The Federal Government may negotiate with Boko Haram through third parties, it was learnt yesterday.

But the third parties might be those with links to the sect, trusted volunteers and some experts who had managed such a matter in the past.

The government was however silent on how it will go about the process whic, it said it might treat with much confidentiality.

According to a source in government, who spoke exclusively yesterday with our correspondent, the government opted for third parties because it is difficult to identify which group to dialogue with.

The source said: “The government has also said it does not rule out dialogue. The position of President Goodluck Jonathan is that who do you dialogue with? So, at no time did the government say it is opposed to dialogue.

“The truth is that the government is not involved and will not be involved in direct dialogue with the sect at this stage.

“We may have to use third parties, especially experts who the two parties trusted to broker peace.

The source admitted that the initial dialogue process was facilitated by Dr. Datti Ahmed before it became an issue.

“I don’t think we will tell you those who may be involved in the dialogue because it will be an underground thing.

“What is important is that the government is not opposed to dialogue at all in resolving any issue being brought forward by the group,” the source added.

On ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s disclosure that the government was already talking with Boko Haram, the source said: “I think the ex-President was echoing what Vice-President Namadi Sambo said at a forum by an Islamic group.”
