Information emerging from the Senate has disclosed that 776 Nigerians are presently serving various jail terms in seven countries, including Cameroon, Gabon and Niger Republic. According to the upper legislative body, at its plenary session on Tuesday, the figure includes Spain (395); Gabon (126); Thailand (91); United States (62); Malaysia (43); Niger (30) and Cameroon (29).

The Senate however urged the Federal Government to seek for redress and restitution for the 14 Nigerians found not culpable out of the 27 deported from Spain recently. The resolution followed a motion by the chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Matthew Nwagwu, as, according to him, the motion became imperative, given the fact that many Nigerians suffered one form of unjust treatment or the other in their host countries.

Senator Nwagwu noted with concern the unfair treatment and harassment of Nigerians in foreign countries, leading to their intimidation, arrest, detention, torture, deportation and occasional deaths.

“It is not in all cases that our citizens are guilty of the offences they are alleged to have committed,” he said, adding that investigations by combined team of officers from the police, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the State Security Service (SSS) and the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) showed that 14 out of the recently deported 27 Nigerians from Spain were not guilty of the offences for which they were deported by the Spanish authorities.
