Court dissolves marriage following wife's maltreatment of husband

Agency Reporter

I have accepted my destiny but I never knew that my husband would not find place in his heart to forgive me," a subdued housewife, Nimotalai, said shortly after her 15-year-old marriage was dissolved by a Grade "A" Customary Court in Ikorodu, Lagos.

Nimotalai, 39, had stormed the court with eight members of her family to plead with the court to save her marriage, News Agency of Nigeria reported.

Mr. Akin Akinmolasere, 42, had dragged Nimotalai to the court, alleging that she constantly provoked and maltreated him.

"My first wife (Nimotalai) is a full housewife who I loved so much but she does not love me but enjoys my money and quarrels with me for no reason.

"I never intended to marry a second wife but due to Nimotalai's constant maltreatment, she has turned me into an outcast in my own house."

Akinmolasere, a businessman, told the Court President, Mrs. Remi Adesanya, he alleged that his wife locked him out of their matrimonial home which he built and had to live in a hotel.

"I can no longer continue in such shameful humiliation,'' he said.

Akinmolasere said he usually gave his wife N50,000 monthly as a housewife and for the care of their children but she remained unappreciative of his financial support.

"Before I married my second wife early this year, I gave Nimotalai N2m to start a business but she turned down my offer and started maltreating me,'' he said.

He pleaded with the court to grant him the custody of the four children of the marriage aged between three years and 13 years.

Nimotalai, however, pleaded with the court to reconcile them because she wanted both of them to take care of the children together.

The court president, however, turned down her plea and went ahead to dissolve the marriage.

She ordered the two parties to go their separate ways and to maintain the peace.

She referred the custody of the children to the Family Court for proper adjudication.

I hope that the court will grant the man the custody of his kids because that woman is nothing but a bull and can not raise children with this type of attitude.  May God help him.
