He should not give his mother the chance to interfer in  his marriage negatively. All bad things his mother is doing against his wife, she is at same time doing against him.

At same time the bible says, that one should never leave his blood. His mother is also his blood. So he should always leave one eye on his mother and taking care of her, specially in times, when his mother is old and in need.
