A 34-year-old man faces imprisonment for allegedly assaulting a police sergeant and trying to strangle him with handcuffs. Three members of the suspect's family were apprehended, too.
The incident took place in Ilupeju area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria. The accused, Emmanuel Ubong, attacked the police officer, Oyewo Olukayode, when the latter tried to
arrest Ubong for an undisclosed offence.
Ubong disarmed Olukayode, took the handcuffs and tried to strangle the policeman with them. Meanwhile, his relatives, who were at the time at home together with the suspect at 12, Adeola Adeleye Street, Ilupeju, Lagos, watched on.
However, their neighbours intervened and rescued the policeman. The victim was rushed to a hospital for medical treatment.
Apart from Ubong, his wife Imeh(29), and two of his relations, Happiness Okon, 27, and Udeni Idorenyin, 31, were arrested. They were charged with conduct likely to cause breach of public peace, while Ubong was charged for attempted murder under the criminal code.
They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs A. A. Ipaye-Nwachuwu granted them bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.
The matter was adjourned till 22 October, 2013, while they were remanded pending when they will fulfill their bail condition.
