Police, youths clash in Kaduna

Kaduna—Peace that Kaduna had hitherto enjoyed for some time now was shattered yesterday evening as police reportedly shot and killed an alleged Indian hemp peddler in the metropolis whose identity could not be confirmed as at the time of this report.

The incident which occurred at about 5 pm led to stampede as a section of the youth engaged the police, protesting the killing.

According to eyewitness accounts, trouble started at about 5 pm when men of Operation Yaki, the security outfit of the Kaduna state government raided an alleged hide out of Indian hemp peddlers at Benin Street

In the process of effecting some arrests, the police shot one of them who later died on the way to the hospital.

Traders were forced to close their shops and while those in their various offices fled the area as the youth resorted to smashing of vehicles.

As at 6. 30 pm there still sporadic shootings in the air by security operatives as the metropolis became virtually deserted.

The corpse of the deceased was said to have been deposited at the Baurau Dikko Hospital (Nursing Home).

When contacted on telephone, the Operation Yaki Coordinator, Col. Dickson Mamman (rtd), said he was busy to make elaborate statement on the matter.

He said: “we are very busy right now trying to curtail the situation but it is not from my mouth that you will hear that somebody was killed.
