The Nigeria Immigration Service said on Tuesday that the current Biometric Registration of members of the Economic Community of West African States’ would help in gathering credible data for next year’s general elections in Nigeria.

The Comptroller General of the service, Mrs Chinyere Uzoma gave the hint in Ilorin at the flag-off of the Biometric Registration of ECOWAS Citizens and African Nationals not covered by the Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card.

The biometric system is an automated means of recognising a person by measuring their physical distinguishing traits using biological characteristics such as fingerprints or iris pattern.

The Service noted that the though the e-registration programme was not planned to coincide with the elections, it would be useful in the electoral process if the data generated was made available to the relevant authorities.

Uzoma noted that the exercise would also be beneficial to the government at all levels in the development planning process and in the provision of basic amenities like schools and healthcare facilities.

The programme which was initiated by the Minister of Interior, Capt Emmanuel Ihenacho during the tenure of Mr Chukwurah Udeh, she explained, would also be immense benefit in the improvement of the general security situation of Nigeria in relation to the management of foreign nationals.

She said the exercise was not meant to molest or harass citizens and would not be used in the repatriation of non-Nigerians.

She added that the programme was ‘’an honest attempt by the Service to generate a comprehensive data for purposes of national development.”

Earlier, the state comptroller of the service, Mr B.I Opadiran had listed some of the benefits of the scheme to include the capacity to resolve the issue of mistaken identity in crime detection and provision of demographic information for national planning.
