English giants Manchester United have announced the sacking of Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal, mere days after he led the club to its first trophy since the legendary Sir Alex retired in 2013. United beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday to lift the FA Cup, but Van Gaal was under extreme pressure following a poor season that ended with failure to secure Champions League football and laced with criticism for his negative style of play. The club announced the departure of the Dutchman, who was earning £6.4m annually, early on Monday. The Portuguese maverick Jose Mourinho is set to be named the club’s manager in the coming days. Mourinho was sacked from Chelsea earlier this season, and finally gets to take over the position he has coveted since the retirement of his nemesis Ferguson. United fans have little love for Mourinho, but after their last two coaches, they would take the brash Portugese’s winning mentality over any notions of sentimentality they once held.
