All Nigeria Peoples Party and the Congress for Progressive Change have called on Federal Government to name June 12 after the late Chief Moshood Abiola.
They said the naming of the University of Lagos after the deceased believed to be the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election by the FG was not enough for the sacrifice he made.
Speaking in a telephone interview with our correspondent, the National Publicity Secretary of ANPP, Chief Emma Enekwu, said, “The Federal Government should name June 12 Abiola’s Day and make it Democracy Day instead of the May 29 we are currently observing.
“The government should look for a better way of immortalising him instead of naming the University of Lagos after him, which is even a controversial matter.
“Abiola deserves more than that. His name should not be mentioned in any controversial matter in this country. He does not deserve any controversy like that.”
The National Publicity Secretary of CPC, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, in a test message to our correspondent from the United States, said, “President Goodluck Jonathan has unwittingly dishonoured Abiola with the manner he tried to honour him.
“If a black man in the person of Martin Luther-King has his birthday as a public holiday in the US because of the supreme sacrifice he made in growing the nation, why can’t the same be done to Abiola?”
Former aide to Abiola, Mr. Olu Akerele, said the renaming of UNILAG after Abiola was for political reasons.
He said, “Next only to the military government that annulled the freest and fairest election in Nigeria which the late Abiola won; and next only to the other Military Junta that incarcerated, tortured and killed the late June 12 icon, was the unforgivable dragging of the late icon’s name right in the mud of political-seeking by the present administration when it unilaterally renamed University of Lagos as Moshood Abiola University.”
Akerele, who suffered incarceration along with Abiola, argued that “renaming UNILAG MAU was certainly not on the long list of the politically-desirables.”
He added that Abiola had “selflessly martyred himself and courageously watered the very tree of the democracy that we enjoy today with his blood, nothing short of declaring him President-Elect posthumously and recognising the day that symbolises his political struggle will assuage the anger of the political gods”.
