
Following incessant bomb blasts and gun battle in the Northern part of the country, most youth and their parents have rejected the offer to serve in the war-torn states. But the NYSC had put its foot down saying it will not rescind on the decision. The NYSC orientation camp in Maiduguri for example has been closed since last year.
The NYSC Director- General, Brig-Gen Nnamdi Okore-Affa has said, “Nigeria has 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. By our mandate, we must post corps members to all states.
“However, because some areas have been described as volatile, what we will do is to reduce the number of corps member sent to such states. They will be posted to areas where their security will be guaranteed.
“The truth is that each state deserves corps members. We will not deliberately send corps members to violence-prone areas, but we will send to at least state capitals.”
Inspite of Okore-Affa's statement though, there have been calls for the NYSC to be reviewed so that coprs members will serve in their zones of origin. A Parents-Teachers Association bigwig, Michael Nwachukwu, said that although NYSC scheme was laudable, the insurgency in those troubled places had made nonsense of it.
