UK welcomes UAE court’s decision, awaits Ibori

The British Deputy High Commission in Lagos has said its home government is waiting to receive former governor of Delta State, Chief James Ibori, as soon as necessary paperwork is completed.


This was contained in a statement made by the Communication Manager, Press and Public Affairs Unit of the British High Commission, Mr. Wale Adebajo.


Ibori, who is facing a charge of money laundering, forgery, credit card fraud and theft in the United Kingdom, has been in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, while awaiting a court decision on whether he should be extradited to the UK to face trial.


On Monday, a UAE Court on Cessation in Dubai ruled that he should be extradited to the United Kingdom for trial.


His wife, Nkoyo, had recently been tried in the UK for money laundering and sentenced to five years imprisonment.



Adebajo said, “We welcome the decision of the Dubai court of Cessation to ratify the extradition of Mr. Ibori to the UK. Once we receive confirmation from the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Justice that all legal proceedings have been completed, we will work with Dubai authorities to make arrangements for Mr. Ibori to be transferred to the UK.”
