This goes to show that elements of MEND are hardcore criminals intent on bringing down Jonathan. Who would want a president that cannot deal decisively once and for all with faceless criminals hiding in the creek thinking they can hold the nation hostage? It time to mobilise the military & special forces to cut the head of this snake.

I don't understand what you mean by ''who would want a president that cannot deal decisively.....'' If you read the post carefully you will understand that President Jonathan is trying his best, he brought about the amnesty which the original MEND is committed to. In all associations there are always factions, MEND has illegal factions and they are the one causing all these problems. Militants anywhere in the world are not easy to deal with, it's a gradual thing. Remember that the Niger Delta problem did not start today, that was why former military President Abacha killed Ken Saro Wiwa illegaly and still the problem continued. The main solution to this problem is to have credible and corrupt free forces on ground with matching weapons to counter the insurgents. These criminals are highly equipped and need a higher hardware and technological arsenal to be defeated.

Whilst I did not agree with Abacha's methodology of killing non-violence practioner like Ken Saro Wiwa, it is true that late Yar'dua was a proponent of peaceful resolution in the form of amnesty package. However since the advent of Jonathan, we have had bombs in Abuja and the various threats being made of a conflagration, and now kidnapping. As to the arsenal at the disposal of the criminal elements, their prowess is exaggerated. They are never better equiped than Nigerian forces! An all-out assault will attract international concern, something which Nigeria learned from Abacha's mistake. They are underminding their own son/president and that's why he needs to be more decisive in dealing with the criminal elements therein.

Just as PDP has factions that's the same way MEND has factions, so the illegal factions are committing the atrocities which are to be dealt with. It's not easy you know.

Your comparison is misplaced. We don't hear of criminal factions within PDP intent on killing or kidnapping or illegally armed. If MEND still wants to retain the goodwill of ordinary Nigerians it should purge itself of these hardcore criminals taking shelter under its wing.
If it doesn't, it will be tainted with the same brush.

You are making a mistake, PDP is a political party. That not withstanding, how do you want the original MEND itself to know who the faceless factions are? You are supposed to know that criminals hide when doing things.

President Jonathan is from the Niger Delta that's why the faceless criminals thought they could bully him into any illegal deal. As for the criminals' weapons, are you not aware of the weapons that are usually confiscated by the Nigerian Navy, they are far above what the Nigerian Navy use. These criminals are born and bred in the creeks and can stay and manoeuvre under water far more than anything that the navy can do, that's why they are difficult to capture. The only difference is that the navy is the law and goes with confidence.

What's the point of harming Jonathan's chances when they know that another person in the presidency may seek war path? Weapons that were being confiscated were no way near Nigeria Military arsenal. They are equipped to fight war and ability to invade another country. What is a small area like the Niger Delta to a national armed forces? As pointed out, international out cry if Nigeria were to go with guns blazing is the primary consideration and not this embellishment of a handful of criminals' invincibility. There is no point using a sledgehammer to kill an ant.  Go and read Jane's Military Review on each country's relative might and spending and you will know that a siege or blockage with heavy military presence and overwhelming power will curb their ability to operate. The disadvantage is that innocent people may get caught up in it. They are trying Nigeria's patience!.

My sister you are right. Just because they are being treated with kids' gloves they think they can hold a giant like Nigeria hostage. How Jonathan deals with them will determine his fate in 2011.
