The crisis rocking the Anambra State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) further deepened at the weekend with the emergence of the immediate past governor of CBN, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo as its flag bearer in the 2010 governorship election in the state.

According to sources, many power brokers in the state chapter are uncomfortable with the manner the national leadership of the party literally imposed the former university than on the people of Anambra after weeks of intrigues, brickbats and horse trading.

It was learnt that while the elite where fully in support of Soludo’s candidate, the grassroot who are in the majority rallied round a candidate sponsored by an influential business man in the state.

Sources revealed that the candidates who were at the fore front of clinching the PDP ticket where Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu and Bertrand Duru who is said to be an in-law to the business mogul who was once a member of the PDP Board of Trustees (BOT). It was revealed that had proper primaries been carried out, one of the two could have undoubtedly picked the ticket.

A prominent PDP member in Anambra said the national leadership of the party worked hard to soothe frayed nerves, the party may have once again bid goodbye to the coveted seat of the Awka Government House.

He was particularly uncomfortable with the purported influence of the former PDP Board of Trustees (BOT) in the politics that led to the choice of Soludo as the flag bearer.

“How can an outsider come to determine what happens in Anambra State! Where is the democracy that we are all striving to achieve? The last administration sowed a seed of discord in Anambra PDP and the present one has continued where it stopped. Is this how we are going to win the next election in the state? Let God help us.”

But the South-East Vice Chairman of PDP, Olisah Metu said, “it is divine intervention and he cannot say if the arrangement is permanent or not. We put his name (Soludo) to fill the legal requirement and there is still negotiation on going. Things can still change but I am not in the position to say anything now.” He denied that Soludo has always been the party’s choice saying it was mere speculation by politicians.

In his reaction, Gozie Agbakoba member representing Onitsha North & South described it as a good development considering the pegidree of Soludo. He said with Soludo as governor, Anambra will be better saying the former CBN would benefit from his wealth of experience.

One of aspirants, Okey Nwalo accepted Soludo’s choice acknowledging that he remain the best among the people that competed for the position.
