Pandemonium broke out on Thursday evening in the Kaduna metropolis following the alleged killing of an unidentified person by men of Operation Yaki, the security outfit of the Kaduna State Government.

According to witnesses, the problem started around 6 pm when operatives of the anti-crime outfit raided a notorious hideout of Indian hemp peddlers at Benin Street and in the process of making some arrests, shot and killed one person.

Following the alleged killing of the unidentified person, the peddlers regrouped, and engaged the security operatives in a fight, using various missiles.

Several vehicles were vandalised in the confusion.

Traders in the area hurriedly left the market, while those still in their various offices fled the area. There was chaos on the only bridge accross River Kaduna linking the southern part of the town with the metropolis as anxious residents struggled to flee the area.

The peddlers were joined by other youths around Kano Road, Wushishi Road, Katsina Road and environs, threatening to cause mayhem. The police moved into the areas, shooting sporadically into the air.

The corpse of the deceased was said to have been deposited at the Baurau Dikko Hospital, Kaduna.

When contacted on the telephone, the Operation Yaki Coordinator, Col. Dickson Mamman (retd), said he was too busy to comment on the matter.

He merely said, “We are very busy right now trying to contain the situation but it is not from my mouth that you will hear that somebody was killed.”

The Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Aminu Lawan, could not be reached as his phone was switched off.
