Lagos based lawyer and human rights activist, Festus Keyamo, on Tuesday narrated his ordeal with his wife, Irene Keyamo, before a Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja, while testifying in his divorce suit.
While being led in evidence by his counsel, Gloria Okhajaguan, Mr. Keyamo stated his wife was disrespectful, foul-mouthed and ill-tempered while they were together. He told the court that on several occasions, both at home and at work, his wife caused him embarrassment and even barred him from entering their matrimonial home.
He mentioned a particular instance when she prevented him from entering the house, despite the fact that he got home tired, and very late in the night. “I came, I knocked in frustration, and I left in anger, but my wife did not bother to look for me until after a month when her upkeep allowance had been exhausted,” he said.
He further accused her of violent behaviour, citing an instance when she once deflated the four tyres of his Land Cruiser Toyota Jeep with a knife, after assaulting him in the office. While he testified that they got married May 15, 2004, in Benin City and are blessed with two children, he asked the court to dissolve the marriage.
He, however, conceded custody of the two children to Mrs. Keyamo, pending the time when they will need their father’s attention, for the father-children relationship.
“I would not want her to have custody of the children forever, but at a stage when the children need the firm control of a father then I take custody of the children. In the event that she remarries, I will get my children from her because I do not want them to grow under the tutelage of another man,” he said.
He further noted that he will not default in his responsibility to the children.
Upon conclusion of his evidence-in-chief, the presiding judge, Elfreda Williams-Dawodu, adjourned the matter to April 21, 2010, for further hearing.
Previously, Mr. Keyamo had asked the court to dissolve his six-year-old marriage, asking that custody of the children should be granted to his wife. However, Mrs. Keyamo had in a cross-petition accused her husband of being tight-fisted, a philanderer and irresponsible. She also sought N20 million as alimony.
