1  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / 27-year-old maid impregnated by boss’s 13-year-old son on: 19-04-2014 06:51 AM

A Zimbabwean maid from Mbizo in Kwekwe, Letwin Magogo (27), on Monday admitted to bedding her boss’ 13-year-old son when she appeared before provincial magistrate Taurai Manwere.

Magogo, who had worked for the family for 10 years, confessed in court that she had been segxwally abusing the boy for more than four years.

According to Southerneye, it was the State’s case that Magogo, who is now three months pregnant as a result of the abuse, begun bedding the boy in 2009. She was said to have started the abuse by allegedly rubbing his private parts and then forcing him to be intimate with her.

It was alleged that in the first encounter, Magogo walked into the boy’s bedroom naked soon after taking a bath and asked the boy to be intimate with her.

The boy’s mother only discovered that her son was being segxwally abused on March 28 this year when she realised that Magogo was pregnant. Upon inquiring who was responsible, the mother was shocked to discover that it was her son.

In a statement read in court, the boy said Magogo told him that she was pregnant and that he was going to be a father, but asked him not to tell anyone about the matter.

The State led by Tinashe Mhonda is pressing for a maximum jail term for Magogo saying she robbed the boy of his innocence and boyhood.

65-year-old Linda Khumalo from Mamelodi West in South Africa’s Tshwane, a well-known painter in the area, was stripped, whipped, stoned and hacked to death after being accused of molesting a 12-year-old girl by his community.

His wife was among those throwing stones at him and his 17-year-old daughter could only stand helplessly while her father was being killed.

His wife, Salome Mthapo, also 65, said: “I thought he learnt his lesson after what happened the last time.

“When I heard that people were beating him, I couldn’t resist and threw bottles and stones at him.

“But I never thought he would be killed. I’m heartbroken and regret my part in his death.”

Linda’s daughter Elizabeth Malantshwane said she was home when friends came to tell her that her father was being beaten in the street.

“My father was covered in blood and they kept assaulting him. I knew he was going to die when I saw someone hack him with a panga, splitting his head into two,” she said.

Linda’s nephew Bongani Khumalo (26) said: “No one deserves to die like that. If he did something wrong, they should have called the cops.”

A neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, said no one was able to stop the angry crowd, not even the police.

Captain Johannes Maheso said three suspects aged between 21 and 24 were arrested and appeared briefly in the Mamelodi Magistrates Court on Monday on a charge of murder.

8  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / PHOTOS: Real-life Crucifixions, self-flagellation and throwing women into rivers on: 18-04-2014 04:42 PM

As Christians around the world gather to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, here are some of the more unusual religious ceremonies and Easter traditions happening across the globe this week.

From real-life reenactments of the crucifixion in the Philippines to the lavish wedding of a cow and bull in India, there is certainly no shortage of bizarre traditions to mark this important spring holiday…

Crucifixions, Philippines

Christians are nailed to crosses in the Philippines every year in a real-life Good Friday reenactment of Jesus’s suffering.

The annual ritual, dating back to the 1950s, takes place across the country – often attracting a crowd of thousands of people.

Last year, nine men were crucified in Pampanga province’s San Pedro Cutud village, while at least eight others were crucified in neighbouring villages.

Many take part to atone for sins, pray for the sick or for a better life, or to give thanks for what they believe were miracles.

Ruben Enaje, a painter, 51, last year took part in the crucifixions for the 26th time. He began taking part in the annual event to give thanks after he survived falling from a building.

He added that despite the crucifixions being condemned he still took part because the Church ‘stay at home during Good Friday instead of reaching out to penitents to explain their side’.

He had three-inch steel nails hammered into his palms during the ceremony.

The spectacle is a unique brand of Catholicism that merges church traditions with Philippine folk superstitions. More than 80 per cent of the Philippines’ estimated 90 million population are Catholic.

Speaking with Punch, the singer said celebs who do this are asking for trouble.

"I think that artistes who are in the habit of posting expensive items on social media should tread carefully because of the present situation in the country. If they continue to do this, they might be asking for trouble. Also, artistes, who prefer to have their names on the license plates of their cars, had better watch it. If their colleagues in the United States do these things, it doesn’t mean it is okay to do so in Nigeria.”

10  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Pope Francis' Second Holy Thursday Foot Washing Include Muslims, Women [PHOTOS] on: 18-04-2014 04:05 PM

According to the Catholic News Service in a tweet released earlier, those 12 will include a woman and a Muslim, which falls in line with Pope Francis’ actions during last year’s Maundy Thursday.

Pope Francis’ annual Maundy Thursday foot washing took place at the Don Gnocchi Center in Rome, where he included a woman and a Muslim in the the Holy Week ritual, just as he did last year.

More from AP:

ROME (AP) – Pope Francis washed the feet of 12 elderly and disabled people Thursday – women and non-Catholics among them – in a pre-Easter ritual designed to show his willingness to serve others like a “slave.”

Francis’ decision in 2013 to perform the Holy Thursday ritual on women and Muslim inmates at a juvenile detention center helped define his rule-breaking papacy just two weeks after his election. It riled traditionalist Catholics, who pointed to the Vatican’s own regulations that the ritual be performed only on men since Jesus’ 12 apostles were men.

But as archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio frequently performed the ritual on women – a practice that he seems intent on keeping up now that he is pope.

The 2014 edition brought Francis to a center for the elderly and disabled in Rome. Francis kneeled down, washed, dried and kissed the feet of a dozen people, some in wheelchairs, some with grossly swollen and disfigur ed feet.

The Vatican didn’t release the exact breakdown of their religious backgrounds, but said they came from various religious confessions. Italian news reports said one was a Libyan Muslim.

Francis told the faithful that he was performing the ritual to remind himself how to serve others, as Jesus did when he washed the feet of his apostles.

“Jesus made a gesture, a job, the service of a slave, a servant,” he said. “And he leaves this inheritance to us: We need to be servants to one another.”

Francis began Holy Thursday by presiding over Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica celebrating the priesthood, the start of a busy four days of Holy Week commemorations and preparations for next week’s canonization of Popes John Paul II and John XXIII.

During his morning homily Thursday, Francis urged his priests to exhibit joy, though he admitted that he too had suffered “moments of listlessness and boredom which at times overcome us in our priestly life.”

11  Forum / The Buzz Central / 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Footballer Yaya Touré on: 18-04-2014 03:55 PM

Known for his versatility and power on the field, professional footballer Yaya Touré has made a pretty big name for himself in recent years. The African Footballer of the Year three years in a row (2011, 2012, and 2013), the Manchester City player is popular among European football fans and Ivorians back home.

Touré has been an integral part of the Côte d’Ivoire national team for nearly a decade. But beyond his phenomenal playing ability, here are 10 things you didn’t know about footballer Yaya Touré.

Touré got his first pair of football shoes at the age of 10

A natural talent, he played football with friends and family in the streets of Abidjan from a young age. He soon followed in his older brother Kolo’s footsteps to become a key player for the local youth team, ASEC Mimosas.

He is a practicing Muslim

Frequently named Man of the Match during his time in the Premier League, Touré has turned down the English tradition of champagne after league games in accordance with his religious beliefs.

He almost joined Arsenal in 2003

While playing for the Belgian team, Beveren, Touré trialed with Arsenal in 2003. While the manager was interested in signing him, he had difficulties getting a work permit to play in England. Rather than waiting, Touré took a contract with the Ukrainian team Metalurh Donetsk instead, where he played for more than a year.

Both of his brothers are professional footballers

Most are familiar with older brother Kolo Touré, Yaya’s teammate both on the Côte d’Ivoire national team and Manchester City, before Kolo was transferred to Liverpool in 2013. Few may be able to name Yaya’s younger brother, Ibrahim Touré, however, who plays for Al-Safa Sporting Club in Lebanon.

He’s been known to give PUMA equipment to children in West Africa

A spokesman for the athletic company Puma, Yaya has never forgotten his roots and frequently donates gear to children in

need back in Côte d’Ivoire and other countries in West Africa, among his other charitable endeavors.

He had a clash with AS Monaco manager, László Bölöni

When Yaya moved to play for the French Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in 2006, he initially had issues with the manager, László Bölöni. Bölöni wouldn’t put Touré at the midfield position where he had played the majority of his career and proven himself. He was sacked in the middle of the season as Monaco was performing poorly.

He is one of the few midfielders to win African Footballer of the Year

Before Yaya’s first African Footballer of the Year award in 2011, the previous 12 years’ awards had gone to African forwards. As forwards receive more scoring opportunities, they occupy higher-profile positions on the field and receive recognition more often.

He has a history of being targeted by racist mobs.

Yaya has commented several times on his love of playing football in England, where racist mobs targeting black players is a rare occurrence. The worst incidents occurred while he was playing in Portugal and Moscow.

Touré is known for staying behind after training each day

A strong believer that practice makes perfect, Yaya stays behind after practice in order to continue to improve his free-kick technique in particular.

He is a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Environment Program

After joining a campaign against elephant poaching in October, Yaya was named a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. and helps to raise awareness about the problem, along with other environmental issues.

13  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Revealed: The Bad Things MTN Is Doing To Their Workers on: 18-04-2014 03:23 PM

I received this SOS message from an MTN staff who took her time to lay out their sufferings:

Dear Sirs/ Ma
Please I will like to bring to your notice the mismanagement and ill treatment of customer care representatives in Nigeria especially the call center. which is tantamount to corporate slavery by the Online management team and the CCRS service providers. Kindly note that they are termed Independent service provider because they claimed they are not MTN staff nor are they staff of their service providers. But they are been managed by Vendor Management. Please can anyone tell us who vendor management are because they are the ghost running the call center.

Please will anyone tell me of the organization that does not intimate their staff of the salary to be paid monthly and the analysis/breakdown of salary paid? Because different numerations was paid in February and March.

Since January 13th, 2014, Online Management Team increased the work days of call center agents from 4days to 5days without disclosing salary to be paid. they never intimated the agents of the change in schedule but a mail was sent on the 11th of January by Online Vendor management stating the effect/compliance of the schedule on 13th of January. The salary to be paid will only be disclosed by this month end, meaning they are not confident of the salary to be paid. That is why it is kept a secret.

Please is it right for an employee not to know the breakdown/analysis of salary to be paid three months down the line? [Old] salaries was paid on 26th & 27th of February and in March salaries was paid on the 29th.

Despite the so-called segmentation of the CCRS, their earnings before they were segmented was far better off. Even now some of the CCRS are picking calls beyond their segments.Trainings is been given to call center agents where nine hours of their time is taken but they are been paid for six hours is this not tantamount to robbery of the agents. this is a dubious payment act. At least a break down of their salaries is to be given to them which was done before. they claimed the salary is fixed but invoice are sent to calculate hours worked without specifying what is paid per hour which was done before now.

The payment of Overtime was scrapped meaning when you work on public holidays you are been paid normal rates as regular days, the payment for day shift and night is same rate which is not done anywhere. the CCRS are not allowed to bid nor trade their schedule to afford for flexibility because that is what shift jobs are meant to be to give the individuals time to run their lives but that has been struck out. Many cannot afford to go back to school because they Twelve paid days leave and Six unpaid for the year and with the trading and bidding of schedules they trade with colleagues to go to school and do other things conveniently.

Alot of call center agents are been robbed daily on Apapa road due to traffic. An agent was stabbed during robbery attack in the face and arm which was posted on the social medias in February some have died and many had miscarriages. The management care less about the agents welfare and security but about their selfish ambitions and targets to frustrate the old agents so as to fire them or make them resign so as to employ new hands to pay peanuts. they are riding on the wings of unemployment in the country.and many are ill because of the crazy schedule which they are not concerned about.

Please note that Agents in VGC demonstrated when salary was paid in Janurary.

Enforcement of the new schedule is been monitored by Task Masters namely the so called Shift Leads that betrayed their colleagues in supporting the management in the implementation of the said rules. they sold their consciences for salary increment. the margin is far apart to that of the other agents.

Been sick on duty or calling in sick is tantamount to absenteeism and you will not be paid for it. at a time they were asked to send mails before going to the restroom. it is an of fence to charge phones, power bank, laptop etc in the office. Also note that last year march the agents been managed by MEMCOS (MTN co-operatives) and now CNSSL were forced to go get tax id with their personal monies when the contractors that managed them were deducting #5000 tax from the agents salary failed to do same. The CCRS that didn't comply were sacked. the so-called contractors are making more monies from each agents annually than the agents themselves. One Hundred naira (#100) is been deducted from every agent salary managed by CNSSL monthly and Two hundred and ten naira (#210) is been deducted for short payment when money is been refunded.

NOTE: there was such enslavery occurence in Jos some years back where agents were under paid by CNNSL and the Online Management team is still patronizing them if they don't have hidden agenda and it was for this reason the agents protested and the call center was shut down. The management of CNSSL are in charge of Mayfair CCRS and they were the one that were used as the cadaver of undue labour. And the salaries deducted from CNSSL CCRS was paid as bonus to the CCRS in Mayfair in February. The christmas gift been given to Staff in Nigeria was converted to money last year, while other service providers paid their representatives in November, CNSSL paid their Representatives in December and also taxed them on the money.

Every month One thousand nine hundred and fifty naira is deducted from the agents salaries for Medicals (THT) multiplied by the numbers of agents signed up by the agents. And they are a times not allowed to use the hospitals of their choice.

Team building has been cancelled and agents now conrtibute money to go for team building. Mother friendly schedule has been shortened to six months instead of one year

Thorough investigations must be carried out because the Manager Peter Nwaeke, and Partners like Cecilia Olugbenga-Kayode, Clement Aligbe, Lovelyn Madu and Jerry Aghahomovo in Apapa are running the call center like a primary school threatening the agents and slaves. Their rights are been trampled on and which i feel is not fair. The New S M (Nike Jagun) is going by what they tell her. i feel the Organisation has critically look at the situation because an happy and satisfied employee will deliver excellence and also make customers happy.

Enough is enough of the corporate slavery. so i will like the management to critically take this matter up because this act is really affecting the performance of the representatives and so as not to tarnish the image of this great organization and kill the zeal of performance in them . it is time to stop this madness.

An ex- Chairman of the National Electoral Commission of Nigeria (NECON), during the Babangida era, Professor Okon Uya, is dead.

A staff of the University of Uyo and a sibling of the deceased, Mr Edet Uya, confirmed that Prof Okon Uya died at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) in the afternoon of April 17, 2014, Thursday.

“I feel very bad. He has been my mentor, but I thank God for everything. He gave his life to God before he passed on.

“Now, we have to give him a befitting burial as he was an international figure," the brother of the former electoral boss said.

One of the late Uya’s associates, Dr Edwin Madunagu, said:

“My reaction is not of a shock because, like many of us, he was not in excellent health for some time now.

“I know, philosophically, that such a thing could happen to any of us in that type of age bracket.

“But his passing on saddens me because the relationship I had with this man was the type of relationship I have with some frontline Nigerian statesmen.

“It was unique and unique in the sense that it is two-sided. One side he is seen and expected by the public, and the other is private.

“In summary, I will say Uya was a progressive and a socialist.”

The late ex- NECON boss was a professor of African-American History and one-time Nigerian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Argentina.

He had served as NECON chairman after Babangida dismissed Professor Humphrey Nwosu, after the annulled presidential election on June 12, 1993, won convincingly by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.

Rest in peace.

BREAKING CELEBRITIES SHOCKING NEWS
20  Forum / The Buzz Central / Forget Koko Garri, You’re Going Down Fast” – Open Letter to D’banj on: 18-04-2014 11:24 AM

Nigerian superstar singer, D'banj has an open letter dedicated to him. Written by a music critic/concerned fan, the detailed letter contains deep truths and analysis of D'banj's career since his acrimonious split with Don Jazzy.
Read the letter below. after the break....

D’banj may still be raking in millions of naira, but the quality of his music is giving fans and pundits cause for concern.
Let’s start with a simple question: When was the last time D’banj released a hit?
Exactly.
In the past two years of ‘silence’, the kokomaster has in fact released song after song. The problem? All have been uniformly dreadful.
A music manager who has worked with D’banj in the past, and asks to remain unnamed, puts it succinctly: “You know that there is a big problem when a musician begins to be known more for ‘kpo-kpo garri’ and his relationship with Genevieve or some desperate housewife in Atlanta, than for his music.”
Mr. Endowed
In February 2011, the remix of music superstar D’banj’s hit, Mr. Endowed burst onto the collective consciousness of Nigerians. In the accompanying video was his longtime collaborator, partner and friend, Don Jazzy, gently nodding and swaying, true to his style. Also present was ageless rap veteran and lackadaisical charmer, Snoop Dogg – who was christened OluwaSnoop – and who professed love for “my nephew D’banj from Nigeria”. Eja Nla (Yoruba for ‘big fish’), as the Nigerian would come to be known later, had landed himself a really big fish.
Everyone gushed about the alluring video vixen, the wad of dollar bills used as rolls of toilet paper and how good the trio looked together. It would go on to be the definitive moment for D’banj’s international career which blossomed after the release of Oliver Twist, the single that would go on to become a UK Top Ten hit the next summer.
D’banj eventually became the first home-based superstar. His success was a deviation from the model adopted by artistes such Asa and Nneka who migrated abroad to flourish, having been empowered by the enabling atmosphere of their new base. Here was a made-in-Naija boy who had grown in leaps and bounds, his success fuelled by the tenacity to survive the jungle that is the Nigerian music industry.
In June 2011, after months of speculations and rumours, rapper and agent provocateur Kanye West signed both Don Jazzy & D’banj to G.O.O.D Music. The latter featured in the label’s compilation EP, Cruel Summer, making a cameo appearance even in the video for Mercy, alongside fellow label mates Pusha T, Big Sean and of course West. Furthermore, fans were treated to a surprise appearance from Yeezy at the Koko concert in London. With the unprecedented success of the Oliver Twist single and the announcement of international deals, first with Mercury Island Records and then Sony Music, it seemed like D’banj had finally struck gold. Nothing could possibly go wrong. Or could it?
A G.O.O.D man’s worth
The kokomaster’s success had an expiry date, it seems. The magic that truly captivated everyone – from designer Giuseppe Zanotti who once sent him a custom-built pair of sneakers, to reality TV star Kenya Moore who allegedly paid $40,000 to have D’banj pose as her boyfriend – is withering away. His recent singles have not been as infectious as their predecessors were and since Oliver Twist, not one has been as big a hit as any of those released in the era of the defunct Mo’Hits. Even G.O.O.D Music, it seems, has parted ways with the flamboyant entertainer.
In his two years’ with the label, there was neither a tour with Kanye nor a major collaboration. There was the forgettable track with Big Sean and Pusha T who performed in Nigeria, the sub-par verses from Yeezy himself on the Scapegoat remix and vocal credits of a line or less on the Cruel Summer EP. Save for those and the Yeezy cameos – at the London Koko concert and in the Oliver Twist video – D’banj seemed to be on the label’s roster only in name.
Was the deal worth the hype? Should D’banj have listened to advice from partner Don Jazzy and strengthened his hold on the home front before attempting to break new grounds in the US?
“Looking back, it almost seems like it was a huge publicity stunt because there is really nothing to show for it”, argues Arinze Obikili, US-based blogger and founder of Jaguda.com. “When you compare it with 2face who collaborated with T-Pain, and featured on another song with him and Akon,” explains Arinze who is known in Nigerian social media circles as Aribaba, “and Wizkid who is rumored to be on a song with Young Jeezy and The Game, you see that D’banj pretty much wasted two good years with Kanye, going for something that he could have attempted by himself”.
After all the fanfare that greeted his G.O.O.D signing, what might have informed Kanye’s decision to drop him from the label; so soon and without any recognizable impact? Aribaba theorizes: “I think it was a business decision. Perhaps he thought that the US wasn’t ready for mainstream African music or that he had overestimated D’banj’s value. Seeing as most of the artistes signed to G.O.O.D Music have great singing or rapping skills, and D’banj has neither, he probably thought it wasn’t worth the effort trying to force him down the US audience’s throat or figure out what to do with him. What would’ve been ideal is if Don Jazzy stayed. In that case, Don Jazzy would’ve worked with D’banj, and the G.O.O.D Music brand would have been the package around what they would have done to sell to the US market”.
Foladele Falana, an entertainment journalist with TV Continental, questions the motive for the signing. “Our excitement about the whole deal was in vain,” she muses. “I don’t see that he was noticeably more successful with them than when he wasn’t. It shows that you don’t even need to be signed to an international record label to make it”.
Nothing more for Oliver Twist
His away form has trailed him back home, as the story is no different; a number of mediocre singles have been released under his newly established DB Records since his marriage to Kanye and the end of the defunct Mo’Hits. D’Kings Men, a compilation album on his new label got a mention in the New York Times, but was nevertheless less than stellar. Furthermore, his usually high performance ratings have been inconsistent – there was the lacklustre performance in Zimbabwe where he was booed off stage as he ran out of popular songs to perform. Raise Your Glasses, the Hennessy Artistry song has not fared well. His single, Bother You, for the soundtrack of the film adaptation of Half of a Yellow Sun is as cheesy as it is unspectacular, with ThisDay writer, Ayodeji Rotinwa commenting: “Were I not judging it per its mesh with the movie, I’d call it a fine piece of sonic rubbish. I daresay it even falls under D’banj’s customarily low standards.” Indeed, save for that octane-level verse on the groovy remix of Naeto C’s Tony Montana, nothing new from the kokomaster has really stuck.
The Koko Music Empire is on the verge of disintegration and its head honcho has turned to his business ventures to save face, launching products as random and diverse as garri and mobile phones. It doesn’t end there, however. According to a reliable industry source, D’banj literally begged to be featured on songs by KCee and up-comer Burna Boy (Emmah and Won Da Mo respectively) to ‘stay relevant’ in the industry. Both acts established themselves as A-list stars in the three years in which Eja Nla bustled back and forth between Nigeria, the UK and the US.
When begging did not work, he resorted to other means, as was the case with Blame It on the Money, a track which was supposedly ‘bought’ from Durella. Both men released their versions successively, confusing the public and causing fans to debate on ownership of the song. Furthermore, he unsuccessfully attempted to sign Durella, Olamide and other artistes, going as far as authorizing misleading press releases. Eventually, he ended up with DeeVee and 2Kriss, who are yet to release official singles on the label, and his brother Kayswitch.

Mo’Hits to No Hits
It stings to think that things were not always like this. Once, D’banj was the undisputed king in an arena where his touch was the major and telling contribution, rather than the minor one. After returning to Nigeria from a sojourn to the UK in the 2000s, he began a joint effort which was named Mo’Hits Records. It was one of the first modern labels around, challenging the monopoly of Kennis Records, with D’banj as the lead act.
Not since Fela Kuti had another performer so wonderfully captivated fans with his energetic performances on stage. While both men weren’t abundantly blessed in the vocals department, their dexterity with instruments was a common denominator. Fela was a saxophonist who could play other instruments, while D’banj brought fame to the harmonica. And while the one had Tony Allen, the other had Don Jazzy.
He branded himself as the quintessential showman with major input from his partner who was styled in the manner of a Sicilian mafia don; getting credit and loyalty, but speaking only when necessary. They were an instant hit with fans across Nigeria and soon enough, the rest of the African continent.
“They were like 5 and 6,” reminisces Nkem Okafor, another blogger. “It was a partnership like never before and they complemented each other so well, they could almost pass for brothers”. This chemistry was reflected in songs like Tongolo, Why Me and in the Curriculum Vitae and Entertainer albums which showcased them at the peak of their partnership. Among those also signed to the label were their siblings, KaySwitch and D’Prince, who would remain at the periphery for years, as the crew rotated around the two henchmen and another signing, Wande Coal.
Good things don’t last forever however, and so their partnership and by extension, friendship came to a poignant end. As with everyone who gets a whiff of success, D’banj was thirsty for more. After the initial frenzy that greeted the duo’s international signing, the cracks began to appear. Eventually, they split, citing irreconcilable differences and betrayals. That may have signaled the descent of D’banj’s creativity, because while Don Jazzy has since set up Mavin Records and begun lending his beats and those lovable hoarse vocals to various hits, all his estranged partner has is a list of near-misses.
The life and times of Daniel Anderson
What went wrong? “Looking back, one is tempted to say that maybe D’banj should never have rushed to sign with Kanye West,” says Aribaba. “Musically, he hasn’t been the same since he jumped ship to G.O.O.D Music”.
D’banj also fired his longtime manager, Bankuli over an internal disagreement and signed on Mr. Tony Nwakalor, former manager of both Olamide and Tonto Dikeh. With a reputation for being overly arrogant, perhaps it was a perfect alignment.
Arrogance is widely known as one of the former Mo’Hits front man’s traits, and in the period after his G.O.O.D Music deal, his ego grew accordingly. In the grand scheme of things, D’banj’s personal quirks may not count for much, but it disenfranchised the public and was likely one of the factors that caused the change in his music fortunes soon after his G.O.O.D Music deal. First, the name on his social media accounts was changed in May 2012 to Daniel Banjo Anderson, a name he confirmed during an interview at Choice FM, London. It was immediately assumed that he had acquired a superiority complex and the new identity was an attempt to distance himself from his Nigerian roots. The bashing on Twitter only increased when his Nigerian name returned to his bio and he claimed that he had been hacked.
Tempers rose again in December of that year, when he apologized, albeit sarcastically, for making fans walk several kilometers through the sands of Eko Atlantic Beach to attend his Koko Concert (lightheartedly nicknamed the Koko Trek). He was forced to apologize again on Twitter, properly this time, citing overwhelming logistical failures as the reason for the trek.
His lack of a producer has also been advanced as the main reason for his musical misfortunes. Since losing Don Jazzy, the kokomaster’s usual coordination and delivery has been missing. The Jay Sleek-produced Oyato came surprisingly close, but still lacked the production genius the singer has been used to. He employed the services of DeeVee, a young producer signed onto his label, but the formula is still lacking the ‘magic’ element.
An Abuja-based DJ speaking on condition of anonymity expressed his view: “That guy is finished without a producer like Don Baba J. Most of those who call themselves producers today are just beat makers. Don Jazzy tailors the beat to your strength and even he can’t blend with some artistes.”
Falana agrees. “I don’t think D’banj will ever be as great an artist without Don Jazzy or Mo’Hits as he was with them. I’ve never thought he really had much substance as an artist, but being the beast that he is, Don Jazzy was able to make him look good. Plus they had good chemistry so they were a powerful duo. They were made for each other,” she concludes.
Reunion & Rebirth
The general notion is that if they were made for each other, then they can find each other again. Last year, both men were pictured working in the studio, alongside Maybach Music artiste, Wale and Olamide. It prompted speculations that a reunion which would be mutually beneficial for both parties could be underway. Popular OAP and brother-in-law to D’banj, Dotun Orekoya alluded to this in a recent interview, saying “I believe that something might happen. The love is still there, no doubt about it, and they have done music together regardless of whatever they are doing. They are actually good in their own different industries. It is entertainment and there is nothing we can’t see.”
Falana, obviously disappointed with the split, says, “D’banj is just everywhere. Homie should just come back home. Mo’Hits is the answer to whatever he’s looking for up and down. And frankly, I think the Mavins might be missing some D’banj flavour”.
Others flat out disagree.
“People keep speaking of this false equivalence,” says music critic Emmanuel Osanedum. “But it’s nonsense really. This is the truth: in the same period within which D’banj released the ironically titled Don’t tell me nonsense and others, all flops, Don Jazzy has owned the market.”
Indeed, Osanedum may have a point. From Tiwa Savage’s ‘Eminado’ to ‘Surulere’, the single which has become a viral sensation, there is no gainsaying that when it comes to music D’banj is no match for his former producer.
Getting back together?
Critics have argued that it might be hard for the ‘ailing’ superstar to survive for the next decade in the music business without descending into the dredges of obscurity. An A&R for a popular Nigerian music label posits that this may not be the case. “Even though I’ve questioned his relevance as an artiste a lot lately, I realize that we Nigerian listeners love ‘unserious’ music and D’banj is just that. He is no conscious artiste trying to save the world through music, so for that reason, he’ll probably last – if he has the right team behind him”.
“What keeps a musician famous and relevant is not all these celebrity moves – it is the hit songs that keep the engine of fame running. Ask 2face, ask Psquare,” said John Okonedo, a self-confessed audiophile and student at the University of Lagos. “Unfortunately, D’banj’s head is so far up his arse that he might not even see how fast he has gone into darkness”.
That, we think, is the real tragedy, because the kokomaster’s talent, well managed, is truly in a class of its own.
