The Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chukwuemeka Wogu, has said a recent report by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) that the Igbo language might become extinct in the next 50 years is worrisome and calls for prompt attention.

Mr. Wogu, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan, stated this in an address at the second International Conference on the Extinction of the Igbo language in Owerri, Imo State.

“Until the shocking revelation that Igbo language may go into extinction in the next 50 years, most of us had thought that [the] Igbo language enjoyed a high level of scholarship,” he said.

Mr. Wogu blamed parents for downplaying the language and called on stakeholders to look inwards for solutions.

“I am of the view that neither the school system nor the Diaspora factor is responsible for this problem, for if they were, other major Nigerian languages would be suffering the same fate. That this is not the case tells the Igbo to look inwards for the solution,” he said.

RUBBISH TOTAL RUBBISH!!!

how on earth would they be conducting researches about the IGBOs in a different environment? i believe most of those stupid researches took place maybe in Lagos or even outside Nigeria..  i strongly believe this is a propaganda to find what they would use to tarnish the image of the Igbo nation.

they should go to the Igbo land and see things for their selves...  even the little children everywhere all speaks the language.  u ll hardly hear a different language there even English except on a rare occasions or perhaps in some major towns like Onitsha, Enugu and Owerri.. but then, even in those areas the predominant languages there is Igbo.

Now what would they say about places like Lag, ABJ and PH where the predominant languages re ENGLISH. cos these re the only areas in Nigeria where we have a complete mixture of different races.  why haven't their researches in those areas told them yet that the indigenous languages of people from these areas will go into extinction in the next 50yrs?  hssssssssssssssssssss.

If united nations or whatever they re called have run out of what to do, then they had better go and concentrate their effort in places like Iraq and Agfan where them in conjunction with USA and their allies out of their greed re trying to wipe out the people from those areas from the face of the earth.   they should not even instigate any of those rubbish here in Nigeria.
