Senate President and Chairman of the National Assembly, Dr. Bukola Saraki, yesterday night, led no fewer than 20 members of the upper and lower chambers, to a first official meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and the leaders of both houses of the federal parliament, since assuming office on May 29, 2015.
The rare nocturnal meeting between the principal leaders of the Executive and Legislative arms of government held at the First Lady’s conference room in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
Sources said the meeting was slated to enable President Buhari enlist the support of the NASS leadership for the 2015 supplementary budget, as well as to familiarise with the lawmakers, especially as he will count on the support of upper chamber to confirm the ministerial nominees he sent last Friday.
The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) had arraigned him before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for alleged false asset declaration.
Dogara met Buhari Monday night over the matter following a resolution by the House.
The House had in a resolution passed on Wednesday, last week asked Dogara to intervene in the Senate President’s case by meeting with Buhari and Saraki with a view to finding a political solution to the matter.
The House had argued that a political solution could save the country the heat generated in the polity by Saraki’s trial at the CCT.
It said that a matter affecting the National Assembly could indirectly be a threat to democracy.
Part of the resolution reads, “The House mandates the leadership of the House to meet with the President with a view to politically resolving all outstanding issues relating to National Assembly in the interest of Nigerians.
“Mandates the speaker to intervene in the present issues and challenges being faced by the Chairman of the National Assembly (Saraki) with a view to finding a political solution and protecting the institution of the National Assembly as a whole for the interest of our democracy.”
Present at the meeting were President Muhammadu Buhari; Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari; Senate President, Bukola Saraki; Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara; Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio; House Majority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila among other principal officers of the red and green chambers.
