Lucky! Four Nigerians Saved From Malaysia's Hangman's Noose. See Pics.

http://odili.net/news/source/2011/sep/4/310.html

Like the biblical injunction which states that 'the wages of sin is death', in Malaysia, the punishment for trafficking in hard drugs is outright death by hanging; no appeal!

Curiously, four Nigerians, Messrs Ugochukwu Emmanuel Innocent, Udeh Innocent Chukwuemeka, Olisa Kelvin Chukwuka and Mgbeajuo Alex Chigozie, perhaps, out of sheer greed or ignorance, would have added to the numbers of persons executed by hanging in the Asian country for allegedly trafficking in hard drugs.

The suspects were rounded up at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos recently having been profiled to have ingested substances that tested positive for amphetamine weighing 5.715kgs.

Ugochukwu Emmanuel who travelled with a Nigerian passport bearing Gaye Jerry, 33, wanted to board an Ethiopian Airways flight when he was found to have concealed 600 grammes of Methamphetamine in the metal handle of his luggage while Udeh Innocent Chukwuemeka, 36, hid 2kgs of similar drug in a false compartment of his bag during the screening of Qatar Airways flight.

Olisah Kelvin Chukwuka, 26, who was caught during the screening of passengers on an Egypt Air flight, ingested 1.300kg while Mgbeajuo Alex Chigozie, 31, who attempted to board an Emirate Airline, swallowed 1.815kg of Methamphetamine. All four suspects were destined for Malaysia.

Chairman of NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade while reacting to the degree of involvement of Nigerian youths in drug deals urged the youths to join the anti-drug campaigns and make the world a drug -free place.

The drug czar said, "While we celebrate the prevention of these four suspects from premature death, members of the public, particularly the youths, must make frantic efforts individually to resist drug trafficking.

Another worrisome dimension is the number of Nigerians like Gaye Jerry with foreign passports and hidden identities who are on death roll in other countries. Everybody must be actively involved in this campaign."

Sources at NDLEA intimated Crime Guard that Gaye Jerry, a native of Imo State but resides in Lagos, concealed 600 grammes in the metal handle of his luggage. The bag contained foodstuff meant to distract attention, still the drug was discovered during routine search at the luggage check desk.

Gaye, a trader who sells clothes, lived in Gambia between 2000 and 2004. Like Gaye, Udeh Innocent Chukwuemeka who is a student in Malaysia, concealed 2kgs of methamphetamine in his bag. Udeh is studying English at Edutran College at Kaula Lumpur, Malaysia.

During interrogation, he confessed that he took the risk to improve his financial status. "I got involved in drug trafficking because I need money. I am an English language student in Malaysia.

After my primary school at Central School, Nnobi, I was admitted at Madonna Commercial School also in Nnobi but I stopped in class two due to lack of fund. I also worked as a commercial motorcyclist and taxi driver in Abia State before I travelled to Malaysia in search of greener pastures. I regret my involvement," he lamented.

18 Nigerians face execution in Indonesia

Eighteen Nigerians who were condemned to death by the Indonesian judiciary in 2008 for their alleged various criminal offences, including drug peddling and other related offences, may be executed in Indonesia between June and August, this year.

The convicts had been slated for execution in Indonesia on September 28, 2008, shortly after the Ramadan feast of Indonesians, but Nigeria’s high powered delegation, comprising the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora and some Senators visited Indonesia and opened discussions between the Nigerian and Indonesian governments on the fate of the convicts.

The Indonesian government had condemned a total of 21 Nigerians to death, sentenced four to life imprisonment and eight others to various jail terms, ranging from 11 to 18 years.
Out of the 21 condemned Nigerians, two of them, Samuel Iwuchukwu Okoye, and Hassan Anthony Nwaolisa, had already been executed on June 28, 2008, while another, Augustine Celo Ogbonna, died in prison custody in September, 2008.

In a strongly worded petition to Hon. Abike Dabiri-Ewa, Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Diaspora, dated April 22, 2010, a copy of which was made available to Daily Sun yesterday in Onitsha, Anambra State, an Onitsha-based human rights lawyer, Barrister Melly Chukwuemeka Eze, is appealing to the National Assembly to take concrete steps with a view to getting reprieve for the condemned Nigerians.

Eze, in the petition entitled: “Shocking revelation from Indonesian Prisons: Execution of 18 Nigerians scheduled for between June and August, 2010,” noted that most shockingly, he learnt from the prisoners that those on death row might be executed anytime between June and August this year if no further diplomatic efforts and pressure were mounted on Indonesian authorities.
According to Eze, “I have it on good and reliable authority that officials of Indonesian government who opened discussions with the Nigerian delegation are now expressing disappointment over an apparent display of unseriousness on the part of Nigerian government over the diplomatic move already initiated by Nigerian government officials”.

The human rights lawyer recalled that his earlier petition to the Presidency, National Assembly and the Foreign Affairs Ministry in October, 2008 in respect of the 18 Nigerians on death row and others serving various jail terms in Indonesia had attracted reactions from Senator Uche Chukwumerije, who moved a motion on the floor of the Senate to that effect.

He also recalled that his earlier petition had attracted the attention of the foreign affairs minister who sent a high powered delegation to Indonesia to mediate on behalf of the convicts and other prisoners, numbering 50, serving various jail terms in Indonesia, with the minister himself as part of the delegation.

He recalled that the Nigerian delegation had returned with a strong hope of change of heart by the Indonesian authorities, which prompted Dabiri-Ewa to grant a press interview where she assured Nigerians that the Nigerian government was committed to doing everything possible to address the plight of those Nigerians, adding that the Senate President also wrote him personally, promising that the issue would be addressed, just as Senator Chukwumerije personally wrote.
He expressed the fear that government might not have taken any further steps to get reprieve for these Nigerians, nearly two years after.

He gave the names of those on death row as Kingsley Okonkwo, Michael Titus Igwe (Real name-Izuchukwu F. Ezimoha), Uchenna Cajethan Onyenworo, Ekperedike S. Olekama, Adam Wilson (real name-Emmanuel Okari), Hillary K. Chimezie, Eugene Ape and Humphery Ejike.
Others on the death row are Okwudili Ayotaeze, Obinna Nwajiagu, Daniel Enemuo, Fredrick Lutter (Real name-Benjamin Obiora), Sylvester Nwaolisa, Gabriel Nnadi, Dennis Anumona and Ikenna Ezenwune, while Stephen Rashid, Joseph Ndaba, Ken Michael and Obinna George are currently serving life imprisonment.

He disclosed that most of the convicts, who are currently languishing in Nusakambagan Island prisons in Jarkata and other parts of Indonesia, were arrested shortly on arrival to the country and without them hearing Indonesian language, they were sentenced to death, without allowing them to take plea or have fair representation from legal practitioners.

Giving an instance of one of the convicts who was arrested with an Indonesian who had since been released, and another one who was arrested in a hotel where a bag of heroin was dumped by unknown persons, who was later arrested, the human rights lawyer saidthe worst part of the whole issue was that the Indonesian government said for their cases to be reviewed, each of the convicts must pay between $15,000 to $20,000 US Dollars

NDLEA intercepts N90m ‘cocaine cream’ in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted the first known creamy cocaine in the country.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the 9.500kg cocaine was packaged to look like the normal ice cream.

It was learnt that the creamy cocaine was brought into the country in four big coolers through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos.

Spokesman of the NDLEA, Mr. Mitchelle Ofoyeju, who confirmed the seizure by the anti-drug agency, said the substance that later tested positive for cocaine was imported from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

He said, “Operatives of the NDLEA detected the drug following suspicion of the four giant size water coolers. Further examination revealed the parcels of drugs after it was cut open.

“Four parcels each of creamy cocaine were found to have been industrially strapped round the body of the four coolers.

“In all, a total of 16 parcels weighing 9.500kg, with an estimated street value of over N90m, were recovered during search at the airport’s arrival hall.”

Ofoyeju said the agency had arrested a 50-year-old man, Martin Ikechukwu, in connection with the discovery.

He described Ikechukwu as an unrepentant suspected drug trafficker.

“He is currently facing trial over unlawful importation of a kilogramme of cocaine from Brazil in 2010,” Ofoyeju said.

NDLEA findings showed that Ikechukwu hailed from Enugu State and graduated from Government Technical College, Awka in 1980.

In a purported statement to the agency, Ikechukwu said he wanted to raise some money to enable him to settle down with his family.

“I was living in Brazil between 2009 and 2010. I was arrested when I came home in 2010. When I was granted bail, there was nobody to help me. I had no option but to smuggle drugs again because they promised to pay me the sum of N3m. My intention was to settle down with my family because I am not getting younger,” Martin stated.

Ofoyeju said the agency was worried that suspects go back to drug business after they had been arrested and granted bail.

He said, “NDLEA Airport Commander, Hamza Umar, said the issue of re-arrest of suspected drug traffickers who are released on bail has been a major challenge of the command. This suspect (Ikechukwu) was first arrested on February 23, 2010 for ingesting one kilogramme of cocaine.

“The agency is also investigating the circumstances under which the suspect acquired new travel documents.”

The Chairman of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Giade, said the arrest showed the extent to which drug barons could go. “This arrest, however, raised questions on the issue of bail for drug traffickers,” he said.

I disagree that someone can be arrested in another country where he/she does not understand their language. aishatua; You wrote: (Indonesia, were arrested shortly on arrival to the country and without them hearing Indonesian language). I want to ask, is it hearing the language or understanding the language? Besides; some post in naijapals were getting members out of mind.  Embarrassed
