| An Abuja man has been arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Wuse Zone 2 following allegations that he stole from his fiancee and then set her house on fire. Matthew Okeke, 42, of Ministers’ Hill, Maitama, appeared before the court on on a three-count charge bordering on mischief, wrongful restraint and theft. The police prosecutor, Corporal Paul Anigbo, reportedly told the court that Blessing Daniel of Tudun-Wada Village, Lugbe, Abuja, reported the matter at the Lugbe Police Station on September 12. Anigbo said the accused entered Daniel’s house and stole her clothes and some pairs of shoes worth N150,000, locked her inside the room with a padlock and set it on fire. The prosecutor said that during investigation, the stolen clothes were recovered from the accused. He said that the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 337, 256, and 287 of the Penal Code, but the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Magistrate, Grace Adebayo, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N400,000 with a surety in like sum. Adebayo ordered that the surety must be a lawyer with not less than two years post-call to bar. | A 13-year-old girl has made some shocking confessions on how her biological father, Stephen Chimaraobi, and his friend, Paul Oha, raped her for seven years in their Ojodu home in Lagos State. The police at Grammar School Division, Ojodu, conducted immediate arrest upon hearing this story. 42-year-old Chimaraobi, from Delta State, has remained single after his wife left him. His friend Oha, from Imo State, is married and has two kids. The girl narrated that the she was defiled at the age of six years and regular molesting continued till she became 13, without each of them knowing until she reported the matter to the police. She said she did not know the damage they were doing to her until recently, as she became an emotional wreck. The victim further narrated that her father did not re-marry after the girl’s mother left him and he took advantage of her mother’s absence to rape the child repeatedly. The little girl said she was helpless because her father threatened to kill her, if the girl made this fact public. She also adder her father’s friend Oha was also engaged in frequent segxwal assaults. He used to come to their house at odd time, when her father had gone to work. She said after that, he would warn her not to tell anyone about it, including her father. “My father’s friend after abusing me, will ask me not to tell my father, not knowing that my father was also abusing me,” she told the police. The victim decided to risk and went to the police to report the matter when the trauma became unbearable. Chimaraobi’s neighbours confirmed the incident and condemned his arrest, adding the police should ensure that the victim get justice. The father and his friend were charged with defilement and rape at the Family Court in Ikeja, on September 18, 2013, Wednesday. | My Husband Uses My Menstrual Pads For Ritual – Wife Cries Out 18 September, 2013 Local A housewife, Mrs Iyabo Odewunmi, has told an Osogbo Customary Court in Osun State to dissolve her 10-year-old marriage to her husband, Ojo, over his habit of using her menstrual pads for ritual purposes. Iyabo, while complaining that her husband was a threat to her life and that of her children, said “I noticed that my menstrual pads had been missing as well as my bras and pants. When I complained to my husband, he said nothing. He later promised to buy me new pants and bras.” She accused her husband of being diabolical, adding, “my husband has been behaving in a mysterious way in the last few months and I see this as a threat to my life and that of my children.” In his response, Ojo informed the court that his wife lied against him because she was looking for flimsy excuses to abandon the marriage. | The spate of kidnapping in Nigeria and the involvement of youths in the criminal act have become a source of grave concern. More worrisome is the fact that abduction is fast becoming more than a trend; it is now an industry thriving on funds received from the families of victims. The latest of their victim is popular human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, Mr. Mike Ozekhome who was abducted on August 23, along the Benin –Auchi express way after a shootout which left four police men dead. Following weeks of negotiations for ransom, Ozekhome was finally released. Strangely Mr. Dominic Ezerioha, a lawyer in Mike Ozekhome’s Chambers was also abducted on September 6, while trying to negotiate the freedom of his boss. Mr. Ezerioha and Mr. Ozekhome’s son, Ilugbekai, also a lawyer, were both saddled with the responsibility of delivering the ransom to the kidnappers. Mr. Ezerioha recounted his ordeal in a chat with Vanguard Metro, VM. His words: “The situation was very tense; the kidnappers kept calling me. We tried to negotiate with them and after such negotiations I will call my contacts who gave me tips on how to negotiate with them. They (kidnappers) were convinced that I’m close to Mr. Ozekhome and that I should bring the money. Unfortunately, when we got there, I was kidnapped because they believed that they could get some money by so doing”. Describing his trauma, Ezerioha narrated thus: “I died seven times and I woke up. We drove in a Jeep with the ransom to the place where they directed us to. When we got there, they promptly kidnapped us and took away the vehicle we came with. They drove us, blindfolded, for about two and half hours until we arrived at the destination, a building located right inside a thick forest. That was where we were kept”. Mr. Ezerioha who spoke at Mike Ozekhome’s house at Igando in the Ikotun area of Lagos state, told VM that he was yet to see members of his family. “I am on my way to the airport now to see my family. When I get to the airport, I will go to Abuja to see them.” The visibly elated lawyer gave glory to God for making their release possible. “The atmosphere since our release has been very nice. My stay with the kidnappers was a very strong omen. We give God the glory,” he said. Asked to explain his relationship with Mr. Ozekhome he declared: “Chief Mike Ozekhome is my mentor, my boss and my father. He is a man of the people; he is a man who touches the lives of people. Even while the abductors were holding him, he touched their lives. He told them the right things to do as human beings. He is solidly a nice man”. He threw more light on the negotiation process but could not state categorically confirm the amount paid as ransom. “When we were there, a lot of negotiations were going on. As I am talking to you now, I don’t know what happened but I know that ransom was asked and ransom was paid. | A research hospital in China caused outrage when they requested for female virgin blood. According to report, Peking University Cancer Hospital in China put out a request for ages 18 to 24. "Male virgins are not needed, just females, how is this science?" posted one highly-cited user of a Chinese social media service similar to Twitter. The Hospital spokeswoman Guan Jiuping insisted that there is nothing sinister in their need for the blood. She claimed that researchers were doing studies on the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is usually transmitted through segxwal contact. Guan says: "It's in line with international practice to collect female virgins' blood samples, which serve as negative control substances in HPV research, given that the risk of contracting HPV is low among women who have never had sex. Too much attention to sensitive words like 'virgin' and 'sex' is not necessary in this context. " Researchers said virgin blood is helpful because risk for the virus is low among women who have not had sex. So far, 50 self-proclaimed virgins have donated their blood to science, it was reported. | The Federal Government may have reopened dialogue with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), in a bid to end the over two months old strike. This came just as the National Association of Nigerians Students (NANS) urged both government and ASUU to return back to the negotiation table, with each party willing to shift ground from their previous positions. Indications to the new development with ASUU emerged on Monday, when journalists were called to cover the meeting, which was eventually postponed till next week, with a ministry official saying this was to allow the supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike, get proper briefing on the current standpoint of the issues involved. Wike was joined by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, for the meeting scheduled for 12 noon at the Federal Ministry of Education conference room before it was called off. Nigerian Tribune gathered that the resumption of talks followed the exit of the former Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, who was dropped last week by President Goodluck Jonathan alongside eight other ministers. The negotiation between the government and leadership of ASUU broke down over disagreement on payment of academic earned allowance to union members. Meanwhile, the Nigerian students, under the auspices of NANS, have called on both the Federal Government and ASUU to return back to the negotiation table, in order to resolve their differences in good faith. Acting Senate president of NANS, John Shima, while addressing newsmen in Abuja, lauded the sack of Professor Rufa’i and other ministers, as part of the initiatives of President Jonathan to retool the government. “ASUU and Federal Government should go back to the negotiating table. Even after wars, issues are resolved at the roundtable. Nigerian students have been idle for 78 days. “Nigerian students are tired of sitting at home. Both parties are urged to shift ground to ensure quick resolution of the crisis. “We lost almost three years of study time in the last 10 years due to strikes; the lost time being enough to graduate a student in Germany,” Shima said. Meanwhile, Benue State governor, Mr Gabriel Suswam, has vowed to get tough on striking lecturers of Benue State University, Makurdi, by evoking “no work, no pay” policy if they refuse to call off what he described as their “sympathy strike,” which had paralysed academic activities in the state. Suswam said state-owned universities like that of Benue had no reason whatsoever to remain on strike, since it was federal universities and not states that were earlier involved in the negotiation with the Federal Government.
