A witness has said that an undergraduate of the Lagos State University (LASU), Michael Egwu, who was on Wednesday, allegedly, shot dead by a police officer at FESTAC in Lagos, died because he would not bribe the police.
The witness, who sought to be anonymous, said Mr. Egwu and his friends were driving a Toyota Sienna bus on 52 Road Junction when a police patrol team stopped them and demanded the vehicle’s documents.
``The police action of demanding that their palms must be greased resulted in an argument that led to Mr. Egwu being shot twice by one of the policemen who later disappeared from the spot,’’ the source said.
The victim was reportedly taken to Ituah Hospital, Festac town, where he was referred to General Hospital, Ikeja, but died on the way there.
Ayodele Adewale, the chairperson of Amuwo Odofin local council, in a reaction to the incident, condemned the killing of the student.
“This senseless killing of innocent and future leaders must stop; I therefore, condemn the killing of Egwu in all ramifications,” Mr. Adewale said.
The police spokesperson in Lagos, Frank Mba, said the cop has been arrested and would be prosecuted for disobeying the rules of engagement.
He also said the police has sent a delegation to commiserate with the deceased’s family.
the police in Nigeria really need to stop all that bribing stuff. When I first visited Nigeria for the first time last year when I was 14 the police scared the living CRAP outta me. I landed in Lagos and was driving all the way to Benin City. Let me tell you I got stopped by the police about.....90 something times over the way (I remember I stoped counting after about 92). I never saw an AK-47 that close before I and I was fearing for my life. It doesnt set a good image for Nigeria. And dont get me started on the traffic, potholes, etc. If not that I like visiting my cousins I would have NEVER went back to Nigeria in m life. Also a lot of my American-born-Nigerian friends agree that the police discouraging them from visiting Nigeria. Which is bad cuz we are suppose to like the motherland and all that.
