A middle aged man, Seyi Olaiya, is in the police custody for allegedly killing his friend, Usman Yaya, over N50.

The incident took place at Akinimode Street, Mile 12, Ketu on November 30, after a fight between the suspect and the deceased.

Mr. Olaiya who was paraded at the Oduduwa police station on Tuesday said the deceased converted the N50 he gave him to buy sachet water into his personal use.

“I am a security guard on my street and my friends came to visit me in the evening. I bought them water melon and sugarcane and we continued our discussion. While my friends and I were still eating the water melon, I sent Usman to go and get me pure water. I gave him N50 but Usman disappeared with the money. After eating the sugarcane, my hand became very sticky. I then remembered that I had sent Usman to go and get pure water for me to wash my hands,” he said.

Mr. Olaiya added that he searched for Mr. Yaya but he was nowhere to be found.

“After a long while, I saw Usman coming with a wrap of Indian hemp. I asked him about my pure water but he said he had used the money to buy Indian hemp. I told him to give me back my money but he refused,” he said.

He also narratd that in a bid to collect his money, a struggle ensued between them, which resulted in a fight.

Mr. Olaiya continued, “He (Mr. Yaya) started running so as to escape but I chased him. It was in the process of chasing him that he ran into a gutter and sustained a serious wound on his leg.”

‘No, he stabbed him’

According to the statement by the police, Mr. Olaiya stabbed the deceased to death during an argument, but the suspect denied this allegation.

“I did not stab Usman; I did not hit him with a stick or a stone. I only chased him and he fell into a gutter. People know me in my place that I am a very accommodating man. I have accommodated and fed a lot of people including the deceased for close to 10 years. This is just the work of the devil,” he said.

NEXT gathered that the deceased sought medical attention from two different hospitals in the area but was turned down because, according to them, he had lost a lot of blood. He died on his way to the Ikeja General Hospital.

Frank Mba, the spokesperson, Lagos State Police Command, said “The result of the autopsy conducted on the deceased shows that he died as a result of the injury he sustained while fighting with the suspect.”

The police public realtions officer stated that the propensity for violence is high due to the use of illicit drug, which could have contributed to the unfortunate scenario that resulted to the death of the deceased.

“Meanwhile, the police have established a prima facie case about the incident and the law will continue from there,” said Mr. Mba.

What kind of Police investigation and autopsy couldn't give details of the cause of his death? A stab is a stab, an injury on the leg is another thing. Nigeria sha!
