THISDAY gathered that although the police killed five members of the robbery gang, they also lost two officers .
According to a report, the gang had first stormed Ajah at about 1am, where they snatched a Honda Odyssey space bus, which was reportedly heading for Ajao Estate.
It was however gathered that midway, they reportedly shot two policemen who were on patrol at Ajao Estate and as at press time, one of the policemen who had been rushed to the hospital was said to have died.
At the scene of their operation at Ajao Estate, the gang was said to have robbed a warehouse where telephones and electronic gadgets were sold.
It was gathered that SARS operatives trailed the robbers to Stadium Bus Stop during which the two sides engaged in a gun duel that led to the death of another policemen and five members of the gang.
“During the gun duel, three of the suspects were first shot and although the driver of the vehicle was hit with bullets, he kept moving until they reached Eko Bridge .
"At that point, the vehicle somersaulted and three out of the eight suspects managed to escape with bullet wounds while the rest died. The bodies of the dead suspects were taken to the police command's headquarters , Ikeja," a source said.
The police also recovered the Honda Odyssey, four automatic Pump Action Rifles (PARs), four Brownie pistols and a revolver pistol.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the robbers were responsible for the killing of the manager of 04 Hotel and three other members of staff last week in Ajah.
According to the source, the suspects were said to have accused the manager and staff of giving the police information about their gang, which led to the arrest of their suspected leader.
