In a significant political development, former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2023, Atiku Abubakar, has voiced his readiness to throw his weight behind Peter Obi should the party opt to field a candidate from the South-East for the presidency in 2027.

Atiku Abubakar made this declaration during an interview with BBC Hausa Service, reaffirming his commitment to abide by the party's decision regarding the zoning of the presidential ticket.

"I have repeatedly stated, even before the 2023 general elections, that if the PDP decides to zone the presidential ticket to the South or specifically the South-East, I won't contest it," Atiku remarked, emphasizing his willingness to support Peter Obi or any other candidate chosen by the party.

The former Vice President highlighted the democratic ethos guiding his political stance, asserting that his decision to contest the 2023 presidential ticket was motivated by the open nature of the party's selection process at the time.

Atiku Abubakar also hinted at the possibility of a merger between the PDP and the Labour Party, underscoring the fluid dynamics of political alliances in Nigeria's ever-evolving landscape.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Atiku affirmed that his fate would be determined by the collective will of party members, hinting at a potential alliance with Peter Obi following their recent meeting.

While downplaying speculation surrounding the meeting, Atiku characterized it as a routine gathering among opposition figures, stressing the importance of fostering dialogue and cooperation for the greater good of Nigeria's democracy.

Addressing the prospect of a merger, Atiku expressed optimism, stating, "We can merge to achieve a common goal. So, it's possible, and nothing can stop it if we wish to achieve that."

The disclosure comes in the wake of private discussions held by Peter Obi with Atiku and other PDP leaders in Abuja, as well as separate meetings with former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, igniting speculation about potential coalition-building efforts ahead of the 2027 polls.
