About 300 motor mechanics, operating on the platform of Nigeria Auto Technical Association, in Sapele local government area Delta State, on Wednesday held a peaceful protest along some major streets.
The aggrieved Mechanics embarked on the demonstration to show their disdain for what they tagged “dehumanising administrative style of the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Area, Mr. Ejaife Odebala and the Majority Leader of the state House of Assembly, Chief Monday Igbuya, to render us jobless and turn us into miscreants by forcefully and unlawfully sacking us from our workshops.”
Mr. Lugard Eko, Chairman of the group, who led the protesters to the country home of the President General of the Urhobo Progressive Union, UPU, Chief Joseph Omene, to air out their dissatisfaction over harsh decision taken by the council Chairman and the state lawmaker.
“The council Chairman and the Majority Leader have directed one Ifeanyi, who is the immediate past chairman of the association, to lock up our workshops and secretariat for over a month with the intent to acquire the vast land, which is owned by the state government, on which our workshops and secretariat are situated,” Mr Eko said.
The Majority Leader in the State however denied the allegation put forward by the mechanics linking him to a portion of land he acquired.
“The land belongs to Delta Development Property Authority, an agency of the state government. They should find out what their problem is and let me be,” he affirmed.
Also the council chairman denied the claim of planning to acquire the land.
“They (mechanics) have leadership problem. They should resolve it themselves and not link me to it”, he noted.
In the main time, the aggrieved mechanics have vowed that they will not stop the protest, stating that, “until the government officials direct the reopening of our workshops and secretariat, we will not stop.”The placards the Mechanics carried among others read; nobody should sack us from Sapele; Government officials leave us alone; our workshops must be open now.
