An electrifying public spat between two of Britain's most prominent footballers' wives is heading for a dramatic courtroom showdown, after Rebekah Vardy sued her former bestie, Coleen Rooney for defamation.
The former filed a libel lawsuit against Rooney as a result of their online scuffle which dates back to 2019 and has now come to a head.
The two women’s relationship started to go downhill after Coleen, the wife of former Manchester United and England striker Wayne, accused Rebekah – who is married to Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy of ‘selling stories’ about her private life to The Sun publication in 2019.
Rebekah Vardy, 38, consistently denied any wrongdoing. She went on to say that she suffered from severe anxiety attacks as a result of the public fallout.
Rebekah Vardy is therefore suing Coleen Rooney for allegedly publishing false statements that were damaging to her reputation.
According to the Sun, Vardy filed a claim for “defamation – libel and slander” to the High Court on 12 June.
Coleen’s did not seem interested in the case whose combined legal fees will total up to to £1m.
She is said to have responded by saying “time and money could be put to better use”.
“It is disappointing that Mrs Vardy has chosen to issue court proceedings. Coleen feels that the time and money involved could be put to better use; her offer to meet face to face still stands. Mrs Vardy’s decision to issue court proceedings does at least mean that Coleen’s evidence can be made public when the time is right,” Coleen’s lawyer, Paul Lunt, of Brabners, said.
