In a significant breakthrough, the Edo State Police Command has arrested 19-year-old Godstime Abhulime on charges of kidnapping a four-year-old girl and demanding a ransom of ₦300,000. The arrest was confirmed by the State Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye.
According to reports from the Daily Post, the incident occurred in Emaudo, Ekpoma, located in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. The young suspect, a relative of the victim, allegedly lured the minor from her home and transported her to an undisclosed location using a motorcycle.
An anonymous source close to the family revealed that the girl was held captive for two days. During this time, one of the suspect's accomplices, identified as Destiny, also known as 'Paulo', contacted the victim's family, initially demanding a ransom of ₦7 million. The family, fearing for the child's safety, reported the kidnapping to the Ekpoma divisional police office.
Following intense negotiations and amid concerns for the girl's wellbeing, the family agreed to pay ₦300,000 to secure her release. Subsequently, the police arrested Godstime, who confessed to the crime, revealing that the kidnapping was orchestrated to raise funds to pay off cult members who had threatened their lives.
Commissioner Adegboye stated that the suspect would soon be arraigned in court, underscoring the ongoing commitment of the Edo State Police to combatting crime and ensuring the safety of its residents.
