Mailafia made the call in Abuja on Tuesday at an event to mark this year’s World Environment Day, which theme was: “Green Economy: Does it include you?”
The event came a week after the rest of the world celebrated it, as the day fell within the mourning period the Federal Government declared for the victims of the June 3, 2012, DANA AIR crash in Lagos.
The minister stressed that media education was critical to eliminating environment-related challenges like erosion, deforestation, flooding and other land degradation caused by human activities.
According to her, the media and other groups like non-governmental organisations (NGOs), trade unions, peasant farmers, women, youths, among others, can educate Nigerians on preventive measures such as neighbourhood clean-up exercise, tree planting and forest preservation.
