No fewer than three persons last weekend fell victim of stray bullets in Borno State during an exchange of gunshots between Operation Flush operatives, the state special security outfit and some armed men suspected to be of the Boko Haram sect.
Six persons were also injured in the gun battle.
Borno State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Lawal Abdullahi, an assistant superintendent of police who confirmed the incident through a release said, the armed men had attacked the Flush personnel stationed at Kasuwan Shanu junction in Lamisula area of Maiduguri on Saturday at about 7.40 pm.
“A gang of unknown armed men suspected to be religious fundamentalists otherwise known as Boko Haram attacked Operation Flush operatives stationed at Kasuwan Shanu junction Lamisula area of Maiduguri metropolis. There was exchange of fire between the security agents and the said suspected fundamentalists. During the exchange, one Isuzu Tiger pickup van with registration number AE 412 FUR conveying passengers and goods was hit by the gun shots of suspected fundamentalists,” he disclosed.
Lawal said three of the nine passengers in the pick up van hit by stray bullets from the armed men died while six others sustained serious injuries. He also disclosed that the injured victims were rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) while the dead bodies were deposited at the hospital for autopsy, adding that the victims were responding to medical treatment.
He, however, said the Operation Fush did not record any casualty as speculated in the state even as he claimed that two of the armed men were killed but regretted that the gunmen escaped to unknown destination with the corpses of their slain colleagues. The police spokesman said the command was making effort to arrest and prosecute the remaining members of the sect.
“The security operatives are on top of the situation. The area remains peaceful as effective patrol, stop and search are on the increase,” he added.
