, the first female speaker of the Nigerian house of reps?!
Well,  following her unceremonious exit from the house of reps,  she's been keeping a low profile.
PUNCH reports that she is now a student at the prestigious Buckingham University, United Kingdom - she is studying law.
Incidentally, one of her course mates is the son of the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Nuhu Ribadu.
She is said to live in a posh apartment in Milton Keynes from where she commutes to and fro campus.
Etteh had barely spent four months as the then fourth most powerful individual in the country when she was forced to step down from her leadership position of the House following a heated scandal over the renovation of her official residence in October 2007, in which some of her colleagues accused her of alleged involvement in corrupt practice.

Scientists have discovered that apart from pollinating crops, producing honey, beeswax , propolis, pollen and royal jelly, Bees could also be the solution to the highly dreaded HIV and cancer.

A team of scientists at the Washington University School of Medicine in the US, used nanoparticles carrying a toxin found in Bee venom to destroy HIV without harming nearby body cells, successfully.

According to Agency Report, the findings were contained in the current issue of Antiviral Therapy.

Explaining the modus operandi, Dr. Samuel A. Wickline, one of the researchers said; “Bee Venom contains a potent toxin called melittin that can poke holes in the protective envelope that surrounds HIV and other viruses. It has even shown melittin-loaded nanoparticles to be effective in killing tumor cells.”

Speaking with Vanguard in Ibadan recently, Mr. Ayodele Salako, a Beekeeper, corroborated the assertion of the researchers. “The Bee sting is very medicinal. A bee keeper who is stung by a bee every now and then, will not complain of any ailment because the bees have taken those things away from you by enhancing your immunity. That is one of the best works of bee venom.”

He demonstrated this by administering bee venom therapy on some people with pains in various parts of the body like the waist, hands and knees. All recipients said the pains stopped after a few minutes.

“Because the bee venom toxin has been engineered not to attack healthy cells, a honeypotl gel loaded with bee venom particles, could be ideal for couples where one partner has HIV and they want to have a baby,” the report said, adding; “It’s also theoretically possible that intravenous injections of the nanoparticles would be able to clear HIV from the blood stream, a virtual miracle for those who have tested positive.”

55  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Fired Paraguayan bus drivers crucify themselves in protest on: 1-09-2013 08:50 PM
Eight bus drivers crucify themselves after getting fired in the city of Luque, Paraguay.
Eight bus drivers crucify themselves after getting fired in the city of Luque, Paraguay.

They're lying on top of wooden crosses arranged flat on the ground.

Passers-by who approach them to get a closer look cringe when they see their hands. The protesters have driven nails into the flesh of their palms between their middle and index fingers, nails that then go straight into planks of wood.

The protesters are eight bus drivers who were fired from their jobs two months ago.

They protested in mid-July outside the offices of the Vanguardia bus company, their former employer. But after concluding they weren't getting anywhere by doing that, they "crucified" themselves more than two weeks ago across the street from Vanguardia's headquarters in the Paraguayan city of Luque, located 12 kilometers (about seven and a half miles) northeast of Asunción, the Paraguayan capital.

Damián Espinola, communications director with the Luque municipal government, has been part of a group of local authorities who have tried to mediate between the company and the crucified bus drivers.

"It's hard to believe, but it's true," Espinola said. "All eight bus drivers have been crucified for 17 days. They're also on hunger strike and some of them are in critical condition. They only drink water. They don't consume any solid food. Their hands are perforated."

Juan Villalba is one of the crucified bus drivers. Villalba is the secretary of the Paraguayan Federation of Transportation Workers. He told Paraguayan media that his group is willing to take the protest "to the very end," regardless of the consequences. His wife, María Concepción Candia, also nailed herself to a wooden cross Wednesday to show support.

But the company says it has done everything in its power to try to find a solution to the labor conflict. Aufredi Paredes, general manager of Vanguardia, told CNN that the company has even offered to rehire five of the bus drivers.

"We have done a little bit of everything to find a solution, including calling on the human rights commissions from the (Paraguayan) Senate and the Lower House. We have also met with the workers several times, but their leadership has been inflexible. We have followed labor regulations and will continue to abide by the law," Paredes said.

The protest by the eight is part of a larger labor action by some drivers for Vanguardia, a bus company with 150 employees that has been offering service in Luque and the capital for 45 years. There are currently a total of 50 bus drivers on strike, but the service has continued uninterrupted, Paredes said.

"The striking workers and some leftists who have gotten involved have attacked us and our vehicles, breaking windshields, tossing fireworks at us as well. We have also received death threats during meetings and afterward," Paredes said.

The workers have also caught the attention of national authorities. Cynthia González, vice minister of Labor and Social Security, visited them on August 23 in an effort to open a dialogue between the company and the bus drivers to find a solution.

"Both parties have to give up something in order to advance in the negotiations. In the meantime, we will continue to work by acting as mediators so that we can help the parties reach an agreement," González said. The workers went on strike July 23, according to the ministry.

There have been several meetings between representatives of the bus drivers, the company and mediators to no avail. Miguel Angel Gill, a councilman and medical doctor, is closely monitoring the health of the protesters. Every morning, local people gather around the crucified bus drivers to get an update on their condition.

A picture taken this week by Bernardo Agustti, a photographer for the Paraguayan daily Diario ABC Color, shows all the workers covered with a banner bearing the colors of the Paraguayan flag. All the workers are wearing medical masks. The crosses are lined up so that all of them face in the same direction.

In between two of them, lies a wooden coffin raised at a 45-degree angle; a coffin, they say, that will become their final resting place if the company doesn't meet their demands.

The family members of 13-year old Nigerian stowaway boy, who flew from Benin to Lagos inside the wheel compartment of an aircraft, has appealed for his release from custody.

Daniel Oikhena, a Junior Secondary School (JSS) II student attracted attention when he `flew’ on Arik aircraft on Saturday Aug. 24.

Miss Sonia Oikhena, elder sister of the stowaway boy, made the appeal at a news conference in Benin on Saturday.

Sonia said family members were worried that Daniel was still in detention eight days after the dramatic event.
The stowaway boy

The stowaway boy

She urged the Federal Government to order the security agencies to release the youngster to his family.

She expressed concern that there had been no contact with the family by those holding Daniel.

“The only contact the family had with the security agents was when the SSS in Benin invited their mother for questioning.’’

This, she stressed, had placed the family in a difficult situation over the issue.

“There has been no word from the security agencies as to where the boy was being detained or his state of health.

“We are worried and do not know where my brother is and his present health condition after flying in such a risky position.

“My brother should not be held culpable over the security lapses at the airport.

“If there had been tight security at the airport, he wouldn’t have succeeded in taking that risk of flying through the wheel of an aircraft.”

On his part, Desmond, (9), the immediate younger brother, appealed for his brother’s release “because he acted out of ignorance.’’

Desmond said he was not however surprised when the news came to them last Sunday that Daniel was in Lagos.

Desmond said his brother got the idea of hiding inside the wheel of an aircraft from foreign movies he often watched.

“Daniel has been telling us about plans to travel to America by hiding inside the wheel compartment of an aircraft.

“We slept in the same room the night before the incident and we were surprised when he woke up so early.

“He packed his school bag, removed the books and replaced them with some of his clothes and hung his rosary on his neck.

“He quietly walked out without anybody knowing his destination. When my mother started looking for him, I told her to go to the airport to search for him based on what he has been telling us.

“I want my brother released to us. We are missing him and want him back home. My family is not happy over the continued detention of our brother.

“He is just a child and must have acted out of ignorance; he needs brotherly love and guidance.

“We are appealing to those responsible for his detention to please consider us because we have no money to fight any case”, the Desmond pleaded.

woman in eastern China murdered her husband and boiled the corpse to cover her tracks after he abused her and her daughter, a report said Saturday.

The woman drugged the man, her second husband, and tortured him for three days in June by withholding food and water and beating him, causing his death, said a report on government-backed news portal Anhui News.

She then dismembered the corpse with a saw and boiled the parts in a pressure cooker to hide the evidence, the report said. It did not detail how she disposed of the cooked flesh afterwards.

The psychological burden of the crime proved too much for her to bear, causing her to lose 14 pounds (6.3 kilograms) and turn herself into police, according to the report.

A police officer in Anhui province’s Lu’an City, where the incident occurred, confirmed the case to AFP but declined to give further details.

Mr Rotimi said: 'I just happened to walk by and I saw him doing his thing.

'You know the second doors? He was actually peeing in the corner with his back facing towards me, through the little gap between the doors and the bus.
'When I saw him I was kind of shocked to be honest, then I quickly got my phone and started filming it.
