The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended two individuals, Seyi Demola and Wale Lawson, on allegations of defrauding members of the public.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Command's Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrests in a statement shared on his social media handle on Saturday.
According to Hundeyin, officers from the Isokoko Division responded to a distress call, leading to the apprehension of the suspected fraudsters.
"Upon their arrest, the suspects were found in possession of two female handbags, cash, and an iPhone," he stated.
Hundeyin revealed that preliminary investigations suggest that several individuals have fallen victim to the fraudulent activities of the suspects. The police spokesperson affirmed that further inquiries into the case were underway.
In a video accompanying Hundeyin's statement, a woman recounted her close encounter with the suspects' scam. She detailed how one of the suspects, posing as a prophet, approached her for prayers, alongside an accomplice.
"He instructed the man to pray with the water for me and give me his bag to hold," she narrated.
The woman further disclosed that the suspects warned her not to look back, likening her to Lot's wife in the Bible. However, their attempted escape was foiled when concerned citizens intervened, leading to their apprehension.
