Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Hope Eghagha, was today kidnapped in a deadly attack near Asaba, the capital of his home state. SaharaReporters learnt that the kidnappers shot and killed Mr. Eghagha’s police orderly before speeding off with the commissioner.
Mr. Eghagha, who holds a PhD in English from the University of Lagos, was a senior lecturer in the same university before accepting a commissionership in the cabinet of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta.
For several years, Mr. Eghagha wrote a column in the (Nigerian) Guardian and other newspapers. He also served as a part-time member of the Guardian’s editorial board.
Delta state commissioner of information, Chike Ogeah confirmed that Mr. Eghagha was kidnapped, also a senior aide to Mr. Uduaghan told Saharareporters that his whereabouts were still unknown. It was not clear whether the commissioner’s kidnappers had made any contacts with Eghagha’s family.
