Gov. Danbaba Suntai of Nigeria’s Taraba state on Sunday arrived in Abuja after 10 months of medical treatment in Germany and the United States, following a plane crash on 25 October last year. He piloted the small Cessna plane, which crash-landed in Yola, capital of neighboring Adamawa state. Some of his aides were also injured, but they have since recovered. Suntai arrived at the old wing of the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja at about 1.10p.m. Gov. Danbaba Suntai, being aided to wave to the people Curiously, he was aided to alight from the aircraft and an aide also held him as he vacuously waved, at the door of the plane, to people at the airport.Suntai did not also talk to newsmen but one of his associates, John Dara, said that the governor was mentally alert as against speculations that he had lost his memory.
“We were excited to see him and it is understandable that after the long trip, he was weak and tired. But, we were thrilled by the fact that he recognised everyone by name which shows that he is mentally alert and lucid,’’ Dara said.
He noted that the governor’s mental alertness indicated that he was capable of taking over the affairs of the state. “That itself is a clear indication that he is capable of running the affairs of Taraba as the governor. We had no doubt in our minds that when he gets back to Jalingo today, it will be up to his doctor to say whether he will resume today or in a couple of days to come. “But he is clearly okay and able to function,’’ Dara said. He said that the governor’s decision not to talk to newsmen might be because of the long journey. “Talking to newsmen can be spontaneous and organised. So, we felt that when he has rested well, it will be easier for him to address Nigerians,’’ Dara said. Another close associate of Suntai, Rima Shamulu, said the decision to take over the ruling of the state lies with him, in line with the provisions of the constitution. “There are provisions in the constitution for you to take over or not to. “And if he gets back to Jalingo today, and he transmits a letter to the state assembly through the speaker that he has arrived, that is all; he can take over as the governor. “So, I don’t know why there are speculations around because there is constitutional provision when someone becomes too sick to function; it is not for us to speculate. “And with the way I saw him, he is alright,’’ Shamulu said. Suntai was transferred from hospital in Yola to the National Hospital, Abuja, on October 26, 2012, preparatory to his being flown to Germany for further medical treatment. About one hour after the governor was admitted into the intensive care unit of the hospital, President Goodluck Jonathan visited him. The president confirmed then that Suntai’s condition was stable and urged Nigerians to thank God for sparing the governor’s life. From Germany, Suntai was flown to the John Hopkins Hospital in the United States. sourceOdunlade.blogspot.com/2013/08/governor-suntai-returns-homebut-no.html

However the talk of him resuming taking the helm of government in the state is ill advised.
Looking at him alighting from the plane, he still appears dazed. He should be allowed to recover. He will need plenty of rehabilitation and the necessary rest - advice i am sure given by his doctor on discharge.
The affairs of state should remain in the hands of his deputy and other government officials. He should not be rushed into anything that will cause to breakdown or suffer a relapse.
Let the man be. And personally i think he should have arrived back in Nigeria without the cameras flashing in his face - do we have any doctors at all who know how to rehabilitate people who have gone through traumatic events- if we do they should have advised a quiet return! He was involved in an air crash not a car crash.
Please sir look after yourself. Do not be pushed into doing anything for 'party sake!'
Good luck.

I do not know why this mans wife and relatives allowed for him to be made a caricature. It is clear that this man in not in total control of his faculties. The wife of this man should remember that this man did not marry her as a governor. The life of this man is more important than being a governor.I do not know why we like to celebrate impunity in this country. This man should be allowed to recover his health.God knows the reason why he spared the life of this man from the accident. The wife and close relatives of this man should stop the wolves that are using this man to further their selfish interest at the expense of this mans health.I do not know why a woman will agree for others to play around with the life of her husband just for the sake of answering first lady. This should be a lesson for us men,as for me,nobody is praying for bad things, but my wife will swear an oath to me that if she ever finds me in a situation where I am unable to take total control of my faculties, she should never for any reason allow people to take advantage of me like they are doing to this man, like they did to late President Yaradua. What sort of nonsense is all this???,a mans life is now worth less than a political office in Nigeria.
