The Edo State Police Command has arrested five persons in connection with the kidnap and murder of Professor Paul Erie, who went missing in June 2015. Late Erie, a professor of Agricultural Economics at the Ambrose Ali University, Ekpom,a Edo State, was reportedly kidnapped on June 16, and was never found until Thursday (Independence Day), when some of the apprehended criminals took the Police to Igbanke village, where a shallow grave in the forest yielded the remains of the professor.
According to a press release by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Stephen Onwochei, there were eight kidnappers, but three are still on the run. The statement gave the names of the arrested hoodlums as Awulu Samson, Lucky Owuadegbe, Jeremiah Amayo, Chucks Edobor and Stephen Usiagwu.
The statement also revealed how the Police had to relocate to Igbanke village after unsuccessfully trying to unravel the case when the crime was initially committed, on the orders of the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Chris O. Ezike.
The team subsequently arrested the five kidnappers finally between 15th and 25th of September, a development which yielded results.
The Edo CP used the medium to convey condolences to the family of the professor, as well as the management of AAU, Ekpoma. He also assured the general public that the police will continue to ensure the safety of citizens in the state.
