3705  Forum / The Buzz Central / I Left The Bomb Location 5 Mins Before Explosion - Super Eagle's Ogenyi Onazi on: 28-05-2014 05:52 PM

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi was among the few lucky people who escaped last week's bomb blast that left over 150 killed at a market in Jos, Plateau State unharmed. The Jos-born footballer told BBC he left the popular market barely 15 minutes before the first blast rocked the area.

"I am very, very lucky, just by the grace of God. It was just like an ordinary day. Happy faces and friendly warmth that make you feel happy to be back home. We had gone to the railway market to get something. I think it was 15 minutes later when we heard the loud blast from the place. And suddenly, people were just running. There was chaos and pandemonium. There was smoke, I was confused, lost and just wondered what had happened. I had no idea of what was going on and it was scary. All my life I have never heard a bang or boom like that." He narrated.

Onazi who plays for Lazio of Italy added that he feels concerned about the security challenges in Jos and Nigeria as a country.

"I was born and bred in a peaceful Jos. I may be fortunate enough to live outside the place right now, but I still have my family and friends who live in the city. I always get worried when there are reports of terrible incidents there on a regular basis. It's sad and depressing to live with this." He concluded.

The Igbo community in Jos, the Plateau State capital, has disclosed that it lost no fewer than 36 of its members in the recent Jos bomb attack. The Community also said 42 of its community members were injured in the attack, while several others are still missing. Recall that Jos recently witnessed heavy bomb blasts that killed at least 122 people at the Terminus Market.

Eze Igbo of Plateau State, Professor Joseph Obilom, who gave this disclosure while addressing newsmen at his palace in Jos, also kicked against mass burial for the deceased.
Obilom said the Igbos were the worst hit by the blast, adding that, “our members are mostly traders who own shops at the Terminus market and their goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.”
“We are kicking against a mass burial for our members because it is against our tradition. Our people bury their members in their ancestral homes,” he said.
He called on the federal and state governments to come to intervene by sending relief materials to victims of the unfortunate attacks.

3710  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / North Korean Leader Executes Engineers Behind Collapsed Building That Killed 500 on: 26-05-2014 02:14 PM

According to two Chinese newspapers, North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un ordered the execution by firing squad of 4 design and construction engineers who built the 23-storey building that collapsed in the capital of Pyongyang on May 13th 2014 leading to the death of about 500 people.

92 families lived in the building as at the time it collapsed and most of the people killed were top intelligence and security officials. Kim Jong Un gave a rare public apology to North Koreans after the collapse occurred and ordered an inquiry. The four engineers were reportedly executed last week.

The main cause of the building collapse remains unclear but shoddy construction is said to be a likely cause because onsite directors and workers often smuggle out steel and cement to sell in black market

Kim Jong-Un has been reported to execute anyone who falls short of his expectations, including members of his own family.

After Emma called Jim Iyke out for accusing him of breaking his relationship with actress Nadia Buari, Ini Edo’s husband’s former wife, Ruth Okoro has also called him out. Ruth who accused Jim Iyke of trying every possible means of dating her, says Jim only dates American women because of their green card. He is so desperate to have one, Ruth said. Read her mail which just came in now after the cut.

Quote
In 2005 Jim Iyke started heating on me since when I refused his advances and reported him to my husband Philips Ehiagwina, now Ini Edo's husband. Jim Iyke tried to talk me out of telling my husband and when I insisted he got upset and decided to set Emeka Ike up because Emeka Ike is the only person I confided in and when I was invited to Maryland to feature in a movie, alongside Keturah Hamilton, Emeka Ike was there and I always confided in him and asked questions. Emeka Ike and his wife Emma have been my friends for over 11 years now, I visited them when I visit Nigeria...

Jim Iyke made lofty promises to me trying to win my heart and he never expected me to say no so when I did he tried to convince me telling me that the man I claim to love so much and brought to the United States has been cheating on me with everything in skirt.  (Philips Ehiagwina) an Edo man I met in Nigeria in 1998 and sacrificed all to ensure he has a good life. Jim Iyke told me all that my husband was and is still doing to me in my absence, even got Ini Edo the actress pregnant..at d moment, I have confirmed all Jim Iyke told me about my husband. One of my husband's mistresses Nkiru who lives in Houston,Texas set him up after she found out that my husband betrayed his wife (me) and lied to me. She decided to set him up with an audio coverage and got every prove, he confessed about playing me for a green card on tape.

At the moment he has a case with the United States Immigration and the FBI is also on this case. It is a very long story. I have decided to speak to the press and bring d truth to d table at this moment.

It was very unfair that Jim Iyke who knows the truth but afraid to face it could be so callous to accuse an innocent person like Emeka Ike who has been nothing but a big brother to me since I've known him.

I was very upset about it and and fought for the truth. My husband met me as a virgin and took my virginity on a night of our honeymoon. For him to paint a bad picture of me simply because I reported his green card fraud to d FBI since he has refused to confide in me is something I never saw coming but I will fight to d end.

Jim Iyke has tried dating several girls just to obtain a green card, one of d girls he dated confessed that he tried to get her pregnant and when she said no Jim Iyke decided to spend her money with promises of everlasting love and then left her for another person. Now he is dating a Jamaican girl ( Keturah Hamilton) who just got her green card few months ago after marrying for a green card. She is also a male magazine model who strips naked for male magazines.

Those supporting Jim Iyke right now should know he destroyed my marriage. Jim Iyke is evil, very vicious. It was a good thing that he got exposed. Keturah Hamilton is a loser. She has no means of livelihood. She strips for clubs and that is, Good riddance to bad rubbish.   Jim Iyke framed Emka Ike and me  up. Keturah Hamilton was there. Jim Iyke is a home wrecker, who just got served!  He came back because Keturah just became an American citizen. It is all about getting a green Card.

3716  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Director Insists There’s No Big Deal In Directors Sleeping With Actresses on: 19-05-2014 12:37 PM

Nollywood director, Aniedi Awah Noba’s name might not ring a bell but people in Nollywood know him well. Aniedi isn’t known because he is always behind the scene, directing and dictating who takes which role. Well, in an interview recently, Aniedi says there is no big deal in directors sleeping with actresses, after all a man can meet a woman anywhere and do the thing, stressing it’s only a matter of understanding. Here is what he said........

“If a director is a man and the actress is a woman and they find themselves attracted to each other, they’re permitted to do anything because they are adults. Where it becomes bad is when one person puts a gun on the other person’s head and make unhealthy demands through some blackmail.
segxwal issues are not things you can really predict because they are human related. Anybody can sleep with anybody anywhere in the world as far as it’s an agreeable venture. So if I’m a director and I see an actress and I say I want to sleep with you and the actress agrees I don’t see anything wrong with that.
Where it becomes bad is when I say I will not give you a job until I sleep with you. Now, we over-flog this issue of directors sleeping with actresses. A man will meet a woman anywhere, any day and they will sleep with each other. Let anybody sleep with anybody they want, life goes on. Let’s just do the work”.

In a recent interview, Nollywood screen legend Joke Silva talked about her lack of cooking skills and other ways she takes care of her husband, screen legend, Olu Jacobs..
"I have never lied about this, I have never been 'a doing the cooking kind of woman'. When my husband met me, he knew. He was the one who used to do the cooking because he is good at it. I used to do the cooking when I felt like. Sometimes, it comes out to be a huge success and sometimes a failure. Some years ago, I cooked vegetables and it was terrible and my husband is such a gem, he ate it like that. It is not as if my mum didn't teach me. For my husband, cooking is a therapy and for me it is a chore and yet he will always tell you that I look after him so much, I do that in other ways. We have somebody who does the cooking. I have taught them to cook the way I like and we have people who do the general cleaning."
3718  Forum / The Buzz Central / Here's how Governor Akpabio Spend N2.3b to Charter Private Jet on: 19-05-2014 12:17 PM

In what appears an act of profligacy, the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, is said to have spent well over N2.3 billion on aircraft charter between 2009 and 2011.

“The governor started using the jet shortly after Arik Air withdrew its services from the Akwa Ibom International Airport due to squabbles associated with the ticket subsidy which the government was paying to the aviation company.
“Arik Air was collecting money for empty seats each time it came in or left Ibom International Airport. The ticket subsidy ran into hundreds of thousands of naira on a daily basis with so many people feeding fat on it...
Premium Times investigations showed that Mr. Akpabio signed a charter deal with Vista Jet, a Swiss Airline Holding Company in 2009. The state’s Commissioner for Information, Aniekan Umana, however said the jet was hired based on Governor Akpabio’s need.

Founded in 2004 by Thomas Flohr, Vista Jet has operations in Nigeria and six other countries – the United Kingdom, UK; United Arab Emirate, UAE; China, Malaysia, Austria and Switzerland.

It is one of the world’s premier luxury private jet charter firms flying clients between any two points on a pay-as-you-go fare structure, like a taxi company.

Between 2009 and 2011, Mr. Akpabio is believed to have made an average of four return trips on a weekly basis within and outside Nigeria with the Swiss luxury jet.

The governor was said to have also used the aircraft like an air taxi to convey members of his immediate family and friends within and outside Nigeria.

A source in the Government House, Uyo, who cannot be quoted because he is not permitted to speak on the matter, told PREMIUM TIMES that a whooping N3 million was paid per trip to the Swiss aviation firm and its Nigerian associates.

A prominent politician from the state, believed to have interest in Arik Air, struck the ticket subsidy deal.

After the deal broke down, the authorities of the airline withdrew services from the state, the source said.

Known for his glitzy lifestyle, Mr. Akpabio was said to have afterwards made a permanent charter arrangement with VistaJet to convey him, members of his family and important visitors to the state.

Another source at Ibom International Airport confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that Mr. Akpabio flew with the chartered jet over six times in a week and even made trips abroad with the chartered plane.

“It wasn’t a secret,” he said. “You know our governor is a showman. He was using the Vista Jet to travel all over the world. His family and close friends also used the aircraft anytime they were traveling outside the state.

“The jet was permanently chartered by the government. When the governor had an engagement to attend with his wife and family outside the state, the aircraft was used in conveying them.

“Due to safety concern, you know the governor does not fly in the same aircraft with his wife and children. Each time he needed to travel with his family, the airline will first drop the governor before coming back to pick up his wife and children.

“When they were coming back, the aircraft most times brought the wife and children first before going back for the governor.”

With an average of four return trips at the rate of N3 million per trip, Mr. Akpabio spent a minimum of N24million naira per week and N96 million per month to retain the services of the Swiss private airline.

However, in one year, Akwa Ibom State paid a total of N1.15 billion for its gallivanting governor and N2.3 billion during the two years it retained the services of the luxury airline.

During the years under review, Vista Jet virtually ruled the Akwa Ibom airspace. But PREMIUM TIMES was unable to obtain any record showing that the airline paid any fees for using the state-owned airport facilities.

When the airport management approached the airline at the beginning of its operations, it reportedly insisted it had a charter arrangement with Mr. Akpabio and would not pay the required fees.

A reliable source at the airport urged PREMIUM TIMES to request from the airline the receipt of fees it paid for the period it operated in the state.

More Money, More Debt
In spite of the fact that the state receives the highest in Federal revenue allocation, records made available by the Debt Management Office, DMO, show that Akwa Ibom is the most indebted among oil producing states, indicating that a huge chunk of its resources are frittered away by its profligate governor.

During the period under review, Akwa Ibom State had an external debt stock of $61.8 million, while its domestic debt stock is unknown.

Imo State has an external debt stock of $52.7 million, followed by Ondo State with a total of $52.1 million, and Edo State with a total of $44.3 million during the period under review.

Rivers State had a total of $42.7 million, Abia followed with $34.1 million, while Bayelsa and Delta states had $28.7 million and $19.7 million respectively during the same period.

Elusive spokespersons
When PREMIUM TIMES contacted the spokesperson for Arik Air, Ola Adebanji for comments on the alleged ticket subsidy scam, he said he was not competent to speak on the matter.

Mr. Adebanji, however, said the matter was now before the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN.

He therefore referred our reporters to the FAAN spokesperson, Yakubu Dati, who he said was aBosom  with the issues in dispute.

But when contacted, Mr. Dati said FAAN had no right to speak on a matter involving a private airline, which operated from a facility not under the control of the agency.

Mr. Dati said, “As you are aware, Arik Air is a private airline and Ibom International Airport is owned and operated by the Akwa Ibom State Government.

“FAAN does not have any control in any transaction a private airline makes with an operator of a state-owned airport. You may wish to refer your questions to Arik Air and Akwa Ibom State Government.”

Attempts to reach the management of Vista Jet did not succeed, as the company would not respond to a mail sent to it through its official email account.

Between genuine need and profligacy
The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Aniekan Umana, confirmed that Akwa Ibom State Government secured the services of Vista Jet when Arik Air withdrew its services from the state.

Mr. Umana said, “The Government of Akwa Ibom State hired the jet in 2010-2011 based on need, when Arik Air withdrew services from the state.

“Cost also varied on ether pick and drop; or return trip. But the government never hired the jet on a permanent basis.”

The commissioner did not give details of how much the government paid to the luxury airline firm each time its services were used.

Mr, Umana had, however, confirmed to an online news website, Sahara Reporters, that Mr. Akpabio paid N3 million for a single hire.

“At no time did any single chartered flight cost more than N3m or $20, 000,” the commissioner was quoted to have said, thus confirming what a source at Ibom International Airport told PREMIUM TIMES.

On the high debt profile of the state, Mr. Umana said given the gargantuan projects embarked upon by his principal, it was not out of place to owe.

But analysts believe that if the N2.3billion wasted on air travel by Mr. Akpabio was put to better use, jobs could have been created and thousands of the state’s residents lifted out of poverty.

To determine what the N2.3 billion could have done for the people of Akwa Ibom State if Mr. Akpabio were prudent, PREMIUM TIMES consulted a development expert and Country Director, Action Aid Nigeria, Hussaini Abdu, for comments.

In a response to PREMIUM TIMES inquiry, Mr. Abdu insisted that even though he was unable to verify the source or veracity of our data, the N2.3 billion alleged to have been spent on jet hire was enough to be shared to the 31 council areas in the state with each going home with N74 million.

“This means that each of the local government areas could have constructed one health center at the cost of N50m (using the current budget figures from the National Public Health Care Development Agency) and a standard classroom block at the cost of N15m (using the average cost by the MDG projects),” Mr. Abdu explained.

“Clearly this sum would have paid for these poverty eradication and people-centered projects in each local government area of the state with change to spare.” -
3719  Forum / Naijapals Base (Metro life) / Boko Haram insurgency: Nigeria’s soft approach made sect stronger – US on: 16-05-2014 12:32 PM

A top United States Defense Department official has said Nigeria’s response to the threat of Boko Haram emboldened the violent group.

She, however, assured that her country was committed to the release of more than 200 seized from Government Secondary School, Chibok, a month ago.

“In general, Nigeria has failed to mount an effective campaign against Boko Haram,” said Alice Friend, the Pentagon’s principal Director for African Affairs, in testimony provided to the Senate’s Africa subcommittee ahead of a hearing on Thursday.

“The Department has been deeply concerned for some time by how much the Government of Nigeria has struggled to keep pace with Boko Haram’s growing capabilities,” she said.

She added that, “more troubling” was that atrocities have been perpetrated by some security forces during operations against the group, which means U.S. human rights law would bar providing assistance to them.

She disclosed that 6 U.S. Department of Defense personnel with medical, intelligence, counter-terrorism and communications expertise have been assigned exclusively to the mission of advising Nigerian efforts to recover the girls safely.

“Our intent is to support Nigerian-led efforts to recover the girls and help catalyze greater efforts to secure the Nigerian population from the menace of Boko Haram,” Friend said.

The official also said the Pentagon and Department of State were developing a “regional response” to Boko Haram to improve border security along Nigeria’s frontiers with Chad, Niger and Cameroon.

The intention was to detect and respond to movement of Boko Haram members between Nigeria and its neighbours, she added.

On his part, Robert Jackson, Acting Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, said in his prepared testimony that Washington has been urging Nigeria to reform its approach to Boko Haram.

“When soldiers destroy towns, kill civilians and detain innocent people with impunity, mistrust takes root,” he said.

Apparently, the Chibok trip has been cancelled due to “security reasons,”
the cancellation of this visit underlines just how fragile the security situation is in the north-east or is the President simply afraid of Boko Haram?
