Nigeria: 65 Die of Electrocution in 1 Year

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), on yesterday in Lagos, revealed that about 65 people died as a result of electrocution in the country between 2007 and 2008,.Twenty three of these deaths occured in 2007 and 42 in 2008.

The Administrator of NERC,Mallam Imamuddeen Talba, further disclosed that a greater percentage of these deaths occured in the distribution companies of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

Talba,who made the disclosure at the Training-The Trainer Session in Lagos on Health and Safety Standards Manual, organised by NERC,said the death figure is extremely high and unacceptable.

He warned that the commssion would not fold its arms and watch the situation degenerates, adding that the grant from United State Trade and Development Agency (USTDA), for the development of the safety manual, offered NERC the opportunity to intervene in order to check the frequency of safety incidences in the field.

The NERC boss who was represented at the occasion by Engineer Emmanual Ezekwere, said the standards as contained in the manual should be considered a living document that will be modified,expanded upon and contracted to meet the technological changes in the workforce.
