Founding Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, Justice Mustapha Akanbi, has raised the alarm that the high rate of corruption in Nigeria will consume the country, if the trend remain unchecked.

In an interview with our correspondent in Ilorin on Tuesday, he stated that there was the need for concerted and collaborative efforts by the government and all Nigerians to successfully wage the anti-graft war.

He said, “Nigerians should speak out and fight for corruption. Otherwise, we will be ruined. If we do not try and kill corruption, corruption will kill us, all of us in Nigeria. All these events we are experiencing – kidnappings, armed robberies and other social malaise – are all products of corruption. Once we are able to tackle corruption, things will get better for the country.

“I have said it times without number that the anti-corruption war cannot be effectively fought by Mr. President or the enforcement agencies alone. All Nigerians must be actively involved. We have descended to a level of degradation that makes our hearts bleed. But nobody is going to fight for us. Nigerians are too lackadaisical about fighting corruption.”

He urged Nigerians to be committed to the anti-graft war and stop glorifying corrupt people.

Akanbi added that Nigerians should not be discouraged by some of the challenges being encountered in trying to prosecute alleged corrupt officials.

Akanbi, who is also a former President Court of Appeal, advised the Federal Government to set deadlines for the anti-graft agencies to tidy up their investigations and commence prosecutions of alleged corrupt officials.

He said the Federal Government should ensure that all the relevant agencies and institutions involved in investigation and prosecution of culprits were effective and committed to the ideals of sanitising the country.

He added that the Federal Government should match action with its promise to prosecute all indicted people and companies in the fuel subsidy probe and other financial scams in the country.
