Tragedy was averted in Isobendege community in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State as a housewife, Mrs. Clara Ntui, escaped death following an attack on her by her husband’s lover simply identified as Ms. Alice. According to eyewitness account, Mrs. Ntui, 30, and a teacher at one of the government secondary schools at Ikom, nearly met her untimely death when the husband’s girlfriend got wind that she had returned to spend some days with her husband following which she plotted to eliminate her.
The account had it that soon after Mma Teacher, as she is popularly called, arrived the village for her long vacation, she set about tidying up the room. But shortly after her arrival a pregnant young lady in her 20’s, burst into the room where Clara was with her one-year-old baby while the older child had gone out with the father. According to an eyewitness account, when she sought to know the identity of the ‘visitor’ and why she invaded her privacy without knocking at the door, Alice, armed with dangerous weapons, pounced on her, slashing her neck and face with sharp objects.
Caught unawares, Clara could not do anything as she raised alarm which drew attention of neigbhours that rushed to her rescue and later rushed her to a nearby pharmacy store for first aid treatment before moving her to the primary health care centre, Isobedege, where the nurse on duty, Mrs. Eno Orok, gave her medical attention.
Narrating her ordeal to Daily Sun at the health centre at Boki, the victim said, “I can’t understand how it happened; I was carrying my little baby when suddenly a young girl just burst into my room and unleashed attacks on me without knowing what was my offence. Before I could realize it, she had inflicted deep cuts on my face and neck. It was my cries that attracted my neighbours who were my saving grace because I was under the firm grip of my assailant.” Recalling her travails, the mother of two said, “I don’t know the identity of my attacker, but it was after the incident that I was told she is my husband’s girlfriend,” she had never met her before the attack or even had a quarrel with her.”
In an emotion laden tone, she added, “this is not a quarrel or a fight; it is a premeditated act. She already had the intention to inflict pains on me. The attack was too sudden. The blood from the cuts covered my eyes while I was also trying to protect my little child with other hand.” When Daily Sun made enquiries at the Boki Police Station, it was discovered that the matter had not been officially reported to the police for fear of unknown within the community neither had any attempt been made by the woman’s husband to arrest the attacker. It was learnt that nobody has been able to ascertain the whereabouts of the assailant as no one agreed to volunteer information regarding her.
