THE inquest into the June 3, 2012 crash of a Dana Air plane in Iju/Ishaga area of Lagos was, on Monday, disrupted at a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, due to a sudden smoke oozing out of the ceiling of the court building.

The smoke, oozing out from the ceiling of the public gallery, was accompanied by a burning smell about two hours into the proceedings.

The coroner, Mr Alexander Komolafe, was forced to adjourn the matter, as the smoke was attributed to an electrical fault.

According to him, he had to rise in the interest of the safety of the people and to also allow the technical crew of the court to investigate the problem and make corrections.

Earlier, the coroner had asked the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) to tender an extract of the technical log book of the ill-fated Dana aircraft.

While continuing his testimony before the court on Monday, Mr Emmanuel Dialla from the AIB said the technical log book of the aircraft was in the custody of the bureau.

In his cross examination by Mrs Funmi Falana, Dialla told the court that the technical log book contained records of the aircraft on a daily basis.

Speaking on the black box, Dialla said there were two black boxes, the flight recorder and the copy voice recorder, adding that the flight recorder was not recovered due to the overheating, though the copy voice recorder was recovered.

“The copy voice recorder had burning temperature, but we were able to download all the necessary information needed for the investigation,” Dialla said.

He also informed the inquest that the captain of the aircraft made a distress call about the two engines that failed.

When asked if the bureau carried out investigations on the aviation fuel supplied by MRS to the airline, Dialla said it did extensive investigations of the oil supplied to the aircraft, adding that it also took samples from the tankers and other airlines.
