FORMER National Secretary Adviser (NSA), General Aliyu Gusau, remains the front runner as the consensus committee set up by the North prepares to pick a presidential aspirant for the zone ahead of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries.

The committee was said to have advised against the candidature of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar because he cannot be divorced from the successes and failures of the Olusegun Obasanjo era.

Sources also stated that the committee ruled out former military president, General Ibrahim Babangida, because of the series of protests against him from different quarters, which it said would easily divide the country.

It said that Babangida had got a lot of questions to answer  from Nigerians, besides the June 12, 1993 election annulment and the $12.4 billion Gulf oil windfall.

The committee was also said to have advised against the choice of the Kwara State governor, Dr Bukola Saraki, because of what it called the controversy over Intercontinental Bank shares, the fact that he was not educated in Nigeria and does not speak Hausa is also seen as a negative factor when he has to be advertised in the North.

Sources confirmed that as a result of the above indications, the camp of General Babangida and Alhaji Abubakar are plotting their graphs on a possible Plan ‘B’, which would see them opt out of the consensus arrangement and go solo.

Those protesting against the choice of Gusau were said to have insisted that the Zamfara-born General had the least political spread among the northern aspirants.

The source said other aspirants saw danger in fielding Gusau, because he had not held any executive position before nor contested election in a demo-cractic dispensation.

Gusau actually came into the political arena in 2007, when he contested the presidential primaries of the PDP.

Northern politicians, especially those in the vanguard of seeking a consensus presidential aspirant, were said to be unhappy with traditional rulers and governors of the zone, who were said to have shown subtle support for President Goodluck Jonathan.

Sources close to the ongoing negotiations said all the four presidential aspirants from the North, including General Baban-gida; former Vice-President Abubakar, Dr Saraki and Gusau, had been brainstorming on the way out for the North.

Sources confirmed that Northern political elders felt emirs and governors of the North had been lukewarm in their support for northern aspiration, so far.

The northern elders were said to have objected to the comments credited to some emirs during President Jonathan’s recent visit to states of the North.

A notable monarch was quoted as commending Jonathan for stabilising the polity and steering the ship of state in a mature manner.

It was learnt the politicians were unhappy that emirs and top monarchs were not queuing up behind the ambition of northern politicians.

As a result of the anger among politicians from the North, it was learnt that the consensus seekers were of the view that monarchs should no longer be involved in the plan to ensure the emergence of a consensus candidate, in view of their lukewarm attitude to the aspiration.
