Investigations by THE PUNCH on Sunday revealed that the new national executive council of the party would emerge during the national convention. It was also learnt that the new leadership would thereafter prepare the timetable.
“The first assignment of the incoming executive is the timetable for our primaries. The timetable will be out this week,” said a chieftain of the party on condition of anonymity. When contacted, the ACN National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the party would meet the deadline for the submission of the list of its candidates for the 2011 elections.
The party had a few weeks ago postponed its national convention from December 16 to December 21, following the death of Mrs. clara Oshiomhole, wife of Edo State Governor, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole.
The ACN had held its ward, local government and state congresses on December 2, 6 and 11 respectively.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the party and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has said the choice of the new leadership of the party will be by affirmation. Speaking with journalists on Friday at Iyamho during the funeral mass for the Edo State governor’s wife, Tinubu said the objective was to elevate democracy through resilience, organisation, party discipline and the culture of politics.
He said, “You have not heard of any sort of crisis since we started our congress. We are moving up, we are not climbing from the top down. The new executive of the party that will emerge will be in accordance with the dictates of our delegates.
“There will be an opportunity for a choice if they (existing national leadership) have opposition. If there is opposition, we will vote; if there is no opposition, it will be affirmed.
“Opposition will cause a division and people will vote. When there is opposition, people will vote, that is how the party is structured; not that you vote for voting sake.”
