Property worth millions of naira was destroyed when fire gutted a seven-room apartment located on Villa Suite Street, Gyado Villa, Makurdi in Benue State, in the early hours of today.
Narrating his ordeal, the landlord, Mr. Dondu Gangese said the fire originated from a provision shop operated by his wife, through the refrigerator, after power was restored around 3am.
Efforts made by family members and occupants of the apartment, who are mostly students, to put off the fire proved abortive.
He said all his household belongings including educational certificates of some of his children, provisions, cash and students belongings were lost in the inferno. His daughter, who had gotten admission to study Guidance and Counseling at the Benue State University Makurdi also lost the money she withdrew to pay for admission letter and acceptance fee to the fire disaster.
It was alleged that the fire fighters while on their way to the scene, their first vehicle ran short of fuel and they had to bring in another vehicle from the office. Some of the affected students including Mr. Jacob Ato, Maurice Orwough, Kumaiin Moses, Audu Akwebe, Atsagba Emmanuel, Peter Onoja and David Oibe-Jones all of the Benue State University said they lost everything including food stuff to the disaster.
They appealed to government and well meaning individuals to come to their aid by providing them with immediate relief in order to enable them continue with their examinations which is currently ongoing.
The Nigerian Army has instituted a legal action against an online publication, the Premium Times over its failure to retract and apologize over false, subversive and malicious publications against the person of the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai and the Nigerian Army.
All efforts to make the medium make amend proved abortive.

The letter, dated December 22, 2016, and signed by I.M Alkali, a major general, on behalf of Mr. Buratai, accused the paper of publishing reports without reference to the army, adding that its stories exposed a “deep hatred for the leadership of the Nigerian Army.”
The letter expressed displeasure with three stories published by the medium between October and December last year.
The reports were those on the planned invitation of Mr. Buratai by the Code of Conduct Bureau for asset verification, the disappearance of a high number of soldiers after a Boko Haram attack and an investigation detailing how soldiers allegedly killed a kidnapped pastor and labeled him a kidnapper.
The army in its letter described the reports as “false,” “unsubstantiated,” and “unprofessional.”
Officials at PREMIUM TIMES said the letter from the Army Headquarters arrived the paper’s head office in Abuja a day after the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irabor, labelled the medium a Boko Haram supporter on live television.
Contacted Wednesday for comments on the letter, Editor-in-Chief Musikilu Mojeed said, “All I can say at this point is that we stand by our stories.
“We have passed the letter to our lawyers for appropriate response. I can assure you they (the Army) will get an appropriate response before long.”

Unknown gunmen have killed a 50-year old indigine of Oke-agbe Akoko in Ondo state who came home from Lagos to spend his annual leave with his people in the community. The man, identified as Niyi Aremo, who was a landlord in Lagos, on the fateful told his people that he wanted to go to Ikare- Akoko Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) centre to withdraw some money but met many customers at the centre which forced him to move to Akungba for the transaction.
He was equally decided to see his childhood friend in the town.
Sources said it was after he withdrew the money, his friend volunteered to take him back to Ikare on his bike.
However, It was learnt that he did not return to Okeagbe and his family members were worried about his whereabouts, as his phone was dead.
According to a source, it was somebody who knew him that came to identify him, screaming in his pool of blood near a popular hotel ln Ikare Akoko.
Police were said to have been quickily alerted and taken to a private hospital where he died.
His friend at Akungba was said to have been quizzed by the Police in Ikare-Akoko.
The Divisional Police Officer(DPO)in Akoko North East was not around for comments, but one of the senior officers said his men would fish out the culprits.
The Okeagbe-Akoko home of the deceased was in mourning mood.
Sources said the deceased was the only son of his mother while his late father, Aremo was a notable herbalist who assisted many people in the community.

A gunman has opened fire in a Spanish supermarket shouting 'Allahu Akbar'. The attacker, who was reportedly carrying gasoline and gunpowder, walked into the Mercadona shop, in the northwestern region of As Lagoas, before opening firing shots into the air.
Several shoppers were inside the supermarket when the man entered and fired several shots into the air, causing emergency services to swoop on the building.
According to police sources, the young man has psychological problems and is lives next-door to the shop.
The incident, which happened at around 2pm, did not result in any injuries but left many extremely shaken.
One employee confirmed that he had shouted the Arabic phrase for "God is great" before he began shooting.
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday in Abuja approved Nigerian citizenship for 335 foreigners and rejected the applications of 165 others.
The Minister of Interior, Abudulrahman Dambazau, made this known at a joint State House Media briefing with the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, and the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina.
The briefing was held after the FEC meeting, which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Mr. Dambazau explained that the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Nigerian citizenship received 500 applications and recommended 335 of the applicants for approval. “The Ministry of Interior memo is on granting of citizenship to non-Nigerians, who applied.
“So we sit down to consider those applications. The last time this was done was in 2013. So we had some backlog of these applications. “We have over 500 applications that we considered; out of these, 500 applications, 335 in total, were recommended for citizenship and this memo was brought to the council to that effect. “Now the citizenship is either by naturalisation or by registration.
“There are 245 that applied for citizenship by naturalisation and the requirements to be met are clearly stated in section 26 of the constitution.
“Then there is citizenship by naturalisation and that is what is popularly known as Niger-wives, which is for women from foreign countries, who are married to Nigerian citizens. “And that is also clearly spelt out in section 27 of the constitution.
“So, the requirements are there; we consider the requirements; those, who meet the requirement, we recommend, and the advisory council recommends and sends a memo to council for approval.
“So, today, the Council approved the recommendations of those who applied – 345 of them: 245 by naturalisation and 90 by registration.’’ The minister stated that all the successful applicants had complied with the sections 26 and 27 of the Nigerian constitution.
He said: “The moment any applicant doesn’t meet any of the requirement, check section 26 and 27 of the constitution, they are clearly stated there.
“If there are security issues, the security agencies will bring them out to say that a person belongs to a given group in-terms of security risk. “But apart from that, we followed the rules and regulations, those constitutional requirements must be met.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that in 2013 the Federal Government granted Nigerian citizenship to 174 foreigners while the applications of 27 persons were rejected.

A middle aged woman today gave birth to a baby boy inside a BRT bus.
The woman was delivered of the baby around 9am on Wednesday January 11, 2017, along Mile 12/ Ketu, Lagos.
She had boarded the bus at Irawo bus stop going to the hospital believed to be at Iyana Ipaja. But the baby could not wait much longer.
The woman became uncomfortable immediately after boarding as she was seen showing restlessness.

Dylann Roof, the Charleston shooter who killed 9 black Emmanuel AME Church members in June 2015 has been sentenced to death for his crime.
The jury reached the decision that the 22-year-old would be executed after 3 hours of deliberations.
Roof was convicted of 33 federal charges, including murder and hate crimes last month.
The Justice Department says he is the first person to get the death penalty for federal hate crimes.
During the sentencing, Roof represented himself, and without remorse, told jurors that he didn’t have a mental illness.
“I felt like I had to do it. I still feel like I have to do it,” he told jurors.
A federal jury has sentenced Dylann Roof to death for killing nine black church members in a racially motivated attack in 2015.
He also told FBI agents, during interrogation, that he wanted to bring back segregation or perhaps start a race war with the slayings.
His family offered a brief statement upon sentencing.
“We will always love Dylann. We will struggle as long as we live to understand why he committed this horrible attack, which caused so much pain to so many good people. We wish to express the grief we feel for the victims of his crimes, and our sympathy to the many families he has hurt. We continue to pray for the Emmanuel AME families and the Charleston community,” the family stated.
“We want to express our sympathy to all of the families who were so grievously hurt by Dylann Roof’s actions. Today’s sentencing decision means that this case will not be over for a very long time. We are sorry that, despite our best efforts, the legal proceedings have shed so little light on the reasons for this tragedy,” his lawyers also stated.

The Chief Medical Director, the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex, Prof. Victor Adetiloye, Osun State, has urged Nigerians to stop travelling abroad for open heart surgery.
The CMD said rushing to foreign hospitals for the procedure, which could be done in the country, was a waste of resources and an embarrassment to the nation.
Adetiloye said this in Ile-Ife while speaking with our correspondent on some of the achievements recorded by the hospital last year.
The CMD, who stated that open heart surgery was now done routinely in the hospital, expressed surprise at the exodus of Nigerians to hospitals abroad for the same treatment, which could be done at the hospital at a much cheaper cost.
Adetiloye said OAUTHC performed 14 open heart surgeries between April and December, 2016 and had about 65 children waiting for open heart surgeries in the hospital now.
Some of the medical personnel, who carried out the operations present at the press conference are the Consultant Paediatrics Cardiologist, Dr. John Okeniyi; Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Uvie Onakpoya; Consultant Cardiac Anaesthesiologist , Dr. Anthony Adenekan and Cardiac Perioperative Nurse, Mrs. Bola Bello,
He said, “We have performed 14 open heart surgeries since April last year and our charges are very cheap. I read a media report about a child whose parents are soliciting the sum of N6m to take the child to an Indian hospital for open heart surgery, which we can do here successfully.
“We are performing open heart surgeries routinely here and instead of N6 million which will be wasted abroad, we do the same operation for less than N1.5m while some procedures can be done for less than N1m. It is embarrassing to us that Nigerians are traveling abroad every day for open heart surgery that we do here at OAUTHC.”
Adetiloye, however, called on wealthy Nigerians and other public spirited people to come to the aid of the hospital by providing funds or donating medical equipment so as to assist the OAUTHC to perform more of these surgeries.
He commended the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi for assisting the hospital with consumables when the hospitals wanted to start performing open-heart surgeries. He also commended a philanthropist, Edmond Tiemo, for donating some equipment to the hospital for the same purpose.
The Consultant Paediatrics Cardiologist, Dr. John Okeniyi, noted that heart diseases were on the increase in the country due to radiation from X-ray machines, telecoms masts, drugs and alcohol consumption among other causes.

The new Ghanaian President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday morning started work at the presidential palace by first inspecting a guard of honour mounted by the Ghana Armed Forces.
