There's a new Domestic Violence Law in Lagos State, and it states that if you beat your wife, you will go to Jail. It is now an offense for any man to hit his wife.

According to the deputy governor of Lagos State, Hon Joke Orelope-Adefulire, the Domestic Violence Law is made not only to protect women who are most times the target of violence in the home but also to safeguard the interest of men, children, servants, maids and everyone who may be a victim of domestic violence.

In case of man/woman abuse issues, it does not matter whether there's a valid contracted marriage between the victim and the perpetrator of the act as long as they are living together in a home setting. Continue...

Here's what happens when there's a case of domestic violence.
1. Remove the abuser from the home pending when the abuse is corrected
2. Or remove the complainant from the residence and put in a protective home
3. Provision of financial assistance by the state via the Office of the Public Defender/Legal Aid Council to victims of abuse who maybe financially unable to seek redress in court.
4. The court can issue warrant of arrest and remand order

Well done. Domestic violence is just another example of thuggery and people have been getting away with it for too long!

Children grow up in houses (I won't describe them as homes) and witness this behaviour and think it is okay to beat someone into submission. Well it is not. They too then grow up and continue the culture because they view it as a normal part of married life which it is not.

My only concern is that whereas in the western world, some victims of domestic violence will come forward for help but in Nigeria I envisage families pleading with their daughters not to put the family name or husbands name to shame by reporting such violence to the authorities!

And without the family backing how do they cope. So to maintain a semblance of 'a good marriage' they stay put and the beatings continue.

So I hope the government assures the people who want to come forward that everything will be treated with strict confidentiality.

It's good ideal but it will also bring in the much more harm and trashing of Womanhood.. If a man is not allowed to beat a woman, then the man will use all sorts of bad Names against woman like calling her a bitch a hoe etc.. In this process every woman will be a BITCH IN FEW YEARS TO COME.. ASK THE WESTERN NATION. They will tell you..
