A middle-aged man, suspected to be a drug addict on Monday morning shocked security officials attached to the presidential lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, when he ran into the moving convoy of former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
Obasanjo had returned from a trip aboard a chartered flight about 8.30am and after exchanging pleasantries with aviation correspondents and protocol officials at the lounge, he quickly boarded his BMW Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV).
He was in company with Chief Kenny Martins, former chairman of Police Equipment Fund.
Soon, Obasanjo’s three-vehicle convoy exited the lounge’s gate and as they made their way to the NAHCO-Ikeja Road, the man, who acted like suicide bomber, cornered them.
In split seconds, he had opened the door of the BMW and ‘luckily’ for him, that was exactly where the former president sat.
The man, who wore a pair of shorts and a short sleeve shirt, was said to have tried kicking Obasanjo when the security officials attached to the former president, swooped on him.
He was immediately handed over to the security officials on ground while the former president’s convoy sped off.
As the security officials took hold of him, he attempted to run but on seeing several rifles aimed at him, he laid down, begging to be saved.
As they descended heavily on him, he screamed intermittently: “America is watching o, America is watching o. God of Isaiah come and help me. God of Elijah come and help me. Please leave me alone, I’m begging you.” As he spoke, the angry security men intensified their beating. He slumped twice. Each time he fell, they brought him to his feet and continued the beating. They eventually dragged him to the Air Force base where Daily Sun learnt he would be tested for drugs.
As he was being taken to the Air Force base, the policemen around the lounge wondered how he managed to get close to the former president’s convoy, let alone opening the door of the vehicle conveying Obasanjo to his Ota Farm residence.
Some of them said: “Don’t let him go o. Search him very well. Don’t allow him pass through the presidential aircraft. Before he go take our job, we go don finish am. Stupid man.”
