The helicopter probably collided with a crane attached to the under-construction St George Wharf Tower, the Daily Mail reported, citing eye witnesses. The chopper came down near Wandsworth Road, which runs from the Vauxhall district toward the Battersea and Clapham Common areas. TV pictures showed wreckage ablaze close to bus stops and a J Sainsbury Plc store.
The Metropolitan Police said they had been alerted to the incident around 8am in London. Fire trucks, ambulances and police have all been dispatched. It is too early to confirm casualties, the police said. The pilot was the only person aboard the helicopter, Sky News reported.
Trains traveling into the south London train stations of Vauxhall and Waterloo are operating normally, a National Rail spokeswoman said.
